Tortoise Hibernation FAQs: When to Start, How Long It Lasts, and When to Call a Vet

Tortoise brumation has no universal start date, duration, or temperature. Species, health, climate, and setup determine the plan, so involve a reptile veterinarian before the wind-down begins.

There is no safe universal date, duration, or temperature for hibernating a tortoise. Whether a tortoise should brumate at all—and how to prepare it—depends on its species, health, body condition, age, local climate, and setup. Plan with a veterinarian experienced in reptiles before autumn behavior changes or you reduce food or heat. During brumation, illness or abnormal activity calls for veterinary advice; after waking, consult a vet if the tortoise still will not eat within a week under appropriate warm, bright conditions.

First decide whether your tortoise should hibernate

Hibernation, commonly called brumation in reptile guidance, is not appropriate for every tortoise. Species identification comes first: some species naturally brumate, while examples such as sulcata and leopard tortoises should not be put through hibernation. Those examples are not a complete species list. Confirm your tortoise’s identification and suitability with a veterinarian experienced in reptiles rather than relying on a general list or assuming that a tortoise should hibernate because it is getting quieter.

Health and body condition matter just as much as species. Veterinary and specialist guidance advises keeping sick or underweight tortoises awake and appropriately warm. Individual restrictions related to age and health vary, so ask the veterinarian to assess your specific animal. Do not treat a planned hibernation as a way to manage unexplained weight loss, illness, or a change in behavior.

Autumn slowing can be seasonal, but it does not establish that an individual tortoise is fit to brumate. A pre-hibernation assessment gives you a chance to clarify suitability and agree on a plan while there is time to make changes. The veterinarian’s examination and any further checks should be chosen for the individual; possible tests mentioned in veterinary guidance include fecal testing, blood tests, or imaging when indicated.

When should you start preparing?

Start planning in late summer or early autumn—before your tortoise begins winding down and well before you reduce food or temperature. There is no universal start date. Seasonal behavior may follow cooling conditions and shorter days in temperate settings, but captive schedules, local climate, species, and husbandry all affect timing. The useful date to set is the veterinary assessment and planning conversation, not a calendar day to begin hibernation.

Before that appointment, note the tortoise’s recent weight and describe its appetite, activity, housing, and any concerning signs. Ask the veterinarian to specify the sequence and timing for feeding, hydration, temperature changes, and the chosen hibernation setup. These details are linked: a wind-down plan cannot be safely copied from another species or another keeper’s climate.

A practical planning sequence is to confirm the species first, then have the tortoise assessed for health and body condition, and then agree on whether and how it will brumate. Once the vet has set the plan, keep a written record of the agreed dates, feeding and hydration instructions, temperature limits, monitoring intervals, and who to contact if something changes. This makes it easier to follow the plan consistently and to report useful details if you need veterinary advice. If the assessment raises a concern, postpone preparation until the vet tells you what to do; do not press ahead because the season is changing.

Why fasting instructions differ

Preparation guidance commonly includes a period without food so the gut can clear, while water access or supervised soaking continues as advised. But sources prescribe different schedules, which is why a fasting interval should come from the tortoise’s veterinarian rather than a generic online rule. Tortoise Trust describes keeping an animal above 13°C for at least three weeks after its last meal. A veterinary practice article describes one to three weeks depending on size and a different preparation sequence. A 2016 Vet Times article gives its author’s recommendation to stop feeding a month before hibernation. These are distinct protocols, not interchangeable versions of one universal instruction.

Do not start a fasting or cooling schedule merely because one of those figures seems convenient. Confirm the plan for the species, individual, and intended setup. If you do not have a clear plan—or the tortoise becomes unwell during preparation—contact the reptile veterinarian before continuing. In particular, do not assume that a fasting period means water should be withheld: follow the specific hydration and soaking advice given for your tortoise.

How long should a tortoise hibernate?

There is no single duration suitable for all tortoises. Species, size, age, health, and location shape the plan, and published guidance differs in both scope and purpose. One veterinary guide summarizes different ranges for small and adult tortoises; a veterinary practice article gives maximum durations by specimen size; and the Vet Times author describes a shorter midwinter schedule used in that author’s practice. The available figures do not establish one definitive duration to apply to every animal.

Ask your veterinarian to set the intended start and end points and explain what observations should prompt an earlier check or change of plan. A maximum duration from a source is not automatically a target, and a schedule used by one practice is not automatically appropriate for another species, climate, or keeper’s setup. The end date should be part of the plan from the outset rather than decided only when the tortoise seems ready to wake.

What temperature is appropriate?

Temperature guidance must be read in context. For Mediterranean tortoises, a Vet Times clinical article gives a refrigerator-hibernation range of 4–7°C and recommends monitoring fluctuations with a thermometer. Tree of Life Exotic Pet Medical Center gives 40–50°F (about 4.4–10°C) as its local ideal ground-temperature guidance for burrow brumation. These recommendations refer to different methods and contexts; they should not be merged into one universal range or applied to a tortoise without a species-specific veterinary plan.

Measure the conditions where the tortoise is actually hibernating, rather than relying on the temperature of the room or outdoor air. A digital minimum/maximum thermometer or soil thermometer can help you observe changes over time. It measures conditions; it does not regulate them or make an unsuitable or unstable setup safe. Agree in advance with your veterinarian on the appropriate range, how to monitor it, and what action to take if readings move outside the agreed limits.

Monitoring is most useful when you know what you are monitoring against. Ask where the thermometer should be placed for your chosen setup, how often to check and record readings, and what variation requires a call or other action. A reading from the room may not represent a burrow or the tortoise’s actual hibernation space. Keep the log with the weight record so that any changes can be discussed with the veterinarian rather than judged in isolation.

Choosing and monitoring a hibernation setup

Outdoor burrows, sheds or garages, and controlled refrigerator setups raise different practical risks. The right questions are whether the method can maintain the species-appropriate temperature, protect the tortoise from frost or overheating, prevent exposure to predators, flooding, or excess moisture, and let you inspect and weigh the animal as your vet directs. Consider also whether you have veterinary support for the method you intend to use. Veterinary sources differ in how they assess these setups, so none should be described as universally safe.

Setup What to assess before choosing it
Outdoor burrow Can the actual burrow conditions be monitored? Assess temperature stability, frost or overheating, predators, flooding, moisture, and whether you can check the tortoise as planned.
Shed or garage Can the space hold the species-appropriate conditions reliably? Assess temperature swings, moisture, access for inspection and weighing, and protection from hazards.
Controlled refrigerator Can you monitor temperature fluctuations where the tortoise is kept and follow the vet’s plan? The Mediterranean range in the Vet Times article is specific to its guidance, not a setting for every species.

Keep a record of the hibernation-space readings and the tortoise’s weight at the intervals your veterinarian specifies. Monitoring supports observation; it does not replace an appropriate setup, veterinary assessment, or a response to concerning changes. When comparing methods, think through not just whether a temperature can be maintained, but whether you can detect a change, inspect the animal, protect it from environmental hazards, and get help promptly if needed.

A September 2026 veterinary-practice guide by Spatz Veterinary reports figures from a Royal Veterinary College study covering 270 tortoises: 7.78% died during brumation, and 7.22% of survivors had health problems afterward. The guide identifies garden hibernation and an uncontrolled temperature drop beforehand as the two main risk factors. These percentages are reported here as Spatz Veterinary’s account of RVC research, not as independently verified findings from the underlying study.

When should you call a vet before hibernation?

Arrange veterinary advice before starting if the tortoise has lost weight or appears unwell. Also raise respiratory signs or discharge, swollen eyes, a wound or shell problem, or the possibility that the tortoise is carrying eggs. These signs need an individual assessment; do not try to decide from a checklist alone whether hibernation is safe. The veterinarian can determine whether examination or tests are appropriate and whether the plan should be postponed or changed.

A pre-hibernation appointment is also the time to settle practical questions that cannot be answered safely with a single general number: suitability, feeding and hydration preparation, the temperature range for the chosen method, the expected duration, and how often to monitor weight and conditions. If any part of the plan is unclear, ask before making husbandry changes.

Bring your weight and temperature notes, along with a description of recent appetite, activity, and housing. Tell the vet about any changes or symptoms even if they seem mild. The workup is individual: an examination may be enough, while fecal testing, blood tests, or imaging may be considered when indicated. The point is not to request every test, but to let the veterinarian decide whether the tortoise is a suitable candidate and whether anything needs attention before a wind-down begins.

When is behavior during hibernation concerning?

Contact a reptile-experienced veterinarian if the tortoise appears ill or behaves abnormally during brumation. One veterinary article specifically advises interrupting hibernation for abnormal movement, urination, or defecation. Treat these as reasons for veterinary attention rather than trying to diagnose or treat a potentially serious problem at home. Follow the veterinarian’s instructions about what to do next.

Keep the relevant records ready when you call: the time you noticed the change, any unusual movement or elimination, recent temperature readings, and the last recorded weight. These observations help describe what happened without substituting for an examination or professional direction. If your setup makes the tortoise difficult to inspect or monitor, discuss that limitation with the veterinarian before choosing the method.

What should happen after waking?

When the planned hibernation ends, provide the warm, bright husbandry and hydration your veterinarian has specified. Watch whether the tortoise resumes normal behavior and begins feeding; do not use a lack of appetite to improvise a different temperature or feeding schedule. Tortoise Trust advises veterinary consultation if the tortoise does not feed by itself within one week under correct conditions. Vet Times likewise recommends an exotic-animal veterinarian if the tortoise behaves strangely or is not eating a week after hibernation. If either problem occurs, contact a reptile-experienced veterinarian.

Before the planned end date, ask the vet what waking and post-hibernation care should look like for your tortoise, including the appropriate warmth, light, hydration, and feeding approach. If it wakes earlier than expected or shows unusual behavior after waking, ask for advice rather than assuming it is simply taking longer to adjust. The one-week point is a reason to consult a vet when feeding has not resumed despite suitable conditions, not a reason to wait through other worrying signs.
