Tortoise Hibernation vs. Brumation: What Owners Need to Know

Hibernation and brumation are overlapping terms, but dormancy is not right for every tortoise. Species, health and temperature control should guide the decision with a reptile vet.

Hibernation and brumation are overlapping terms in tortoise care. The important question is not which word is technically correct, but whether your tortoise’s exact species and individual health make a dormant period appropriate—and whether its preparation, temperatures and waking can be managed safely. Some tortoises should not be hibernated at all. Ask an exotic- or reptile-experienced veterinarian to assess your tortoise and help make a plan before you begin.

Are hibernation and brumation the same thing?

In owner-facing tortoise guidance, the terms are often used with overlap for seasonal dormancy. The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) calls its care sheet Tortoise Hibernation Guidelines, while its reptile service refers to “Hibernation (brumation) problems.” A 2022 veterinary study of captive tortoises uses “brumation” in its title; a 2020 clinical-practice review discusses hibernation in Mediterranean and Horsfield’s tortoises. There is no consistently enforced naming distinction across these sources that owners need to resolve before making a care decision.

Tortoises are ectotherms: environmental temperature has a strong effect on their activity. For an owner, the practical issue is whether the species and individual can safely undergo a controlled dormant period—not whether to label it hibernation or brumation. In this guide, “hibernation/brumation” refers to that seasonal dormant period, and the terms are otherwise used as the cited sources use them.

Should your tortoise hibernate?

Do not decide based on a general species list, the weather outside, or the fact that a tortoise has hibernated before. Species, health, body condition, size and the ability to maintain suitable conditions all matter. Have an exotic- or reptile-experienced veterinarian confirm whether dormancy is appropriate for your individual animal.

Species is the first check

The RVC’s December 2022 factsheet identifies most Mediterranean tortoises, Horsfield’s tortoises and desert tortoises as examples of possible candidates. It says leopard tortoises, African spurred tortoises (sulcatas), red-footed and yellow-footed tortoises, and several North African forms should not be hibernated. These are veterinary guidance examples, not a diagnosis or a complete substitute for identifying your tortoise’s exact species. Desert tortoise care also depends on context; UC Davis’s 2019 veterinary-school guidance focuses on desert tortoises and should not be applied indiscriminately to other species.

Common names can conceal important differences. If paperwork, a breeder’s description or an old care sheet gives only a broad regional label, ask the veterinarian to verify the identification. A tortoise that looks similar to a candidate species may have different seasonal needs. Never use another owner’s successful routine as proof that your animal is suitable.

Health and size can rule it out

The RVC advises that a tortoise should have a veterinary health check before wind-down. Its guidance says an animal that is underweight or unwell should be overwintered awake in indoor accommodation instead. The December 2022 factsheet also says an individual should not have had significant health problems during the previous year and should be of sufficient size. A vet may examine for problems such as nasal discharge, swelling around the eyes or limbs, and changes in the mouth. The factsheet notes that a faecal sample may be screened for a high parasite burden.

The RVC’s December 2024 factsheet states: “Any tortoise which is underweight or suffering from an ailment should not be hibernated, but overwintered in indoor accommodation.” That is a reason to seek an assessment, not a way to diagnose your tortoise from home. If you suspect illness or poor body condition, speak to a vet before attempting any preparation.

A normal appearance on one day is not a guarantee of fitness for dormancy. Tell the clinic about weight changes, injuries, appetite changes, recurring respiratory signs, previous treatment and any earlier difficulty waking. The veterinarian can decide whether examination, weight assessment or faecal testing is appropriate and whether the animal needs an awake winter plan.

How to make the decision with a vet

A pre-hibernation check is not just a last-minute formality. It gives the veterinarian an opportunity to identify concerns, assess whether the animal is suitable for dormancy, and advise on a plan for that tortoise’s species and circumstances. The RVC recommends annual autumn pre-hibernation checks in its December 2022 factsheet.

  1. Confirm the exact species. Bring any reliable identification information you have. Do not treat a broad label such as “Mediterranean tortoise” as sufficient if the exact type is uncertain.
  2. Arrange a veterinary examination before wind-down. Tell the clinic you are considering hibernation/brumation and ask for an appointment early enough to discuss whether it is suitable.
  3. Share relevant health and husbandry history. Explain any illness or injury, changes you have noticed, prior dormant periods, and how the tortoise is currently housed. The vet can decide what assessment is appropriate, including whether faecal parasite screening is warranted.
  4. Ask for a species- and individual-specific plan. Discuss whether the tortoise should hibernate, the temperature guidance for its circumstances, how preparation and monitoring should be handled, and what to do when it wakes.
  5. Do not start if the suitability question is unresolved. If the animal is underweight, ill, or has not been cleared by the vet, ask about overwintering it awake in indoor accommodation instead.

The RVC’s December 2022 guidance describes gradual preparation: feeding is stopped while the tortoise is initially kept warm for digestion, followed by slow temperature reduction, with hydration maintained. Those are elements of that factsheet’s guidance, not universal timings or a complete schedule for every tortoise. Do not lift isolated steps out of context or improvise a wind-down plan; ask your vet how to apply advice to your animal.

Preparation is a sequence, not a single switch. Your written plan should identify when to stop each stage, how temperatures will be checked, what equipment is needed, who will monitor the animal and what constitutes an emergency. A clinic may also advise how to document weight and observations. Do not extend, shorten or restart a dormant period because a calendar date or outdoor weather pattern seems convenient.

Temperature control: why the method matters

A dormant tortoise depends on its environment, so temperature monitoring and control are central to risk management. The RVC factsheet reviewed in December 2024 says temperatures should remain around 5°C during hibernation, regardless of method, and says they should be monitored. An earlier RVC factsheet from December 2022 gives a range of 2–9°C. These are different instructions in dated versions of the guidance; do not merge them into a single universal range. Ask your veterinarian which temperature plan applies to your tortoise.

The RVC’s December 2024 refrigerator method calls for a thermal probe or digital maximum/minimum thermometer. Temperatures can vary by position inside a refrigerator, so a reading from one location may not describe conditions elsewhere. The same factsheet discusses ventilation and humidity considerations. It also warns that below-freezing temperatures can cause blindness or death.

A thermometer helps you monitor conditions; it does not make an unsuitable tortoise or an uncontrolled setup safe. If your vet advises a monitored setup, ask where readings should be taken, how often they should be checked, what variation requires action, and who to contact if equipment or temperatures fail. Use the veterinarian’s plan rather than treating a general figure as permission to proceed.

Can a tortoise hibernate in a refrigerator?

A refrigerator can provide a more controllable environment than an exposed outdoor box, but it is not automatically safe. The RVC’s 2024 guidance specifically describes refrigerator hibernation with a thermal probe or digital maximum/minimum thermometer because temperatures differ within the cabinet. The guide also addresses ventilation and humidity. Your vet should confirm that the appliance, location, monitoring routine and animal are appropriate before use.

Do not rely on the refrigerator’s display alone. Position the probe where your veterinarian directs, check maximum and minimum readings, and have a contingency plan for a power cut, equipment failure or an unexpected temperature change. Never allow freezing conditions: the RVC warns that temperatures below 0°C can cause blindness or death. A refrigerator that is shared, frequently opened or unable to hold a stable temperature may not meet the plan, even if it seems cold enough.

If you buy equipment, the supported choice is a digital maximum/minimum thermometer with a probe. Select a unit whose probe and readout suit your setup, but remember that a product cannot replace veterinary clearance, correct placement or regular observation. No particular make or model is endorsed by the RVC.

Outdoor boxes and uncontrolled cooling

Natural outdoor cooling can fluctuate with weather, sun exposure and frost. In the 2022 UK owner-survey study, garden brumation and uncontrolled temperature reduction before brumation were the main risk factors associated with poor outcomes. That finding does not prove that every garden setup is dangerous, but it does show why relying on ambient weather is not the same as following a controlled plan. If the temperature cannot be measured and managed as agreed with your veterinarian, pause rather than guessing.

What the evidence says about risk

A 2022 study by Vicki Baldrey, Louis Guezennec and Joanna Hedley in Veterinary Record analysed 270 captive Testudo tortoises from 252 completed owner surveys in the UK. It reported a mortality rate of 7.78%; 7.22% of surviving tortoises were reported to have post-brumation health concerns. The study identified garden brumation and uncontrolled temperature reduction before brumation as the main risk factors.

These figures describe that UK owner-survey population. The study was not a randomized trial or a universal risk calculator, and its results should not be treated as estimates for every species, country or husbandry method. They do show why an uncontrolled outdoor dormant period or an unplanned temperature drop should not be assumed safe. The study does not establish that every garden setup causes harm.

The percentages also should not be used to compare a refrigerator with a box, or one species with another, because the survey was not designed as a product or method trial. The useful lesson is narrower: preparation and environmental control matter, and owners should take documented adverse outcomes seriously.

What to monitor when your tortoise wakes

Follow your veterinarian’s waking plan and watch the animal’s behaviour and condition. The RVC’s post-hibernation guidance says to move the hibernation box to a safe, warm indoor space at 20–25°C, with light, and allow gradual warming over several hours. It advises consulting a vet if the tortoise is not active after 24–48 hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RVC guidance identifies eyesight problems, respiratory problems, lethargy, wounds, lack of appetite, and lack of faeces or urine among possible post-hibernation health concerns. It advises booking a veterinary appointment if the tortoise is not eating or passing faeces or urine after seven days. Do not wait for that interval if the tortoise seems seriously unwell or another concerning sign appears.

Urination or defecation during hibernation is abnormal according to the RVC. Its advice is to begin waking the tortoise and arrange a veterinary check. Contact your clinic for guidance rather than simply returning the animal to dormancy or trying to manage a concerning problem on your own.

Keep the clinic’s emergency contact details available before waking begins. Record when the box was moved, when the tortoise became active, and any eating, drinking, urination or defecation your vet asks you to monitor. These notes can help the veterinarian evaluate a problem and prevent assumptions based only on memory.

Hibernation/brumation or overwintering awake?

Question What the guidance supports What to do
Is this species suitable? The RVC’s December 2022 factsheet lists examples of possible candidates and species it says should not be hibernated. Confirm the exact species with an exotic- or reptile-experienced veterinarian.
Is this individual healthy and an appropriate size? The RVC recommends a veterinary check and says underweight or unwell tortoises should not be hibernated. Have the vet assess the animal before preparation; ask about awake indoor overwintering if dormancy is unsuitable.
Can temperature and the setup be controlled? RVC guidance stresses monitoring; its December 2024 refrigerator advice calls for a thermal probe or digital maximum/minimum thermometer. Proceed only with a plan that your veterinarian considers appropriate for the animal and setup.
Is there a plan for waking and warning signs? The RVC gives advice on warming, activity, and when to seek veterinary care after waking. Know your clinic’s contact route and follow its instructions if the tortoise’s condition is concerning.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming every tortoise needs a dormant season. RVC guidance excludes several tropical and North African types, and an individual candidate may still be unsuitable.
  • Skipping the examination because the tortoise hibernated last year. Health and body condition can change; the RVC recommends an annual autumn check.
  • Using outdoor weather as the thermostat. The UK survey linked garden brumation and uncontrolled cooling with risk.
  • Mixing temperature numbers from different guides. The December 2024 RVC factsheet says around 5°C, while its December 2022 factsheet gives 2–9°C. Cite the dated guidance and follow your vet’s plan rather than creating a blended range.
  • Checking only one appliance display. Temperatures vary by refrigerator position, which is why the RVC calls for a probe or digital maximum/minimum thermometer.
  • Waiting through serious signs. The 24–48-hour and seven-day benchmarks are prompts for action, not permission to ignore severe lethargy, breathing problems, wounds or other urgent concerns.
  • Returning a tortoise to dormancy after urination or defecation. RVC guidance treats this as abnormal and advises beginning wake-up and arranging a veterinary check.

Questions to settle before you proceed

  • Has a veterinarian confirmed the exact species and assessed this tortoise for dormancy?
  • Has the vet considered its health history, body condition and size?
  • Do you have an individualized plan for preparation, temperature monitoring and waking?
  • Do you know how to contact a vet promptly if a reading is outside the agreed plan or the tortoise develops concerning signs?
  • Is the monitoring equipment ready, including a probe or digital maximum/minimum thermometer if your plan uses a refrigerator?
  • What is your contingency if the refrigerator loses power, the temperature falls below the agreed level or the tortoise becomes active unexpectedly?

If any answer is no, pause and ask the veterinarian what should happen next. A dormant period is not a requirement for every tortoise; the appropriate decision may be to keep an unsuitable or unwell animal awake in indoor accommodation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is brumation safer than hibernation for a tortoise?

The owner-facing sources use the terms with overlap, so the label does not determine safety. Species, health, body condition, temperature control and a veterinary plan determine whether dormancy is appropriate.

Which tortoises should not hibernate?

The RVC’s December 2022 factsheet says leopard, African spurred (sulcata), red-footed, yellow-footed and several North African tortoises should not be hibernated. It also stresses that species lists are guidance; have an exotic- or reptile-experienced veterinarian confirm the exact species and individual plan.

Can an underweight tortoise hibernate?

No general approval should be assumed. The RVC says an underweight or ill tortoise should not be hibernated and should instead be overwintered awake indoors. Arrange a veterinary assessment rather than trying to correct weight at home and starting dormancy.

How cold should a hibernating tortoise be?

The RVC factsheet reviewed in December 2024 says temperatures should remain around 5°C and be monitored. An earlier December 2022 factsheet gives 2–9°C. These dated instructions should not be blended; your veterinarian should set the temperature plan for your tortoise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a refrigerator suitable for tortoise hibernation?

It may be suitable only when a veterinarian approves the animal and setup. The RVC’s refrigerator method calls for ventilation and humidity considerations plus a thermal probe or digital maximum/minimum thermometer because temperatures vary within the appliance. Freezing temperatures can cause blindness or death.

What should I do if my tortoise is not active after waking?

The RVC advises consulting a vet if it is not active after 24–48 hours. Seek help sooner for severe lethargy, breathing difficulty, wounds, eyesight problems or another alarming sign. If it is not eating or passing faeces or urine after seven days, book a veterinary appointment.

Is urination or defecation during hibernation normal?

RVC guidance says it is abnormal. Begin waking the tortoise and arrange a veterinary check rather than returning it to dormancy or attempting treatment without advice.

Do I need a vet check every year?

The RVC’s December 2022 factsheet recommends annual autumn pre-hibernation checks. A current examination can identify illness, poor body condition or other changes that make a previously suitable tortoise unsuitable this season.

The Bottom Line

Hibernation and brumation are overlapping names, not a safety guarantee. First identify the exact species, then have an exotic- or reptile-experienced veterinarian assess health, size and body condition. If dormancy is approved, use a deliberate preparation and waking plan, maintain the temperature your vet specifies, monitor it with appropriate equipment and act quickly on warning signs. For an underweight, ill or unsuitable tortoise, awake indoor overwintering is the safer course.
