This review covers the original Tractive CAT Mini, not the newer CAT 6 Mini. Tractive’s current product material features both generations, so check the exact model before buying; do not assume specifications or features advertised for CAT 6 Mini apply to CAT Mini. What can the CAT Mini do?
Tractive describes CAT Mini as a GPS tracker supplied with a safety-release collar. Through the app, owners can see location, set virtual fences that can prompt escape alerts, and use location history or territory features. These tools can help you check a cat’s whereabouts; they cannot guarantee uninterrupted updates or prevent a cat from getting lost.
The tracker relies on GPS and an LTE/mobile connection to report its location. Tractive’s description of “unlimited range” is conditional on mobile network availability: coverage in your cat’s actual roaming area matters, particularly in remote places or where supported networks have gaps. The product information does not establish independent real-world accuracy or signal reliability, so the listed capabilities should not be read as a promise that every location will be reported continuously.

Will it fit your cat?
Tractive’s product listing says CAT Mini is for cats above 7 lb, while its Help Center model comparison gives a threshold of 3 kg (6.6 lb) and above. That discrepancy means you should confirm the requirement on the regional listing for the precise CAT Mini generation you are buying rather than treating either figure as universal. The listing says the tracker comes with a safety-release collar; check that the collar fits your individual cat securely and comfortably.
How long does the battery last?
For CAT Mini, Tractive lists a 450 mAh battery and estimates up to five days with Power Saving Zones. Its Help Center estimates two days without Power Saving Zones. These are manufacturer estimates, not independently measured typical results. Tractive says battery life depends on cellular coverage and use of Power Saving Zones, so actual time between charges can vary. Does it require a subscription?
Yes. Tractive’s setup instructions require activating the tracker with a subscription plan. Include that recurring cost alongside the device price when judging affordability; buying the tracker alone does not leave its cellular tracking service working. Tractive displays prepaid plan prices and notes that prices can vary by location, so check the current terms and total at checkout for your region rather than relying on a price quoted elsewhere. - Generation: Confirm the listing is for CAT Mini, not CAT 6 Mini, and compare only specifications for that generation.
- Fit: Check the weight requirement on the exact regional listing and ensure the included collar suits your cat.
- Coverage: Consider the mobile coverage where your cat actually roams; GPS tracking depends on a supported cellular connection to report location.
- Total cost: Add the subscription plan to the device price for the period you expect to use it.
- Charging routine: Plan for charging based on your use and coverage, not only the manufacturer’s best-case estimate.
Verdict: who should consider the CAT Mini?
The CAT Mini may suit cat parents who want app-based location checks, virtual fences and location history, and whose cat meets the relevant fit requirement and roams in areas with suitable cellular service. Its safety-release collar is included, but comfort and release behavior are not independently established here. The practical trade-offs are a required subscription, cellular dependence and regular charging. If those constraints fit your situation, its features may offer useful visibility into a cat’s movements—not a guarantee of safety or recovery.
