Big Cat Rescue shared the clip, but the report does not disclose where it was filmed or identify the camera used. The species is classified as Endangered; one sighting does not show that its population is recovering.
What does the footage show?
According to Indian Defence Review’s report, the clip shows an Andean cat with a kitten and was captured by trail cameras. The Cool Down also reports that Big Cat Rescue shared the video and says two conservation groups had waited three years for a glimpse. That wait is secondary reporting; the published account does not describe the field protocol.
Big Cat Rescue thanked the Pampas Working Group and Quechua Women for Conservation. The Cool Down reproduces the organization’s statement: “Thanks to our partners, the Pampas Working Group and Quechua Women for Conservation, we get a glimpse into their secret lives — and a reminder of why protecting their fragile habitat is so important.”
Where was the Andean cat video filmed?
The capture location has not been disclosed in the reports cited here. The Cool Down says Big Cat Rescue did not identify it, so the clip should not be assigned to a particular country, reserve, or community.

A separate recording can be easy to confuse with this one: WCS Argentina reported that a camera trap filmed an Andean cat with its offspring in August 2024 in the Malargüe area of Mendoza Province. WCS published that account on February 19, 2025. It does not establish where or when Big Cat Rescue’s footage was captured.
Is the Andean cat endangered?
Yes. The IUCN Cat Specialist Group classifies the Andean cat as Endangered. Its account, accessed in 2026, estimates fewer than 2,500 mature individuals and says the classification reflects a small population and inferred ongoing decline. That is a species-wide assessment, not a count made from the featured footage.

The cat occurs mainly in high-Andean areas of Peru and Bolivia, northern Chile, and northwestern Argentina. The IUCN account also notes records beyond the Andes in parts of Argentina and Chile. Its distribution is patchy and low-density, associated with naturally fragmented rocky habitat. Listed concerns include road deaths, retaliatory killing, dog attacks, mining pressures, and fewer sighting reports.
The Andean Cat Alliance describes its goal as conserving the cat and its habitat over the long term in harmony with human communities. Its homepage displays 2,177 adult cats, but gives no year or method for that figure. It should not be treated as a dated census or directly compared with the IUCN estimate.

How do camera traps help conservationists find Andean cats?
Trail cameras, also called camera traps, can record animals passing through an area without a person needing to be present at the moment. That makes them useful for documenting elusive wildlife. WCS Argentina’s separate account also describes an Andean cat-and-offspring video made with a camera trap.
The footage reports do not identify the model, resolution, trigger speed, or other specifications of the device used for Big Cat Rescue’s clip. For anyone considering a trail camera for wildlife monitoring, practical factors include trigger reliability, night illumination, battery life, storage capacity, weather resistance, and connectivity. None of those details is established for the camera in this story.

What can one rare sighting tell us?
The footage documents an Andean cat and kitten, but the available accounts provide no statistic measuring its scientific impact. A single recording does not establish population growth, recovery, or a change in the species’ conservation status. Its value is more direct: it offers a glimpse of an elusive cat and its young while drawing attention to the habitat and conservation work on which the species depends.
