The Car Cube® is a rear-seat dog seat, not a proven crash-protection system. Its maker says to secure your dog with a separate harness attached to the seat-belt fixing, but the product page reviewed does not establish that the Cube itself has been crash-tested. For collision protection, independent veterinary guidance recommends a crash-tested harness, seat belt, or suitable secured travel crate.
What the Car Cube is—and what its specifications tell you
Big Dog Bed Company describes the Car Cube as a waterproof, fleece-lined seat for one rear passenger seat, leaving two rear seats available. It is intended for medium to smaller large dogs; the maker gives Labradors, Vizslas, collies, and cockerpoos as examples. Its listed dimensions are a 52 cm square base, 48 cm sides, and a 62 cm square top. The cover is machine washable, and the product has removable stiffening rods, adjustable straps, quick fasteners, and a drop-down access flap. These are maker specifications, not independent safety findings. Big Dog Bed Company’s Car Cube product page.
The maker presents it as an option for dogs that dislike travelling in the boot, older dogs that are harder to lift, or owners who want to keep boot space free. Those are intended-use claims; they do not establish that the seat prevents anxiety or motion sickness, or protects a dog in a collision.
Does the Car Cube keep a dog safe in a car?
The maker’s product page does not establish that the Car Cube itself has been crash-tested or certified. Its instructions require a harness attached to the seat-belt fixing, but that instruction is not evidence that the complete Cube-and-harness arrangement has demonstrated crash performance. The maker does not include a harness and recommends seeking a crash-tested brand if you need one. Car Cube product page.

Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Riney Canine Health Center states: “The safest way for your dog to travel is in a crash-tested harness, seat belt, or travel crate.” This is general travel guidance, not an evaluation or endorsement of the Car Cube. If a crash-tested option is unavailable, Cornell advises securing a carrier on the floor behind either front seat. Cornell’s car and pet travel guidance.

- Position the Cube: Face the access flap toward the car door. Close it with its fixings while positioning the seat.
- Fit the retaining straps: Place them over the front-passenger and rear-seat headrests, then adjust them so the Cube’s base rests fully on the car seat rather than hanging suspended.
- Prepare the harness connection: Feed the harness-to-seat-belt strap through the corner slot before your dog gets in. The dog must wear a harness connected to the seat-belt fixing; the harness is not supplied with the Cube.
- Load and restrain your dog: Lower the access flap and use the trigger clips to contain your dog while attaching the restraint.
- Close the top: Fasten the top once your dog is secured. Confirm that the harness and all attachments are fitted as their respective makers instruct.
Choosing and using a restraint
Do not assume a harness or tether is crash-tested because it looks sturdy or is sold for car travel. Check the exact model’s independent crash-test status, whether it fits your dog, how it attaches to the vehicle, and whether its instructions can be followed in your car and seating position. Cornell names crash-tested harnesses, seat belts, and travel crates as safer travel options; CDC guidance also describes a dog riding in the back seat in a harness attached to the seat buckle, or a crate secured against sliding. Cornell; CDC Pet Travel Safety.
A crate should be ventilated and large enough for the dog to stand, sit, lie down, and turn around, according to the CDC. If you use the Car Cube, treat its containment and comfort features separately from the crash-protection evidence for a restraint: the seller’s page does not establish the Cube’s crash performance.
