Tresaderm is a prescription topical solution that a veterinarian may use for certain skin conditions and outer-ear infections in cats. Its U.S. label gives general dosing directions, but a cat’s treatment should follow the prescribing veterinarian’s instructions: ear irritation has several possible causes, and the medicine is not suitable for every one of them.

What is Tresaderm for cats?

TRESADERM is a topical veterinary solution containing three active ingredients: thiabendazole, dexamethasone, and neomycin. Each milliliter contains 40 mg of thiabendazole, 1 mg of dexamethasone, and 3.2 mg of neomycin (from neomycin sulfate). The U.S. label describes it as an aid in treating certain bacterial, fungal, and inflammatory skin conditions, as well as otitis externa (inflammation or infection of the outer ear canal) in dogs and cats. It is supplied in 7.5 mL and 15 mL dropper bottles. Read the U.S. product label.

  • Thiabendazole is an antifungal.
  • Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation.
  • Neomycin is an antibiotic.

This combination is not a general-purpose ear cleaner, and it will not address every cause of redness, scratching, odor, or discharge.

What does Tresaderm treat in cats?

The U.S. label covers certain skin disorders and otitis externa, but ear symptoms alone do not identify the cause. In cats, outer-ear problems may begin with parasites, a foreign object, or allergies; bacteria or yeast may contribute, and infection can involve the middle ear. Merck lists head shaking, odor, redness, swelling, scratching, and increased discharge among possible signs of feline otitis externa. Merck Veterinary Manual: ear infections and otitis externa in cats.

A veterinarian may examine the canal with an otoscope and assess an ear-swab sample under a microscope to help determine what is causing the problem. A painful or blocked ear may require sedation or anesthesia for an adequate examination. Treatment is chosen for the underlying cause and examination findings, not just the visible symptoms.

What is the Tresaderm dosage for cats?

The U.S. label says to put 5–15 drops in the ear twice daily, with the amount and frequency depending on the severity and extent of lesions. For skin lesions away from the ear, it says to moisten the affected surface with 2–4 drops per square inch twice daily. The label limits application to no longer than one week. These are label directions, not an individualized prescription; follow the veterinarian’s instructions for your cat, and ask before changing the amount, frequency, or duration. See the label’s directions for use.

  • The label directs removal of waxy, purulent, or foreign material from the ear canal before use.
  • It describes a nozzle that permits partial insertion into the ear canal; do not insert it farther than the veterinarian instructs.
  • Store the solution refrigerated at 36–46°F (2–8°C), as stated on the U.S. label.

Side effects and precautions

The label reports rare neomycin sensitivity in dogs, which may cause redness in the treated area lasting 24–48 hours. It also reports transient discomfort in some dogs when the medicine is applied to fissured or denuded skin, with pain expression lasting 2–5 minutes. These are dog-specific observations on the label; they do not establish how often these reactions occur in cats. If your cat develops a reaction or seems more uncomfortable after treatment, contact the prescribing veterinarian.

Potential effects with extensive or prolonged use

The label says systemic effects from topical corticosteroids are unlikely, but should be considered if use is extensive and prolonged. It lists increased thirst, weakness, lethargy, reduced urination, gastrointestinal disturbance, and rapid heart rate as signs associated with fluid and electrolyte imbalance. If these signs occur, the label directs discontinuing treatment and taking appropriate corrective measures; contact a veterinarian promptly for guidance.

Ear-drum safety

Tresaderm contains neomycin, an aminoglycoside. Merck’s veterinary reference advises checking the eardrum before topical ear treatments because some agents, including aminoglycosides, can be ototoxic when the membrane is not intact. This is general safety guidance, not evidence that Tresaderm is specifically contraindicated in every cat whose eardrum cannot be seen. If the eardrum’s status is unknown, or your cat develops worsening pain, a head tilt, balance problems, or changes in hearing, seek veterinary evaluation. Merck Veterinary Manual: otitis externa in animals.

Avoid contact with the eyes. For ear cleaning or other products, use only what the veterinarian recommends; some cats need an examination before drops can be selected safely.

When should a veterinarian examine your cat?

Arrange an examination for persistent or recurring ear odor, discharge, redness, swelling, scratching, or head shaking. Seek prompt veterinary advice for worsening pain, head tilt, balance problems, or hearing changes. Because different conditions can look alike, using leftover drops or treating an undiagnosed ear problem may delay care for the actual cause.

Prescription status

The U.S. product label states: “Federal (U.S.A.) law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.” Use Tresaderm only when it has been prescribed or directed for your cat by a veterinarian.
