After her adopters sought emergency care and surgeons operated, she continued to struggle and developed aspiration pneumonia. Her veterinary team ultimately concluded that her windpipe was too narrow for her to breathe adequately, and recommended euthanasia as the most humane option. Tulip’s adopters had 12 days with her.
Tulip’s life before adoption
In an account submitted by adopter Kris M. and published by the ASPCA on September 17, 2025, Tulip was born at a USDA-licensed breeding facility in Arkansas. As a puppy, another dog injured her left ear and eye. The account says she was later used for breeding; her puppies died, and she was discarded at age four.

The ASPCA account describes several abnormalities affecting Tulip’s airway: narrow nostrils, an elongated palate, everted saccules near the vocal cords, and an abnormally small windpipe. Together, these made breathing a lifelong struggle. The reported details describe Tulip’s individual condition, not every French Bulldog’s anatomy or prognosis.

Kris and her husband, Tom, adopted Tulip on July 2, 2025. Her breathing was severely difficult. After she began gasping for air, an emergency veterinarian diagnosed severe brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), and surgeons performed airway surgery.

Tulip continued to struggle after the operation. She aspirated material into her lungs and developed pneumonia. Following consultations among her medical team, her adopters were told that her windpipe was too narrow. The team recommended euthanasia as the most humane option, and Kris and Tom said goodbye to her after 12 days together.
What BOAS means—and what Tulip’s case does not establish
BOAS is an obstructive airway condition associated with brachycephalic, or short-headed, anatomy. The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine’s BOAS guidance discusses airway abnormalities, signs that breathing effort is worsening, veterinary evaluation, treatment, and specialist consultation.

Tulip’s story is one severe case involving multiple reported abnormalities and a very narrow windpipe. It should not be read as a prediction that every French Bulldog will have the same defects, treatment course, or outcome. A veterinarian must assess an individual dog’s breathing and health.

Cornell’s guidance on recognizing and responding to canine respiratory distress calls it a serious medical emergency and advises taking a dog showing distress promptly to an emergency animal hospital. For transport, keep the car cool. If the dog cannot stand, Cornell advises laying the dog on its stomach, supporting the chin, and extending the neck. These are general emergency instructions; they are not a treatment plan for Tulip’s specific condition.

Tulip’s adopters hope her experience helps readers understand the welfare consequences of breeding flat-faced dogs. Her account makes a distinction worth keeping in view: BOAS is associated with brachycephalic anatomy, but the specific combination of airway abnormalities and the outcome described here belong to Tulip’s case.
