Urticaria is the veterinary term for hives: raised, red, swollen patches on the skin that are usually itchy. Hives are uncommon in cats, and most episodes are linked to an insect bite or sting, a medication, or another allergen the cat has come into contact with. Many uncomplicated episodes fade within a few hours, but hives can also be the visible sign of a dangerous allergic reaction. If your cat has hives and any difficulty breathing, rapidly spreading or severe swelling of the face, head, neck, or throat, drooling, vomiting, collapse, or weakness, contact an emergency veterinarian immediately.
When to seek emergency veterinary care right away
Treat the following as an emergency, not something to watch at home. The Merck Veterinary Manual describes suspected anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction, as an emergency that requires immediate veterinary assistance.
- Difficulty breathing, including open-mouth breathing, labored or noisy breathing, or blue-tinged gums or tongue.
- Severe or rapidly progressing swelling of the face, head, neck, or throat, or swelling that involves the lips, eyelids, or the inside of the mouth.
- Other signs of a systemic reaction, such as excessive drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, incoordination, collapse, shock, or seizures.
Do not wait to see whether the hives pass when any of these signs are present. Call ahead if you can, so the clinic can prepare, and bring the cat in without delay. If your cat has hives and no breathing or severe swelling problem, arrange a prompt veterinary visit rather than treating the cat at home.
What feline hives look like
Hives appear as small, red, swollen patches or raised bumps called wheals. Usually they are itchy, and the hair over the bumps may stand up. Wheals can appear anywhere on the body. The Merck Veterinary Manual’s cat owner guidance lists the back, flanks, neck, eyelids, and legs as common locations, and notes that in advanced cases the moist linings of the mouth and nose (mucous membranes) may be involved.

Wheals can appear within minutes or hours after exposure. Because the lesions are often transient, owners sometimes describe them as patches that seem to move or change size. Their appearance alone does not confirm the cause. Hives can look similar to other skin conditions, so a veterinarian should examine the cat and take a history.
Possible causes and triggers
Hives are an allergic-type skin reaction, and the cat’s immune system reacts to something it has been exposed to. The Merck Veterinary Manual describes insect bites or stings and medications as the most common associations in cats. Other possible triggers include:

- Medications, including prescribed and some over-the-counter products.
- Vaccines, which the Merck anaphylaxis guidance lists among allergic triggers.
- Chemicals, such as products the cat has contacted or inhaled.
- Something eaten, which can include food or other substances.
- Insect bites or stings, the association most often cited for feline hives.
- Sunlight, which the Merck cat allergy guidance lists among triggers associated with hives or swelling.
- Inhaled or touched allergens, which can also produce hives.
These are possible triggers, not a diagnosis. A single episode often has an identifiable recent exposure, but not always. Keep a record of anything new in the cat’s environment or routine in the days before the hives appeared, including new medications, recent vaccinations, cleaning products, pest-control treatments, and outdoor time.
How hives usually progress
The course depends on the cause and on whether exposure continues. The Merck owner guidance says hives often disappear within a few hours. The general Merck veterinary reference on urticaria in animals says the condition may resolve spontaneously within 12 to 48 hours. These are general descriptions, not a forecast for an individual cat. A cat whose hives have not improved, or that develops new wheals after the first crop fades, needs a veterinary assessment.

- Allergist recommended for allergy control
- Removes allergy-causing pet dander as it cleans
- Mild, gentle formula conditions pet's skin while removing animal odor
- Protects against fleas and ticks
- Non-toxic and non-allergenic formula. Non-ionic surfactants, proprietary natural anti-allergen base, and emollients
Hives can accompany more serious reactions. In those cases, swelling may involve the face or airway, and breathing problems can develop. Not every cat with hives will progress this way, but the possibility is the reason for the emergency guidance above.
Diagnosis and veterinary treatment
There is no single test that confirms hives from their appearance. The veterinarian will usually focus on the timing of the reaction, recent exposures, and whether the cat has other signs. Treatment is chosen for the individual cat.

- Some cases resolve without treatment, particularly when the hives settle quickly and the cat is otherwise well. The Merck cat owner guidance notes that treatment may not be required in these situations.
- Antihistamines are among the medications veterinarians may use. Merck’s cat allergy guidance says veterinarians often treat hives and swelling with antihistamines and select treatment for the individual pet.
- Rapid-acting corticosteroids may be used when treatment is needed, according to the Merck cat owner guidance. Veterinarians weigh the benefits and risks for each cat.
Choice, dose, and duration of any medication should come from your veterinarian for your cat. Do not give a cat any human or over-the-counter medicine, including antihistamines, unless a veterinarian has specifically prescribed it for that cat. Some human products are unsafe for cats, and the correct dose is not something an owner can estimate from a label.

Hives can recur when exposure continues. Identifying and avoiding the trigger can help prevent new episodes, but a trigger is not always found. If hives come back or persist, the Merck owner guidance says food or environmental allergens should be considered. A veterinarian may discuss a structured approach to the diet or the home environment, and will weigh that against the cat’s history and other signs.

Acute episode or recurring problem: how the picture changes
| Situation | What it usually suggests | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| First episode, cat otherwise well, hives fading | Acute reaction, possibly to a recent bite, sting, or new exposure | Contact your veterinarian for advice, record the exposure, and monitor closely |
| Hives with breathing difficulty or severe facial or throat swelling | Possible anaphylaxis | Emergency veterinary care immediately |
| Repeated episodes or hives that persist | Ongoing or recurring trigger, possibly food or environmental | Veterinary workup and trigger history |
What you can do at home before reaching the clinic
- Check breathing and gum color. If breathing is labored or the gums look pale, blue, or dusky, go straight to an emergency clinic.
- Look for swelling around the face, eyes, lips, or throat, and note whether it is increasing.
- Photograph the hives and note their location, since a photo can help the veterinarian assess change over time.
- Write down the time the hives appeared and anything the cat has been exposed to recently.
- Keep the cat calm and limit handling. Do not give any medication unless a veterinarian has told you to.
- Call your veterinarian or an emergency clinic for guidance, and follow their instructions exactly.
Hives in cats are uncommon, and many episodes resolve quickly. What matters most is whether the reaction involves breathing or spreading swelling. Those signs need immediate emergency care. Any other hives should be assessed by a veterinarian so the trigger can be looked at and the right treatment chosen for your cat.
