The familiar “90 years” refers to the gap between its 1843 scientific description and H. H. Finlayson’s 1931 rediscovery. A museum specimen later identified from a 1902–1905 collection shows that the chronology was more complicated—not that the species survives now.
What is the desert rat-kangaroo?
The desert rat-kangaroo, also called the desert bettong, is Caloprymnus campestris, a small marsupial described by John Gould in 1843. Historical records place it in arid parts of South Australia and the eastern Lake Eyre Basin, with records extending into south-west Queensland. Those localities document its former range; they do not establish a present-day population.
Why is it said to have vanished for 90 years?
After Gould described the species, it was absent from scientific records until H. H. Finlayson found it again in 1931. The Australian Museum characterizes the interval as 88 years out of scientific view. That is the precise figure for 1843 to 1931; “nearly 90 years” is a rounded description, not proof that no specimen existed during the interval.
The overlooked specimen that changed the timeline
In 2020, Australian Museum researchers reported that a skin collected at the Lake Killalpaninna mission had been identified as a desert rat-kangaroo. Henry (“Harry”) James Hillier collected it between 1902 and 1905, according to a later reconstruction based on his time there. The specimen itself was not marked with a collection date, so the range is inferred rather than directly recorded. The museum described Killalpaninna as the most southerly confirmed locality then known.

As Australian Museum Research Institute scientist Mark Eldridge put it, “This is another salient lesson in how valuable museum’s collections are in discovering – and rediscovering – species.” The finding extended the known historical record; it did not document a living animal.
Does the desert rat-kangaroo still exist?
No living population is confirmed by the available evidence. The most recent reliable evidence in the sources reviewed is historical museum material, including preserved specimens and locality records. OZCAM provides specimen metadata, but its displayed conservation labels are database fields, not a newly authored official assessment of the species’ current status.

An alleged modern sighting would need to be evaluated on its own evidence: for example, a specimen, clear diagnostic images, or other independently verifiable documentation tied to a date and location. The fact that Finlayson rediscovered the animal after a long gap—and that another old specimen was later recognized—makes rediscovery conceivable, but neither event verifies survival today.
What happened to the species?
The materials do not establish a single proven cause for its disappearance. Historical sources discuss habitat alteration and introduced predators, including feral cats and European red foxes, as possible pressures. These are threat explanations in historical accounts, not conclusive proof that one factor alone caused the species’ loss.

An IUCN Mammal Red Data Book entry from 1982 described the population as unknown and noted the absence of a reliable record by its publication period. It is useful as a historical account of uncertainty and former range, not as a current species assessment. Likewise, the 2013 CITES proposal discusses range and threats but does not resolve whether the animal survives now.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read claims about rediscovery
- Historical verified records: dated specimens and published localities, such as the Hillier skin and Finlayson’s 1931 record.
- Unconfirmed reports: claims that need independent checking against diagnostic evidence, date, and locality.
- Verified modern evidence: none established in the sources reviewed.
The key distinction is between a species being missing from scientific records and being demonstrated extinct. Historical records can be revised when collections are re-examined, but a newly recognized old specimen changes the history of documentation—not the evidence for a current population.
