The bison’s fall into Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park might have been avoidable in the broad sense that staying away from unstable spring edges reduces exposure to thermal hazards. But the available evidence cannot establish exactly how this bison fell or whether a particular intervention would have prevented its death. The best-supported lesson is to stay on designated routes and observe wildlife from a safe distance.
On June 21, 2025, visitors saw a bison enter shallow water, struggle to get out, then enter deeper water and die quickly. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) says the primary danger in most Yellowstone hot springs is near-boiling heat, not acidity.
What the video appears to show
USGS reports that the bison entered a shallow part of Grand Prismatic Spring, appeared alarmed by the hot water, stumbled while trying to get out, entered deeper water, and quickly died. Witness Louise Howard separately told CBS News that the animal first stepped into shallow water and jumped out, then stumbled at the edge and fell in. These are reported observations, not a forensic reconstruction.
Footage circulating online may be cropped or reposted. A clip can show some of the animal’s movements, but it cannot establish precisely why it entered the spring or whether it slipped, broke through a thin crust, or misjudged the edge. USGS scientist Michael Poland told CBS, “What exactly happened in this case, it’s impossible to say.”

Where and when did it happen?
The incident occurred at Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone’s Midway Geyser Basin on the morning of June 21, 2025. Grand Prismatic is a hot spring, not a geyser: the relevant hazard was its hot water and fragile edges.
Why was the spring dangerous?
The USGS reported that the spring’s water was about 89°C (192°F), near the boiling point at Yellowstone’s elevation. Poland told CBS, “What’s dangerous is the fact that they are very close to boiling.” He also noted, “There are thin crusts that form on the edges of these and so it’s difficult to tell if there is boiling water directly beneath you.”

USGS says temperature is the primary danger in most Yellowstone hot springs, not acidity. Most major Yellowstone hot springs and geysers are neutral or alkaline; the claim that all Yellowstone springs are highly acidic is a misconception. The exact sequence of events that killed this bison, however, cannot be determined from the public evidence.
Could the fall have been prevented?
It is possible to reduce general risk by keeping people and wildlife away from fragile thermal edges, but the evidence does not show whether a specific barrier, closure, or other measure would have prevented this individual fall. USGS says wildlife can break through thin crusts near spring edges, and the precise mechanics of this incident are unknown.

That uncertainty matters: a hypothetical prevention measure should not be presented as proof that the park could have stopped this fall. Nor does the available evidence establish that a safe rescue was possible after the bison entered deeper water.
Why was the carcass left in the spring?
Yellowstone officials decided not to remove the carcass because retrieval would have been dangerous and could significantly damage the colorful microbial mats around Grand Prismatic. USGS said damage to those mats could take more than a year to repair naturally.

What Yellowstone visitors should do
National Park Service (NPS) guidance emphasizes staying on boardwalks and designated trails in thermal areas, where apparently solid ground can be a thin crust above super-heated water. Visitors should not touch thermal features or runoff, and swimming or bathing in water entirely of thermal origin is illegal.
- Stay on designated boardwalks and trails in thermal areas, and keep children close.
- Keep at least 25 yards (23 meters) from bison and other wildlife, as directed by the NPS safety guidance. If an animal moves closer, back away.
- Use binoculars or a telephoto lens to observe wildlife rather than approaching it.
- Do not attempt to rescue an animal by entering a thermal area or approaching wildlife. From a safe location, notify a ranger and follow staff instructions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did the bison fall into Grand Prismatic Spring?
The exact mechanics are unknown. USGS says thin crusts near spring edges are a general hazard, and witness accounts describe the bison stumbling as it tried to get out.

Did the bison die from heat or drowning?
The available evidence does not establish a precise forensic cause. USGS identifies temperature as the primary danger in Yellowstone hot springs and says the bison died quickly after entering deeper water.
Was Grand Prismatic Spring acidic enough to dissolve the bison?
That claim is not supported. USGS says temperature, rather than acidity, is the primary danger in most Yellowstone hot springs, and most major springs and geysers are neutral or alkaline.
Could visitors have safely rescued the bison?
The evidence does not establish that a safe rescue was possible. Visitors should stay on designated routes, keep a safe distance from wildlife, and alert a ranger rather than entering a thermal area or approaching a distressed animal.
The Bottom Line
The bison died after entering deeper water at Grand Prismatic Spring on June 21, 2025. Near-boiling water and fragile spring edges are established hazards, but the exact mechanics and preventability of this particular fall remain unknown. Visitors can reduce risk by staying on designated routes and observing bison from at least 25 yards away.
