After a heart attack left Vietnam veteran James Pack hospitalized, First State Animal Center and SPCA cared for his dogs, Bailey and Blaze. When Pack returned, the dogs had entered the adoption process, and he faced a fee he could not afford. He was considering selling his car to raise the money—until shelter staff and volunteers stepped in to help reunite them.
Why Bailey and Blaze were at the shelter
Reporting by iHeartDogs says Pack was hospitalized after a heart attack and that First State Animal Center and SPCA looked after Bailey and Blaze while he was away. By the time he returned to claim them, the dogs had entered the adoption process.
Pack considered selling his car to bring them home
Pack could not afford the fee required to reclaim the dogs and was considering selling his car to raise the money. Good News Network’s 2015 account says he planned to sell it for scrap. The accounts describe a plan, not a completed sale: help arrived before he needed to sell the car.
Staff and volunteers helped make the reunion possible
According to iHeartDogs and the 2015 GoFundMe fundraiser organized by Melissa Eagle, shelter staff contributed toward the fee, while volunteers and supporters helped with supplies. The fundraiser describes donations including food, toys, gift cards, and treats, and says Bailey and Blaze had been separated from Pack for three months.

The fundraiser describes the adoption fee as having been reduced by more than half, but it does not establish a precise final amount. Good News Network reported $210; iHeartDogs later reported $250. Those accounts conflict, and no primary shelter record confirming Pack’s historical fee is available. The shelter’s current adoption-fee page says fees vary and may change, so it cannot resolve what Pack was charged.
