The museum identifies the location as National Chambal Sanctuary in India, but its caption does not confirm the often-repeated claim that there are exactly 100 hatchlings.
What animal is in the viral photo?
The adult is a gharial (Gavialis gangeticus), a crocodilian species. The Natural History Museum identifies the adult as male, noting the bulbous growth at the tip of his snout. Its entry for the photograph names it Head Start, credits photographer Dhritiman Mukherjee, and gives the location as National Chambal Sanctuary, India. Are there really 100 baby gharials?
The image shows a large group, but the museum’s official caption does not give an exact count. The number varies across secondary reports: Live Science reported more than 100, attributing that figure to Mukherjee, while a 2020 Times of India report described roughly 150. Those are attributed retellings, not an exact count confirmed in the museum caption. “100” is best treated as a widely repeated shorthand rather than a verified total. Why are the hatchlings gathered on the adult’s back?
The museum describes the young as month-old offspring and explains that a male gharial may mate with seven or more females. Their hatchlings can gather into one large crèche, or group of young. The caption also notes that gharials of all sexes care for young at various times, so the photograph should not be taken to mean that only males provide care. Natural History Museum: Head Start

Why gharials need protection
The Natural History Museum identifies sand removal from riverbanks used for nesting, damming, and river diversion as threats to gharial habitat. Its Head Start entry gives an estimate of around 650 adult gharials worldwide. That is the figure stated on the museum’s competition page, not a new population census.
