Viva La Kitty may be worth considering if you want a range of wet foods at PetSmart, but judge the individual recipe—not the brand name alone. Some products are complete meals and others are supplemental treats or appetizers; recipes also differ in calories, ingredients and texture. Cats.com rated the line 8.2/10 in a review published February 4, 2026, based on its own assessment of selected recipes, its editorial criteria and customer feedback—not a controlled feeding trial or veterinary endorsement.
What is Viva La Kitty cat food?
Viva La Kitty is a PetSmart-exclusive cat food and treat range sold in PetSmart stores and on its website, according to Cats.com’s review. It includes wet foods in cans, cups and pouches, as well as lickable treats, freeze-dried bites and fish fillets. The wet foods include pâté and shredded textures, with gravy or broth options, and the range includes kitten-specific recipes. PetSmart lists an adult wet food called Shreds in Broth in a 3-ounce format: PetSmart product listing.
Do not assume every product is a complete meal. Check the individual package for its nutritional-adequacy statement and intended life stage. A product described as an appetizer or treat may be supplemental rather than suitable as the cat’s main food.
What did Cats.com’s review find?
Cats.com gave Viva La Kitty 8.2/10, also expressed as 49 out of 60 and an A- grade. The score reflects the publication’s framework covering species appropriateness, ingredient quality, product variety, price, customer experience and recall history. It is Cats.com’s editorial rating, not a veterinary or regulatory certification.
#1 Best Overall
- Stew - A chunky and tender meal with rich gravy.
- Single Protein, Real Poultry, or Fish is #1 Ingredient - Since the dawn of time, cats have loved their protein—so that’s why this dish is packed with delicious, succulent chunks of the good stuff.
- Hydration Boost - Your cat gets to enjoy flavorful, nourishing broth to ensure they’re getting enough H20 (without even knowing it!) every day.
- Grain-Free - Absolutely no corn, wheat, rice, soy, or oats in sight. We don’t pack your pet’s food with grains just to help us save a buck or two.
- Filler-Free - Unlike other brands, we don’t use ingredients like rice or corn to bulk out your pet’s food because we know there’s little nutritional value and it can contribute to obesity and lethargy.
The review author purchased an assortment at full retail price and tried recipes with her cats. She reported that her cats generally preferred pâté and mousse to some broth and gravy foods, and that they refused to sample the Chicken Recipe in Gravy and Duck & Chicken Recipe in Broth. Those observations are anecdotal: another cat may respond differently, and refusal to try a food does not establish its nutritional quality.
Customer responses quoted in the review also varied. One PetSmart reviewer, Lavenderhaze520_8877, wrote about Chicken Recipe in Gravy in May 2025: “The texture and appearance did throw me off a bit but it seems to be made with good ingredients.” That is a personal impression, not an ingredient analysis.

How do the selected recipes compare?
The review gives calorie figures for three specific recipes. These are recipe-level figures reported by Cats.com, not calorie values for the full line.
| Recipe discussed by Cats.com | Reported calories | Ingredient and format notes |
|---|---|---|
| Salmon Recipe Pâté Kitten Wet Food | 34 calories per ounce | Kitten pâté; the review describes animal ingredients. |
| Chicken Recipe in Gravy Adult Wet Cat Food | 17 calories per ounce | Chicken is the lead ingredient; the review notes that it is low in calories relative to the other examples. |
| Duck & Chicken Recipe Shreds in Broth Adult Wet Cat Food | 18 calories per ounce | Shreds in broth with duck and chicken. |
Calories per ounce can help compare foods, but they do not by themselves tell you how much to feed. Use the feeding guidance on the specific package and your veterinarian’s advice when adjusting portions, particularly for a kitten, a cat with a health condition or a cat whose weight needs management.

Ingredients and calorie density vary by recipe. The review also flags added thickeners in some recipes. Read the full ingredient list and nutritional information for the product you are considering rather than applying one recipe’s details to the entire range.
Is Viva La Kitty a good budget-friendly food?
The available evidence does not establish current prices or a consistent price-per-ounce comparison, so it is not possible to confirm that Viva La Kitty is cheaper than other foods. The review author says she paid full retail price, but gives no current price that can be applied across products or retailers.

If value is your priority, compare the exact recipe against alternatives using the package size and current shelf price. Check:
- Whether it is labeled as a complete food for your cat’s life stage or as a supplemental product.
- The named animal ingredients and calorie density of that specific recipe.
- Texture and moisture format, along with your cat’s observed acceptance.
- The price per ounce, calculated from the current price and net weight.
- Whether thickeners or other ingredients matter for your cat’s needs.
The best value is not simply the lowest price per ounce: a food must be appropriate as a meal, suit your cat’s needs and actually be eaten. Introduce any new food gradually if your cat has a sensitive stomach, and contact a veterinarian if you have concerns about diet or a persistent refusal to eat.

What is known about manufacturing and recalls?
Cats.com says the manufacturer and launch date are unclear. The reviewer estimates that Viva La Kitty appeared sometime between 2022 and 2024, but that is not a confirmed launch date. The review also describes PetSmart’s sourcing and manufacturing information as limited. Its references to Thailand for most wet products and the United States for freeze-dried treats are the reviewer’s qualified observations, not independently verified origin claims. Pacific Coast Distributing LLC is identified on packaging as a U.S.-based distributor; the review does not confirm it as the manufacturer.
The review says Viva La Kitty did not appear to have been involved in a recall as of its February 4, 2026 publication, while noting the uncertainty around the brand’s history. That is a time-bounded finding, not confirmation of current recall status or proof that the brand has never had a recall.
Who might consider Viva La Kitty?
It may suit a cat owner who wants to compare several wet-food textures and proteins at PetSmart and is willing to check each label carefully. Cats with specific dietary or medical needs may require veterinary guidance before a new food is introduced. Since palatability varied in the reviewer’s household and customer comments were mixed, a cat’s response to a particular recipe is best assessed individually rather than inferred from the brand’s overall rating.
