Viva Raw recalled selected dog and cat food on August 25, 2025 because of Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recall covers frozen one-pound packages from Lot 21495 and Lot 21975, not every Viva Raw product. Stop feeding the food, save its lot information, contact Viva Raw for a refund, dispose of it securely, and sanitize anything it touched.
The FDA-posted announcement identifies the affected recipes and says the contamination risk was found through routine testing by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture. The notice reported no related illnesses in people, dogs, or cats as of August 25, 2025, a time-limited statement that should not be treated as proof that no later reports exist.

Is Viva Raw dog food recalled?
Some Viva Raw dog food is recalled, but the August 25, 2025 notice is limited to Lots 21495 and 21975. Lot 21495 covers the beef dog and puppy recipes listed above, while Lot 21975 covers the ground chicken and chunked chicken dog foods. The same Lot 21975 recall also includes Viva Chicken for Cats and Viva Pure Chicken.
The FDA-posted company announcement says the potential contamination was identified through routine testing by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture. As of the announcement on August 25, 2025, no illnesses in dogs, cats, or humans related to these lots had been reported. That statement is limited to the information available on the announcement date; it does not establish that no later reports exist.
Where is the lot number on Viva Raw food?
For the recalled Viva Raw products, look for the lot number on top of the clear vacuum package. Compare the number with 21495 or 21975 before feeding or discarding the product.
Keep the original package or photograph it, including the product name, lot number, best-by information, UPC, and net weight. FDA explains that original packaging can help identify the product, manufacturing plant, and production date. As FDA states, The lot number is a crucial piece of information when you’re trying to identify if a product has been recalled or if you’re reporting a potential product problem to FDA or the company.
Read FDA’s guidance on saving a pet-food lot number for the identification and reporting rationale.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (2026), more than 135 million pets live in the United States. That broad figure is one reason precise lot-level identification matters: a recall number identifies a production batch, not every product made by a company.

What should I do with recalled Viva Raw food?
Stop feeding the food immediately, keep it away from people and animals, and contact Viva Raw for a refund using the contact information in the official recall notice. Follow these steps:
- Stop feeding it. Do not give the recalled food to a dog, cat, or any other animal.
- Do not redistribute it. Do not sell, donate, or give the product away.
- Preserve the identification information. Photograph or retain the package and lot number where possible until the refund or complaint process is complete.
- Contact Viva Raw. Use the company contact information in the FDA recall notice to request a refund for remaining product.
- Dispose of the food securely. Place it where children, pets, and wildlife cannot access it. Do not try to make recalled food acceptable by cooking it; the recall instruction is not to feed the product to pets or any other animals.
- Clean contact points. Wash and sanitize bowls, cups, storage containers, utensils, hands, and surfaces that touched the recalled food.
Do not transfer recalled food into a different container before recording the original package and following the recall instructions. A replacement container may be useful for non-recalled food, but it must not erase the lot information needed for identification.
How should I clean a bowl or freezer after a pet-food recall?
Wash your hands and clean and sanitize every item or surface that contacted the recalled raw food. That includes pet bowls, measuring cups, utensils, storage containers, countertops, refrigerator or freezer surfaces, and any floor or other area contaminated by leakage.
CDC’s raw pet food safety guidance recommends washing hands with soap and water before and after handling raw pet food and cleaning items and surfaces that touched it. Disposable nitrile gloves can reduce direct contact while handling a leaking package or contaminated item, but gloves do not replace washing hands with soap and water and do not disinfect a surface. Remove gloves carefully, discard them, and wash your hands afterward.
For future handling of non-recalled raw pet food, CDC recommends keeping the food frozen until needed, thawing it in the refrigerator, keeping it sealed and separate from human food, and throwing away leftovers that have been at room temperature. Those practices do not make the recalled Viva Raw lots acceptable to feed.

Can Salmonella or Listeria from raw dog food infect people?
Yes. Raw pet food can carry Salmonella and Listeria, and contaminated food can expose people through the food itself, packaging, hands, bowls, utensils, or surfaces. CDC explains that raw pet food has not been cooked or heated to a temperature high enough to kill germs and does not recommend feeding raw pet food or treats to dogs and cats.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Pregnant people are especially susceptible to Listeria infection. Young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems may be more vulnerable to serious illness. Symptoms alone cannot diagnose Salmonella or Listeria, so contact a healthcare provider for individualized advice, especially if symptoms are severe or the exposed person is in a higher-risk group.
Households should also consider the vulnerability of puppies, kittens, medically fragile pets, and animals with weakened immune systems when deciding how to handle raw pet food. The CDC guidance on raw pet food provides the broader household-risk context.
What should I do if my dog or cat ate recalled Viva Raw food?
Stop feeding the recalled food, record the product and lot number, and contact your veterinarian if the pet develops symptoms or if you are concerned about the exposure. Do not induce vomiting or give medication unless a veterinarian specifically tells you to do so.
Possible signs in pets include lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain. Some infected pets may carry and shed the organisms without obvious illness, potentially exposing other animals or people. Keep bowls, hands, surfaces, and other items clean, and tell the veterinarian that the pet may have been exposed to recalled food containing Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes.

Contact an emergency veterinarian promptly for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, significant weakness, repeated vomiting, bloody diarrhea, or other signs that the animal needs urgent care. A veterinarian can provide advice based on the animal’s age, health, symptoms, and exposure; this article cannot diagnose infection.
Should I report a suspected illness or product problem?
Yes. FDA accepts pet-food complaints through its Safety Reporting Portal, even when no product or diagnostic testing has been performed. The FDA pet-food complaint guidance says useful information can include:
- exact product name and container type;
- whether the food was refrigerated or frozen;
- lot number, best-by date, UPC, and net weight;
- purchase date and purchase location;
- storage and handling details;
- symptoms and when they began;
- veterinary records; and
- laboratory results, when available.
Preserve photographs, packaging, receipts, and veterinary documentation if possible. FDA says a complaint can contribute to adverse-event and product-problem surveillance even when no product testing or diagnostic testing is available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Are other Viva Raw products included?
The available August 25, 2025 notice specifically identifies Lots 21495 and 21975. Do not broaden that notice to every Viva Raw product, recipe, or lot. Check the product and lot number against the official FDA announcement and consult the FDA animal-food recalls and withdrawals index for later official updates. Do not assume that a product is cleared merely because it is not listed in this particular notice if a newer recall announcement applies.
How should I evaluate replacement pet food?
Choose a replacement based on processing, nutritional adequacy, testing information, storage requirements, and household risk rather than assuming any brand is pathogen-free. The available evidence does not support naming a universally safest replacement product.

| Decision factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Processing | Whether the food is raw or cooked, and whether the manufacturer discloses a pathogen-control or kill-step procedure | Raw food has not been heated sufficiently to kill germs, according to CDC. |
| Nutritional adequacy | Whether the food is complete and balanced for the animal’s species and life stage | A food suitable for an adult dog may not meet the needs of a puppy, kitten, or cat. |
| Testing | Whether the manufacturer discloses final-product testing for Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria | Testing information helps consumers compare manufacturing controls, but it is not a guarantee that a product is pathogen-free. |
| Cold chain | Freezer, refrigerator, thawing, and leftover-handling requirements | Raw food requires careful cold storage and separation from human food. |
| Household risk | Whether young children, older adults, pregnant people, immunocompromised people, puppies, kittens, or medically vulnerable pets live in the home | Higher-risk households may need a different feeding plan. |
| Professional input | Advice from a veterinarian or veterinary nutritionist | Individual health, age, diet, and exposure circumstances affect the appropriate choice. |
Do not claim that a replacement brand is safer or free of pathogens unless a current, product-specific authoritative source supports that claim. For a household with elevated risk, discuss alternatives to raw feeding with a veterinarian or veterinary nutritionist.
