Not definitively. The expedition filmed for Pole to Pole with Will Smith documented an extraordinary northern green anaconda, but the available evidence does not establish an uncontested all-time record. The strongest result is a direct measurement of one female; larger figures remain local reports rather than verified measurements.
What scientists actually found
A team led by University of Queensland professor Bryan Fry spent 10 days searching Ecuador’s Bameno region with Waorani hunters. The expedition took place in Baihuaeri Waorani Territory and was filmed during production of National Geographic’s Pole to Pole with Will Smith.
The best-supported measurement
The team measured one female northern green anaconda at 6.3 metres (about 20.7 feet). The University of Queensland reported that result on 20 February 2024. It is an exceptional size and places the animal among the largest reliably documented anacondas in the cited record.
Why “largest ever” is too strong
The university account does not certify that the snake was the biggest anaconda ever found. Fry also relayed Waorani reports of animals longer than 7.5 metres and weighing around 500 kilograms, but those figures were explicitly anecdotal. They were not presented as measurements taken by the expedition.

Was the snake really found during Will Smith’s show?
Yes, in the sense that the field expedition occurred while Pole to Pole with Will Smith was being filmed. The scientific work was conducted by Fry’s research team in collaboration with Waorani hunters; the television production provided the filming context, not the taxonomic authority. The show’s presence does not turn an anecdotal size report into a verified record.
Where in the Amazon was it found?
The location was the Bameno region of Ecuador’s Baihuaeri Waorani Territory, in the Amazon rainforest. Waorani hunters guided the researchers by canoe through remote habitat and regarded the snakes as sacred. Their local knowledge was essential to locating the animals and interpreting the landscape.

What species is Eunectes akayima?
The expedition helped draw attention to the northern green anaconda, formally recognized as Eunectes akayima in 2024 taxonomic work published in Diversity. It had long been grouped with the southern green anaconda, Eunectes murinus.
A deep genetic split
Genetic analyses reported by the University of Queensland and the Diversity studies found about a 5.5 percent genetic difference between the northern and southern lineages. The researchers estimate that they diverged roughly 10 million years ago, making this more than a geographic variation within a single recently separated population.

What the formal description adds
The species-description paper addresses morphology, nomenclature and the Indigenous naming context. In other words, the story is not only about a very large snake: it also concerns recognition of a distinct lineage with its own evolutionary history and range.
How long were the “20-foot” and “24-foot” snakes?
The common conversions are useful, but they describe different levels of evidence:

- More than 7.5 metres is approximately 24.6 feet, matching the local reports quoted by Fry; it was not measured by the scientific team.
A length in feet does not by itself show that two accounts refer to the same snake. Reliable comparison requires the measurement method, the animal’s identity and a record of who took the measurement.

Extraordinary footage should not be treated as a record without verifiable scale and documentation. The Indian Express fact-check published in 2025 rejected viral “134-foot anaconda” claims and placed verified green-anaconda lengths at roughly 5 to 6.3 metres. That range is consistent with the strongest documented result here and nowhere near 134 feet.

For a credible record claim, look for a named research team, a stated measurement, a traceable location and taxonomic identification. A dramatic frame, an unverified caption or a local estimate cannot substitute for those details.
Why the expedition matters beyond size
The measured animal is important because it combines a remarkable field observation with evidence for a formally distinct species. The work also demonstrates how Indigenous knowledge can guide research in places that are difficult for outside teams to survey. The published account establishes the species distinction and the expedition measurements; it does not, by itself, determine the population size or conservation status of northern green anacondas.
Quick Recap
What can be said with confidence
- The expedition in Ecuador was filmed during Pole to Pole with Will Smith.
- Researchers measured one female northern green anaconda at 6.3 metres.
- The animal belongs to the northern green anaconda, Eunectes akayima, recognized as distinct from Eunectes murinus.
- Reports of snakes exceeding 7.5 metres and weighing about 500 kilograms are anecdotal.
- “Largest ever” is therefore a headline shortcut, not a settled scientific record.
