A wasp spider (Argiope bruennichi) was recorded in Cheshire in September 2026—but it did not just arrive in the UK. Britain’s first recorded wasp spider dates to 1922, and the species is now spreading north. The spider is venomous in the biological sense, but Chester Zoo describes it as harmless to people, and the British Arachnological Society says it is highly unlikely to hurt anyone.
What spider was found in Cheshire?
It was a wasp spider, Argiope bruennichi. Chester Zoo says its estate team found the individual, nicknamed “Wendy,” during a biodiversity survey on the zoo’s 205-hectare estate. A British Arachnological Society expert confirmed it as the first record for Cheshire. That makes it a new county record, not the species’ first appearance in Britain. Chester Zoo’s September 2026 account describes the discovery.
Estate Biodiversity Assistant Rosie Cooper said she had been looking for plants when she spotted the brightly coloured spider: “I was looking out for plant species and then I saw this big, stripy, brightly coloured spider. I have what you might call a healthy respect for spiders, so my first thought was ‘woah!’ But now I think it’s really cool to have found her.”
Has the wasp spider just arrived in the UK?
No. The British Arachnological Society dates the first British record to 1922, at Rye in East Sussex. It describes wasp spiders as widespread along the southern English coast and rapidly spreading north. The Cheshire sighting is evidence of the species being recorded farther north; a single record does not establish how many are present there or when they first reached the area. The Society’s species account sets out its history and distribution.

Is it really Europe’s biggest venomous spider?
The available sources do not establish a European “biggest spider” ranking, so that headline description should not be treated as a verified record. The wasp spider is striking, but its size needs to be described using the right measurement: the Society says females can reach about 2 cm in body length, while males are about 0.5 cm.
The Natural History Museum identifies the cardinal spider (Tegenaria parietina) as the largest spider found in the UK and gives male examples with a leg span of 12 cm. Body length and leg span are different measurements, so those figures are not a like-for-like comparison. The museum’s size and bite guidance is on its spider advice page.

Is a wasp spider venomous or dangerous to people?
Like spiders generally, a wasp spider has venom, but that does not mean it is medically dangerous to people. Chester Zoo calls the species harmless to humans; the British Arachnological Society says it is highly unlikely to hurt people. The Guardian reported an expert comparison of the venom’s likely effects to a nettle sting, but that is an attributed assessment, not a clinical study. The Guardian’s report provides that context.
For UK spiders generally, the Natural History Museum says only two or three species are known to cause significant or unpleasant bites; symptoms are usually local pain and swelling. It advises seeking medical advice if symptoms are more acute. This general guidance is not evidence that wasp spiders commonly bite people.

Why is the species spreading north?
The British Arachnological Society says wasp spiders need at least three months of warm weather and a mild winter to breed, and that these conditions are becoming more frequent with climate shifts. Chester Zoo also interprets the Cheshire record as part of wider northward movement associated with warming conditions. Its Estate Biodiversity Manager Ruby Merriman said: “Wasp spiders are slowly moving north as their southern ranges in Europe warm too quickly for them to adapt.”
That is the zoo’s explanation of a broader range shift, not proof that climate change caused this particular spider to appear at this particular site. The Cheshire record alone cannot identify the cause of an individual’s presence.

How to recognise a wasp spider
Look for the species’ distinctive black, yellow and white wasp-like markings. Females are much larger than males, and females build large orb webs in open, long grass. The British Arachnological Society also describes a vertical band of iridescent silk at the web’s hub. Adults mature in August and September, which is when they may be more noticeable.

- Observe it without handling or disturbing it.
- If you want to document the sighting, take a photograph from a safe distance. A photo can help experts verify an identification.
- You can submit a record to the British Arachnological Society’s Spider Recording Scheme, which accepts public records.
Do not identify a spider from colour alone if you are uncertain. A photograph and location details are more useful for verification than attempting to catch or move it.
