A shark described as a great white circled a family’s fishing boat at Parmelia Bank, east of Carnac Island, on 24 April 2020, according to The West Australian. Fisherman Daniel Palermo estimated it was about four metres long. That was his estimate, not a measured length or an independently confirmed identification.
What happened off Coogee?
The West Australian reported that Palermo filmed the encounter at about 8 a.m. on Friday, 24 April 2020, while fishing with his family. The report places the boat at Parmelia Bank, east of Carnac Island, and its headline describes the location as a few kilometres off Coogee. Palermo said the shark circled for about ten minutes, lingered at the back of the boat, then left. He told the newspaper: “Me and the kids were out there and it circled (the boat) for about 10 minutes,” and, “It hung around at the back of the boat and then just left.” The encounter was reported to authorities. Was it definitely a four-metre great white?
The newspaper described the animal as a great white, and Palermo estimated it was “easily about 4m in length,” roughly the size of his boat. The available account does not establish that an expert confirmed the species or measured the shark. Treat both its identification and size as reported claims, not verified measurements. The account describes circling and leaving; it does not report an attack on the boat.

No. This is a report of an encounter in 2020, not evidence of a current hazard off Coogee. Boating safety for families
Transport WA recommends wearing a lifejacket aboard. Which requirements apply depends on factors including the vessel’s size and type, the waters and distance from shore, and who is aboard. The report does not provide enough detail to determine which legal requirement applied to Palermo’s family. Check Transport WA’s lifejacket guidance for the rules relevant to your vessel and conditions, and choose a properly fitting lifejacket suited to them.
