Do natural mouse repellents work?
Not reliably as household mouse control. NC State Extension says peppermint oil, mothballs, ammonia, and commercial repellents are not reliable for managing or preventing mice. Volatile oils can dissipate quickly and may interfere with baits and traps.
Research is more nuanced than saying plant odors never affect rodents. A 2016 systematic review screened 54 publications and found that essential oils and terpenoids showed effects in some laboratory experiments, but results were inconsistent across laboratory, enclosure, and field studies. That evidence does not establish peppermint oil as a dependable home remedy.

Ultrasonic devices are not a reliable fix either. UC IPM says there is little evidence that ultrasound drives established house mice from buildings. Cats and dogs may catch individual mice, but should not be relied on to control a population.

How to keep mice out and remove those already inside
- Inspect for entry points. House mice can enter through gaps around one quarter inch wide. Check openings around pipes, doors, foundations, vents, and utility lines.
- Seal gaps with rodent-resistant materials. UC IPM calls exclusion the most successful and permanent form of house mouse control. It recommends wire screen or coarse steel wool for small gaps and metal or concrete around structural openings. Steel wool can rust and may be temporary. Plastic, rubber, vinyl, expanding foam, and wood are chewable and should not be relied on alone.
- Remove accessible food and shelter. Clean crumbs and spills, store pantry and pet food in sealed hard-sided containers, keep garbage closed, and reduce debris or vegetation close to buildings where practical.
- Trap where there is evidence of activity. Place snap traps along walls and in dark corners near signs such as droppings or gnawing. UC IPM says trapping works well in many situations and is a preferred option for homes and other structures with only a few house mice. Keep traps inaccessible to children and pets and follow product directions.
- Clean droppings carefully. Do not sweep or vacuum dry droppings. Penn State Extension recommends wetting droppings and urine with disinfectant or an appropriate bleach solution and allowing five minutes of soak time before cleanup. Follow current public-health guidance and the disinfectant label.
- Get professional help if the problem is substantial or persistent. A licensed pest professional can assess entry points and control options when the infestation is difficult to manage.
Why sealing and trapping are better than scent alone
An odor may change where a mouse travels without closing the route into the building or removing mice already inside. Exclusion addresses access, sanitation reduces food and shelter, and traps address active mice. UC IPM summarizes the value of exclusion this way: “Exclusion is the most successful and permanent form of house mouse control.”
