The warning about dogs walking on wet, muddy ground concerns Alabama rot, or cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (CRGV). It is considered very rare, its cause is unknown, and muddy ground has not been shown to cause it. UK Forestry Commission guidance recommends proportionate precautions after woodland walks, particularly from November to May, and contacting a vet if a dog becomes unwell in the hours or days afterward.
What is Alabama rot?
Alabama rot is the common name for cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (CRGV), a condition that damages small blood vessels in the skin and can sometimes affect the kidneys. The Ministry of Defence describes it as very rare but potentially life-threatening. Skin sores may occur; severe kidney dysfunction can progress to kidney failure. According to Ministry of Defence guidance, dogs with skin sores alone are expected to recover, while survival is unlikely when kidney failure develops.
The cause is not known. Official guidance says cases are associated with winter and spring and with dogs walking in muddy woodland areas, but that association does not establish mud as the cause. The Forestry Commission says the prevalence of Alabama rot and Seasonal Canine Illness is unclear, despite extensive research. These conditions are rare; no reliable current prevalence figure is established.
What precautions should you take on a wet or muddy walk?
The Forestry Commission’s advice is precautionary, especially in areas where cases have been reported. It recommends keeping dogs on paths and away from wet or muddy areas, and washing mud off after woodland walks between November and May, paying particular attention to the paws. This advice does not guarantee prevention, and washing has not been shown to prevent CRGV.

- Keep your dog on paths rather than letting them roam through wet or muddy areas.
- After a woodland walk between November and May, wash mud from the dog, especially the paws. A towel can help dry the paws afterward, but it is simply a cleanup aid—not a treatment or preventive measure.
- Follow local notices where cases have been reported and contact a vet if your dog appears ill in the hours or days after a woodland walk.
The Forestry Commission describes these woodland illnesses as very rare and says that where cases have been reported locally, dog walkers should be informed through signage or off-site information (Forestry Commission visitor guidance).
When should you contact a vet?
Contact your vet if your dog seems unwell in the hours or days after a woodland walk. Do not use a skin sore—or its absence—to diagnose or rule out Alabama rot yourself: not every lesion is CRGV, and official woodland guidance advises veterinary contact based on signs of illness rather than owner diagnosis.

Is this the same as leptospirosis?
No. Leptospirosis is a separate bacterial infection caused by Leptospira bacteria, which animal hosts can shed in urine. Dogs may encounter the bacteria in urine-contaminated environments, including water. UK public-health guidance lists vaccination of domestic dogs as a preventive measure and includes it in the UK core vaccination programme (UK government leptospirosis guidance).
For vaccination decisions, the Veterinary Medicines Directorate advises owners and vets to agree on an individual plan based on local disease risk and other risks in the product information. Four-strain vaccines may be considered case by case; a dog’s circumstances, including travel to mainland Europe where additional strains may be relevant, should be discussed with a vet rather than used to choose a product or schedule independently (VMD vaccination advice, 5 March 2026).

The VMD’s December 2025 analysis, published 5 March 2026, reported adverse-event incidence of 0.016% for L2 dog vaccine products and 0.040% for L4 products—fewer than 2 and 4 reported events per 10,000 estimated animals treated, respectively. These are reports, not proof that a vaccine caused every event or an estimate of an individual dog’s risk; reports can involve other products, off-label use, or other contributing factors.

Risk and reported cases can vary by area, so check current local notices and ask your vet about concerns specific to your dog. Do not treat a lack of published local case counts as proof that a disease is absent: the VMD has said it does not hold affected-dog data for leptospirosis, and exact centralised UK counts are unavailable because the disease is generally not statutorily notifiable in animals (VMD FOI response, 12 August 2026).
