Choose a complete-and-balanced food for your dog’s life stage and needs, then weigh moisture, calories, palatability, storage, portioning, and cost. For a puppy, the priority is a growth formula appropriate for large-size dogs—not a particular food texture.
What matters most when choosing Cane Corso food?
Start with nutritional adequacy and life stage. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) explains that “complete” food contains required nutrients and “balanced” food supplies them in appropriate ratios. Find the nutritional adequacy statement on the package and confirm that it covers your dog’s species and life stage. Feeding directions are a starting point, not a guaranteed prescription. The right amount depends on factors such as age, weight, activity, body condition, and the food’s calorie density. Compare the calorie statement and directions on the exact product, then adjust with your veterinary team’s guidance.
Wet vs. dry food: practical differences

These are general food-form tradeoffs, not proof that one type is healthier for every dog. VCA’s comparison discusses the differences in dry, canned, and semi-moist dog food. If dental health is a concern, ask your veterinarian about an appropriate dental-care plan rather than relying on ordinary kibble.

How to choose for a puppy, adult, or dog with medical needs
Cane Corso puppies
Choose food formulated for growth, including growth of large-size dogs where applicable. VCA’s large- and giant-breed guidance notes that these puppies need appropriate nutrient levels, including controlled calcium and phosphorus. Overfeeding can contribute to developmental orthopedic problems even when the food is appropriate. Do not add vitamin or mineral supplements unless your veterinarian recommends them.
VCA describes large/giant dogs as those expected to reach at least 70 lb as adults, and says growth may continue to roughly 18–24 months depending on breed. Its guidance recommends continuing a growth diet until adult weight. These are general large- and giant-breed figures, not results from a Cane Corso-specific feeding trial. Adult Cane Corsos
For a healthy adult, select a complete-and-balanced food for adult maintenance unless your veterinarian recommends a different life-stage formula or a therapeutic diet. Adjust the daily calories to maintain appropriate body condition; the label’s suggested amount may need revision for your dog.
Dogs with medical needs
Higher-moisture food may help increase water intake for some dogs, but a medical condition may call for a specific therapeutic diet rather than a simple switch from kibble to canned food. How much should you feed a Cane Corso?
There is no reliable universal cup amount without knowing the dog’s age, weight, condition, activity, and the food’s calories per serving. Measure the daily ration rather than estimating. VCA recommends a kitchen scale for greater precision than a cup measure, especially for large- and giant-breed dogs.
- Check the calorie content and feeding directions on the exact package.
- Track your dog’s weight and body condition, not just the feeding-chart amount.
- VCA gives a body condition score of 4–5 on a 9-point scale as a target range in its large- and giant-breed guidance; discuss your dog’s score with your veterinary team.
- During puppy growth, monitor condition and growth carefully to avoid overly rapid weight gain.
Can you mix wet and dry food?
Yes, if both foods are appropriate for your dog, but count calories from each. Don’t add wet food on top of the full dry-food ration without adjusting the total. Use the calorie statements for both products and ask your veterinary team for help setting a daily amount if your dog needs a specific calorie target.

Feeding routine and food handling
Use measured meals and sensible timing
VCA identifies gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), often called bloat, as life-threatening and lists feeding practices associated with risk, including eating one meal per day and eating quickly. Its large- and giant-breed guidance recommends multiple smaller meals and limiting intense exercise immediately before or after meals. These practices do not establish that wet or dry food prevents GDV; discuss your dog’s individual risk and routine with your veterinarian.
Keep water available
Provide fresh water. If increasing water intake is a medical goal, ask your veterinarian whether canned food or another approach suits your dog’s condition.

Follow the package’s storage directions
VCA’s food-form article advises storing opened kibble to limit oxidation and buying a package that will be used in roughly four to six weeks. For opened canned food, it advises refrigeration and discarding unused portions after three days, as well as discarding food left in the dish for about 30 minutes. Product directions and current veterinary advice should take precedence if they differ; see VCA’s food storage and handling guidance.
Is wet or dry food proven better for Cane Corsos?
The available sources support general differences between food forms and large- and giant-breed feeding guidance, but do not establish that wet or dry food is superior in a controlled Cane Corso-specific trial. Choose based on nutritional adequacy, life stage, your dog’s preferences and needs, and the practical tradeoffs you can manage. Reassess portions as your dog grows or its condition changes, with veterinary guidance.
