An ASPCA District Captain is a volunteer leader who organizes local advocates and supports the ASPCA’s legislative outreach. The role can often be done from home or in your community, but the ASPCA asks for at least a 12-month commitment and says occasional travel within your state may be requested. “Change laws and save lives” is the program’s invitation—not a promise of a particular legislative result or measured impact.
What does an ASPCA District Captain do?
District Captains help connect advocates in their area and work with the ASPCA Government Relations team. The ASPCA lists activities such as:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Coordinating events and connecting local volunteers.
- Organizing advocacy efforts and engaging with legislators.
- Writing letters to the editor.
- Promoting social media campaigns.
The work is focused on building support for animal-welfare priorities and legislative outreach. The ASPCA program page does not report a number of laws passed, lives saved, or other quantified outcomes.

Can you do the work from home?
Most activities can be done from home or within your community. The ASPCA says travel within your state may occasionally be requested, so consider whether you could accommodate that before applying. The page does not specify how often travel occurs.

What commitment does the ASPCA ask for?
The ASPCA requests a minimum 12-month commitment, explaining that legislation passes incrementally. Applications are processed on a rolling basis, and availability or timing may change. Check the current ASPCA District Captain page for the volunteer description and application.
What if you want to help but not lead?
The ASPCA points people who are uncomfortable with District Captain activities to its Regional Advocacy Field Team (RAFT). It describes RAFT as a national volunteer program in which volunteers work hand-in-hand with a District Captain to engage on ASPCA priority legislation. The program page does not establish a different commitment length or eligibility requirements for RAFT, so check its current description before choosing a path.

What to expect from the role
District Captain is a volunteer advocacy leadership opportunity, not a paid position or a purchase-based program. The ASPCA page includes personal testimonials from captains, but these are individual experiences rather than representative evidence of results. Your day-to-day experience will depend on local advocacy needs and the activities you take on.
