Burmese cats are compact, muscular, short-coated companions known in breed profiles for being playful and people-oriented. They generally need only weekly brushing, but prospective owners should also ask about health testing and remember that published lifespan estimates vary. Here are 12 useful facts, with registry and veterinary sources identified where their descriptions differ.

What Burmese cats look like

1. They are compact, muscular cats

TICA describes the Burmese as medium-sized, compact and strongly muscled; that substantial build can make a cat feel heavier than its appearance suggests. CFA and GCCF likewise describe a muscular body. Breed descriptions are general, not a size target for every individual cat.

2. Their coat is short and close-lying

The Burmese coat is short, glossy or satin-like, and lies close to the body. The texture and build are among the breed’s characteristic features, but coat color descriptions depend on the registry.

3. Color lists vary by registry

CFA lists sable, champagne, platinum and blue. TICA describes solid and tortoiseshell colors that include sable, blue, chocolate, lilac, red and cream. GCCF recognizes ten standard colors, including brown, blue, chocolate, lilac, red, cream and tortoiseshell combinations. These are registry standards, not evidence that one list is universally used.

4. They may take time to reach full size

CFA says Burmese are considered fully grown at 18 months and that a mature male may reach or exceed 12 pounds. GCCF gives different approximate ranges: 11–14 pounds for males and 6–9 pounds for females. These are figures from separate registry profiles, not individual weight recommendations; a veterinarian can advise on a particular cat’s body condition.

Where the modern Burmese breed came from

5. Breed histories trace the Western Burmese to Wong Mau

TICA and GCCF breed histories trace the modern Burmese in the West to Wong Mau, brought to San Francisco in 1930. TICA recounts that Wong Mau was bred with a Seal Point Siamese named Tai Mau and describes the generations that followed. GCCF says it recognized the breed in 1952. These are registry accounts of breed development.

8. Long stretches alone may not suit every Burmese

TICA cautions that Burmese cats may become lonely if left alone for long periods. CFA notes that they can amuse themselves when necessary, so it is too broad to say every Burmese cannot be alone. Consider your schedule and the individual cat’s temperament when planning companionship and enrichment.

How much grooming a Burmese needs

9. Weekly brushing is usually enough for the coat

TICA and CFA describe the coat as low maintenance and recommend weekly brushing with a rubber brush to lift loose or dead hair and help keep the coat glossy. CFA says regular bathing is not needed. Routine nail, ear and dental care are separate parts of general cat care; TICA advises using vet-approved pet toothpaste for tooth brushing.

How long Burmese cats live

10. Published estimates differ

TICA lists a lifespan of 12+ years. PetMD gives an average range of 10–17 years, while GCCF states 16–18 years. These are source-specific estimates, not a guarantee or a single agreed lifespan. An individual cat’s health, care and circumstances matter.

What health questions to ask about

11. Ask about heart screening for HCM

TICA says Burmese cats, like other cats, can be at risk for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a genetic heart disease. Its guidance calls for echocardiographic screening of breeding cats by a veterinary cardiologist and notes that HCM may not appear in the first years of life. Screening guidance does not establish whether a particular cat has or will develop the condition; discuss the cat’s history and appropriate veterinary care with a veterinarian.

12. Ask about genetic testing and interpret other risk claims carefully

PetMD and GCCF discuss hypokalemic polymyopathy, a genetic condition, and genetic testing. GCCF strongly recommends testing breeding Burmese and advises new owners to ask for proof of DNA testing; PetMD also advises asking breeders about parent testing and says testing can identify carriers.

PetMD discusses possible increased diabetes risk and cites an estimate of up to 10% of Burmese cats, but this is a reported estimate, not a definitive prevalence. CFA says evidence for diabetes heritability is not conclusive. PetMD also discusses feline orofacial pain syndrome (FOPS). Ask a breeder about the family’s health and available test records, then ask your veterinarian what signs or follow-up are relevant to your cat.

Questions to take to a breeder or veterinarian

  • What health conditions have appeared in this cat’s family?
  • Is there documentation of DNA testing for hypokalemic polymyopathy in the parents or relevant lines?
  • For breeding cats, has HCM screening by echocardiogram with a veterinary cardiologist been done?
  • What care or follow-up does the veterinarian recommend for this individual cat?
