Do not give your dog a human pain medicine, leftover prescription, or over-the-counter pet pain product unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to. The right treatment depends on the cause of pain and your dog’s health, other medicines, and history. FDA-approved pain medicines for dogs are prescription-only and require veterinary judgment and monitoring.
If your dog may have swallowed medicine or another dangerous item, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly rather than waiting for symptoms.
First, decide whether this is an emergency
Contact an emergency veterinary hospital immediately for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, collapse, uncontrolled bleeding, inability to stand, or a swollen and markedly painful abdomen. Suspected poisoning or accidental medicine ingestion also needs prompt advice, even if your dog seems normal.
In the United States, the FDA lists ASPCA Animal Poison Control at 1-888-426-4435 and Pet Poison Helpline at 1-855-764-7661; fees may apply. Have the product container, strength, estimated amount, and time of exposure ready. Do not induce vomiting or give another medicine unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional tells you to. See the FDA’s guidance on who to call for a pet emergency.

Human pain medicines to avoid
Ibuprofen and naproxen
Do not give your dog ibuprofen, sold as Advil or Motrin, or naproxen, sold as Aleve, unless a veterinarian expressly directs it. Human NSAIDs can last longer in pets, be processed differently, be absorbed faster, or reach higher blood levels. Harmful effects may involve the digestive tract, kidneys, and liver. A dog may initially seem well after swallowing one, so do not wait for symptoms before seeking advice.
Aspirin
Do not give aspirin unless your veterinarian specifically instructs you to. It is not a harmless default alternative to prescription canine NSAIDs and can cause harmful effects. Do not combine it with another NSAID or a steroid such as prednisone unless your veterinarian has specifically addressed the plan.
Acetaminophen, including Tylenol
Acetaminophen is not an NSAID, but it can cause dose-dependent liver and red blood cell damage in dogs. Veterinarians sometimes use it in selected canine cases; owners should not give it without veterinary direction or calculate a dose from a generic chart.

Human pain creams and gels
Do not apply human pain creams or gels to your dog or let your dog lick them from skin, bedding, or a spill. If exposure may have occurred, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly.
Why there is no safe universal dose
A dose cannot safely be chosen from body weight alone. The cause and severity of pain, the exact medicine and formulation, your dog’s health history, and other medicines all matter. A medicine that may be appropriate for one condition or dog may be unsafe for another.

Suppressing pain without finding its cause can also delay care for an injury or illness. Call your veterinarian before giving a medicine, including one prescribed for another dog.
What veterinarians may prescribe
Veterinary pain treatment is selected for the diagnosed condition and individual patient. FDA-approved canine NSAIDs are prescription-only; their uses, routes, duration, restrictions, and risks differ, so the medicines are not interchangeable.

A veterinarian may recommend an examination and baseline or periodic blood tests, especially for longer-term treatment. What to do while arranging veterinary advice
Until you speak with a veterinarian, do not give pain medicine or force your dog to move. Keep your dog as calm as you can and describe the symptoms, when they began, any possible injury or medicine exposure, and all medicines and supplements your dog takes. Follow the veterinarian’s advice about handling and care; the right approach depends on the cause of pain.
How to tell whether your dog may be in pain
Possible signs include limping, stiffness, reluctance to move, unusual vocalizing, restlessness, reduced activity, withdrawal, irritability, reacting when touched, reduced appetite, or changes in normal behavior. A behavior change can matter even if your dog is not crying. Call your veterinarian for new, persistent, worsening, or unexplained signs.
