If you have no kitten formula, first check whether the mother is caring for the kitten. For an orphaned kitten still dependent on milk, get commercial kitten milk replacer as soon as possible; for a kitten beginning to wean, make gruel with kitten food and replacer. A single published homemade mixture is described only as a short-term emergency fallback—not a complete diet for continued feeding. Do not feed a cold or too-weak-to-suckle kitten; warm it and contact a veterinarian or rescue for help.
What can you feed a kitten if you have no kitten formula?
Choose food by the kitten’s age and situation. The three useful options are the mother’s milk when she is present and caring for the litter, commercial kitten milk replacer for an orphan still nursing, and kitten-food gruel for a kitten ready to begin weaning. The homemade mixture below is only a temporary contingency if replacer cannot be obtained promptly.

| Option | When it fits | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Mother’s milk | The mother is present and caring for the litter. | Do not assume kittens are orphaned just because the mother is temporarily away. |
| Commercial kitten milk replacer | An orphaned kitten still depends on milk. | Follow the product directions and veterinary advice; feeding needs vary. |
| Kitten-food gruel with replacer | A kitten is developmentally ready to begin weaning. | Not suitable as the food for a newborn or very young bottle-fed kitten. |
1. Check whether the mother is caring for the kittens
A mother cat may be nearby even when she is not immediately visible. If you find kittens outdoors and they appear clean, plump, and quiet, monitor them from a safe distance when it is safe to do so and allow time for her to return. The ASPCA guidance on kittens found outdoors advises seeking local help if there are concerns or the kittens seem unwell.

2. Use commercial kitten milk replacer for an orphan still nursing
For an orphaned kitten that still relies on milk, commercial kitten milk replacer is the preferred choice. VCA Animal Hospitals states: “Commercial kitten milk replacers are recommended as they are superior to cow’s milk and homemade mixtures.” Use the product’s instructions and ask a veterinarian for guidance on the amount and schedule for this kitten.
As general guidance, VCA describes feeding every 2–4 hours during the first week and every 4–6 hours afterward until weaning. These are not individualized directions; age, condition, and the specific replacer matter. VCA says replacer should remain the kitten’s sole nutrition until about 3–4 weeks, when weaning can begin. See VCA’s guide to feeding orphaned kittens.

Feed carefully and keep equipment clean
- Warm the kitten before feeding; do not feed a cold kitten.
- Warm prepared formula to about 100°F (38°C), taking care not to overheat it.
- Hold the kitten horizontally with its head in a neutral position. Use a nipple that releases only about one drop at a time; a faster flow can lead to aspiration, pneumonia, or death.
- If the kitten is too weak to suckle, contact a veterinarian. VCA advises getting instruction for alternative feeding methods rather than improvising, including tube feeding.
- Clean and boil bottles and nipples between uses. Refrigerate prepared formula and discard it after one hour at room temperature.
Cold formula, fast feeding, and overfeeding can contribute to regurgitation, aspiration, bloating, or diarrhea. VCA also recommends recording an orphaned kitten’s weight daily during its first four weeks; a small digital food scale can help track changes, but it does not replace veterinary care.

3. Offer kitten-food gruel when weaning begins
Gruel is for a kitten transitioning toward solid food, not a substitute for milk replacer in a newborn. Mix high-quality canned or dry kitten food with kitten milk replacer until it has an oatmeal-like consistency. As the kitten eats more food, gradually reduce the replacer in the mixture.

Weaning age is approximate: ASPCA says orphaned kittens can generally begin around three weeks, while VCA says solid food generally begins around 3.5–4.5 weeks. Follow the kitten’s development and veterinary advice rather than treating one age as a deadline. See ASPCA’s cat nutrition guidance and VCA’s guide to raising kittens.

Do not use household cow’s milk as kitten formula. ASPCA warns that cow’s milk can cause stomach upset and diarrhea. Guidance on goat’s milk differs: VCA says pasteurized goat’s milk can be used in an emergency, while Alley Cat Allies advises against it. The safer course is to prioritize commercial kitten milk replacer and ask a veterinarian what to do if none is available promptly.

When should you get veterinary help?
Seek prompt veterinary or rescue support if the kitten is cold, weak, ill, or unable to suckle. Warm a cold kitten before feeding; if you cannot regulate its temperature, get veterinary help rather than trying to feed it. A very young kitten can deteriorate quickly, and its age, warmth, swallowing ability, hydration, and health all affect what is safe.
