If your cat has started wobbling or losing coordination, contact a veterinarian promptly—sudden, unexplained wobbling can be an emergency. The medical term for this loss of coordination is ataxia. It describes a sign, not the cause, so a vet needs to assess your cat rather than you trying to diagnose it at home.
What can cause a cat to wobble?
Balance and coordination depend on several parts of the nervous system, as well as the cat’s general health. A veterinary review groups ataxia into cerebellar, vestibular, and sensory forms; the location of the problem can suggest possibilities, but the gait alone cannot confirm a diagnosis.

These are categories for veterinary assessment, not a checklist for diagnosing your cat. Even signs that appear to point toward an ear or balance problem do not establish its cause. Cornell notes that evaluating suspected vestibular disease involves medical history and physical examination, including neurologic and ear examinations; a veterinarian may recommend additional tests based on the findings. When should you contact a veterinarian?

Make the urgency especially clear when the wobbling is sudden or getting worse, your cat cannot stand or walk, there may have been an injury, a medication exposure is possible, or your cat may have eaten something toxic. What to do while arranging care
- Keep your cat in a calm, secure area and reduce opportunities to fall. Prevent access to stairs, for example.
- Arrange veterinary advice and transport without delay. A secure carrier can help contain a wobbly cat during transport; it is not a treatment.
- Do not give human medicines or start supplements, and do not stop or change a prescribed medication unless a veterinarian advises you to.
- If toxin ingestion is possible, tell the veterinarian what may have been eaten and when, if you know. Contact veterinary or animal poison-control help rather than trying a home remedy.
What will the veterinarian check?
The veterinarian will ask about the onset and progression of the wobbling and any possible injury, medication exposure, or toxin ingestion. The assessment may include physical and neurologic examinations and, when relevant, an ear examination. Further tests depend on what those findings suggest; there is no single fixed test package for every wobbly cat.

Treatment also depends on the underlying cause. Because ataxia is a sign rather than a disease, there is no single home remedy that addresses every cause.
