Dry, cracked dog paws are a sign, not a diagnosis. They can result from environmental irritation or injury, but allergies, infection, abnormal keratin buildup, and underlying disease can also cause them. One suddenly affected paw more often points to a local problem; changes on several paws may suggest allergies, infection, or systemic disease.
Check the pattern and any other symptoms, and contact a veterinarian for severe, persistent, or recurrent cracking. A balm may protect pads from some environmental irritation, but it will not treat every cause.
Common causes of dry, cracked dog paws
1. Cold, dry weather
Cold air and low humidity can dry paw pads, leaving them chapped or fissured. Snow and ice may collect between the toes, causing irritation or painful ice buildup, and exposure to cold can cause frostbite. Repeated contact with cold, wet surfaces can worsen existing cracks.
2. Salt and de-icing chemicals
Rock salt and other de-icers can irritate or chemically burn paw pads, causing redness, cracking, sores, blisters, or bleeding. Dogs may also become ill after licking de-icer from their feet. Common ingredients include sodium chloride, calcium chloride, potassium chloride, and magnesium chloride.

3. Hot pavement or sand
Hot asphalt, concrete, sand, and similar surfaces can burn paw pads. Burns may begin with redness or swelling and progress to blisters, discoloration, exposed tissue, or peeling. Sudden limping or repeated licking after a hot walk may be a sign of a burn.
If your dog may have burned its pads, stop the activity and contact a veterinarian rather than applying household creams.
4. Rough terrain, overuse, or a sudden increase in exercise
Long walks, running, hiking, gravel, and rough ground can abrade pads and cause chafing, cracks, or tears. A sudden increase in activity can injure pads that are not conditioned for it. Check the paws after new activities, especially if your dog is limping or licking its feet.
5. Cuts, punctures, and foreign objects
Glass, thorns, splinters, sharp metal, and grass awns such as foxtails can puncture or tear a pad. A foreign object is especially likely when one paw becomes suddenly painful and your dog intensely licks that foot.

6. Allergies and pododermatitis
Environmental allergies, food-related reactions, flea allergy, and contact or irritant dermatitis can inflame the paws. Itching leads to licking and chewing, which damages skin and may cause cracks, bleeding, and secondary infection. Allergic paw disease often affects multiple feet and may recur.
You may also notice red skin, saliva staining, hair loss, ear problems, or itching elsewhere. “Pododermatitis” describes inflammation of the paw area; it is a clinical problem with many possible causes, not one specific diagnosis.
7. Bacterial or yeast infection
Infection can make paws red, swollen, crusted, painful, or cracked. Other clues include:

- Persistent licking or chewing
- A noticeable odor
- Brown staining around the nails or fur
- Hair loss between the toes
- Pus, discharge, or draining areas
- Small bumps, sores, or swelling
Yeast or bacteria may be the primary problem, but infection can also follow allergies, moisture, trauma, or another disorder. Treatment depends on the organism and underlying trigger, so leftover medication may not solve the problem.
8. Paw-pad hyperkeratosis
Hyperkeratosis is excessive production and buildup of keratin. The pads become unusually thick, hard, rough, or horn-like rather than simply a little dry. Severe cases can develop fissures, secondary infection, pain, or lameness.

Familial footpad hyperkeratosis has been reported particularly in Irish Terriers and Dogues de Bordeaux, although other keratinization disorders can affect other breeds. Thickened pads present from a young age, especially on several feet, warrant a veterinary examination.
9. Parasites
Mites, hookworms, and other parasites can cause paw inflammation and skin lesions. Mange-related disease may produce scaling, crusting, hair loss, itching, or secondary infection. Parasites are more likely when paw changes occur with widespread itching, skin lesions, or hair loss elsewhere.

Autoimmune skin diseases, including pemphigus disorders, can cause pustules, crusting, erosions, painful lesions, and thickened paw pads. The nose, face, nail folds, and other areas may also be affected.
Appearance alone cannot reliably diagnose these conditions. A veterinarian may need skin samples or a biopsy to distinguish them from infection or allergy.
11. Hormonal, metabolic, nutritional, or internal disease
Hypothyroidism, hyperadrenocorticism, zinc-related disorders, and hepatocutaneous syndrome can be associated with thickened, crusted, ulcerated, or hyperkeratotic paw pads. Hepatocutaneous syndrome can severely affect footpads and may also cause lesions on the face, genitals, and limbs.

Canine distemper can cause thickened footpads, sometimes called “hardpad disease.” It may also cause fever, lethargy, eye or nasal discharge, respiratory or digestive illness, and sometimes neurological signs such as twitching, poor coordination, or seizures. It is especially concerning in an unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated dog; seek veterinary evaluation if thickened pads occur with illness elsewhere.
What the pattern of the paws can tell you
| What you notice | Possible causes |
|---|---|
| One paw suddenly becomes painful | Cut, puncture, burn, foreign object, torn nail, insect bite, or localized infection |
| Several paws are red, itchy, or cracked | Allergies, pododermatitis, parasites, infection, abnormal weight-bearing, or systemic disease |
| All pads are thick and horn-like from a young age | Familial or another keratinization disorder |
| Cracked pads plus nose thickening, fever, respiratory or digestive signs, or neurological changes | Distemper or another systemic illness |
| Licking, redness, odor, brown staining, swelling, or discharge | Infection or inflammatory pododermatitis |
What to do at home while you arrange care
- Reduce exposure. Keep walks short and avoid hot pavement, salted sidewalks, ice, gravel, and rough ground until the paws are comfortable.
- Inspect gently. Look at the pads, between the toes, and around each nail for burns, cuts, swelling, stuck debris, or bleeding. Stop if your dog is very painful.
- Rinse after outdoor walks. In winter, rinse or wipe away salt and de-icing chemicals, then dry thoroughly between the toes.
- Prevent licking. Excessive licking can delay healing and introduce bacteria. Ask your veterinarian whether a barrier or protective device is appropriate.
- Avoid unapproved products. Human creams, essential oils, disinfectants, and pain medications can irritate the pads or be dangerous if swallowed. A dog-safe protectant may help with exposure-related irritation, but it will not treat infection, allergy, burns, foreign bodies, or internal disease.
When cracked paws need veterinary care
Arrange prompt veterinary care for bleeding, deep cracks or lacerations, suspected burns, exposed tissue, marked swelling, pus or foul odor, severe pain, lameness, persistent licking, or a deeply embedded foreign object. Make an appointment if several paws are affected or cracking keeps returning. Seek urgent care if paw changes occur with symptoms affecting the whole dog, such as fever, pronounced lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, breathing problems, eye or nose discharge, seizures, or other neurological signs.
Depending on the pattern and suspected cause, diagnosis may involve a paw examination, cytology, skin scrapings, cultures, blood tests, imaging, allergy trials, or biopsy. Treatment depends on the cause.
FAQ
Are cracked dog paws always caused by dehydration?
No. Cracking is not specific to dehydration. Environmental exposure, burns, trauma, allergies, infection, hyperkeratosis, and systemic disease can all cause similar changes. Persistent or severe cracking needs a veterinary examination.

Can I put coconut oil or human moisturizer on my dog’s paws?
Do not use an unapproved human product without veterinary advice. Dogs lick their paws, and some ingredients can irritate skin or cause illness when swallowed. A veterinarian can recommend an appropriate protectant if environmental irritation is the problem.
Why does my dog have cracked pads on only one foot?
One affected paw more often suggests a local problem such as a cut, burn, puncture, torn nail, insect bite, foreign object, or localized infection. Sudden limping or intense licking warrants a careful inspection and veterinary advice if the cause is not obvious.
How quickly should I see a veterinarian for cracked paw pads?
Arrange prompt care for bleeding, deep cracks, burns, exposed tissue, swelling, pus, foul odor, severe pain, lameness, persistent licking, or a deeply embedded object. Seek urgent care for whole-body symptoms, and make an appointment for recurrent cracking or multiple affected paws.
The Bottom Line
Dry, cracked dog paws are a symptom rather than a diagnosis. Weather or rough terrain may irritate pads, while burns, chemical injuries, infection, allergies, foreign bodies, hyperkeratosis, and internal disease need different treatment. The number of paws affected and other signs can help guide the next step. When in doubt, have your dog’s paws checked instead of assuming a balm will fix them.
