Alaskan Klee Kai normally shed large amounts of undercoat during seasonal “coat blows.” That is different from true hair loss: thinning, bald patches, itching, inflamed skin, pain, rapid progression or changes in general health should be assessed by a veterinarian.

Why Alaskan Klee Kai can appear to shed so much

An Alaskan Klee Kai has a double coat: a short, dense undercoat beneath longer outer guard hairs. The undercoat provides insulation, while the guard hairs help protect the skin and repel environmental moisture and debris. When the undercoat is released, loose fur can come out in handfuls and collect on floors, furniture and clothing.

The American Kennel Club breed profile describes the undercoat being shed, or “blown,” twice a year. The official breed standard explicitly recognizes this temporary change: “The absence of an undercoat should not be penalized during shedding season.” A Klee Kai may therefore look less plush for a period without being sick or permanently losing its coat.

What a normal seasonal coat release looks like

  • Loose hair is distributed broadly over the body rather than confined to sharply defined patches.
  • Undercoat comes out heavily during a seasonal blow, but the outer guard hairs remain present.
  • The skin is not persistently red, crusted, moist, swollen or painful.
  • Your dog is not intensely itchy or repeatedly chewing and scratching the same areas.
  • Eating, drinking, energy, weight and behavior remain normal.

Shedding volume by itself is not a diagnosis. A heavy brush full of fur can be normal for this breed, while a smaller amount of hair loss can be medically important if it leaves visible bare skin or occurs with discomfort.

Seasonal shedding versus abnormal hair loss

Use the pattern and the condition of the skin—not the size of the hair pile—as the main distinction.

Feature Seasonal undercoat release Potentially abnormal hair loss
Distribution Generally widespread and even across the coat Visible thinning, sharply outlined areas or bald patches
Skin appearance Looks normal for the dog Redness, scaling, crusts, sores, discharge, swelling or other lesions
Comfort No persistent itch, pain or repeated licking Intense itching, chewing, rubbing, pain or other discomfort
Progression Follows a seasonal pattern and settles as the coat cycles Rapidly worsens, keeps spreading or does not fit the usual seasonal pattern
General health Normal appetite, weight, energy and behavior Changes in weight, thirst, appetite, activity, mood or other body systems

These categories are guides, not a way to diagnose a dog at home. A veterinary examination is appropriate whenever the coat is visibly thinning or the skin and general health have changed.

Possible reasons for excessive shedding or hair loss

There is no established statistic showing how often a particular disease causes shedding in Alaskan Klee Kai, and the available guidance does not prove that this breed is predisposed to any one explanation. The possibilities below are general canine causes that a veterinarian may consider.

Parasites

Fleas, mites and other parasites can irritate the skin. Scratching and chewing can then break hairs or damage follicles. You may see small scabs, redness, flea debris or intense itch, but the absence of visible parasites does not rule them out.

Infection and inflammatory skin disease

Bacterial skin disease, fungal infection such as dermatophytosis, and severe inflammatory disorders can interfere with hair growth or damage the hair shaft and follicle. Scaling, circular areas of loss, crusting, odor, oozing or spreading lesions warrant professional assessment. Some infectious conditions can also affect people or other animals, so avoid sharing brushes and arrange veterinary advice rather than treating a suspected infection with household products.

Allergic or irritant reactions

Allergies and contact irritation may cause persistent itching, licking and self-trauma. A dog can lose hair because it is damaging the coat while trying to relieve an itch, even when the original problem is not a primary hair-growth disorder.

Hormonal or other internal disease

Hormonal problems are among the general causes veterinarians consider when hair loss is persistent, patterned or accompanied by broader changes. Weight change, altered energy, increased thirst or appetite, and changes in skin quality can provide important context. Hair loss alone cannot identify a thyroid disorder or any other endocrine condition.

Nutrition and life stress

A poor or imbalanced diet may affect skin and coat quality. Stress can also contribute to excessive grooming or other behaviors that remove hair. Do not add supplements or change a complete diet solely because your dog is shedding heavily; discuss a nutrition plan with a veterinarian first.

Trauma, follicle damage and self-trauma

Hair can be lost when follicles or shafts are damaged by trauma, persistent rubbing, intense inflammation or repeated licking. Merck Veterinary Manual guidance notes that acquired alopecia can result from impaired hair growth, direct follicle or shaft damage, or discomfort that leads to self-trauma. Some treatments and uncommon toxic exposures can also affect hair, so provide the veterinarian with a full medication and exposure history.

What to do at home before the appointment

  1. Inspect the coat in good light. Part the fur to compare both sides of the body and look for exposed skin, broken hairs, redness, scale, crusts, moisture or parasites.
  2. Record the timeline. Note when the change began, whether it followed a seasonal pattern, how quickly it is spreading and whether your dog is itchy or painful.
  3. Take dated photographs. Images of the same areas every few days can show progression more reliably than memory. Do not delay care while collecting a photo series if your dog is uncomfortable or visibly ill.
  4. Review recent changes. Write down new foods, medications, shampoos, bedding, cleaning products, travel, boarding, contact with other animals and possible toxin exposure.
  5. Prevent further self-trauma. Keep nails trimmed and ask a veterinary professional before using a cone, topical product or medication. Human creams, essential oils and leftover prescriptions can worsen some skin problems or mask useful signs.

Coat care that is appropriate for ordinary shedding

Brush or comb weekly

The Alaskan Klee Kai Club of America and the American Kennel Club recommend weekly brushing and/or combing. A slicker brush and a grooming comb are practical choices for lifting loose undercoat and separating the longer guard hairs. Work gently in small sections, following the direction of hair growth, and stop if the skin becomes irritated or your dog shows pain.

During a seasonal blow, you may need longer grooming sessions or more frequent brief sessions to keep loose fur under control. The purpose is to remove hair that has already detached and keep the coat and skin clean; brushing cannot stop the biological coat cycle and cannot treat baldness, infection or an allergic disease.

Choose tools for the coat and the dog

Consideration What to look for
Coat suitability Teeth or pins that reach the dense undercoat without cutting or pulling healthy guard hairs
Skin safety Tips and pressure that do not scrape, puncture or inflame the skin
Handling A size and shape you can control comfortably around legs, tail, neck and sensitive areas
Cleaning Hair that can be removed easily from the tool between sessions
Dog acceptance A design your Klee Kai tolerates, introduced gradually with rewards

No researched source ranks a particular brush model as medically superior. Treat grooming tools as maintenance equipment, not therapy.

Bathing

PetMD’s veterinarian-reviewed Alaskan Klee Kai care guidance, updated August 28, 2023, also recommends weekly brushing and says the breed generally needs baths only a few times a year. Frequent bathing is not a solution for unexplained hair loss. If the skin is inflamed, foul-smelling, greasy or infected, ask a veterinarian which cleanser and bathing schedule are appropriate.

When to call a veterinarian

Arrange a veterinary appointment when you notice obvious thinning, bald areas, persistent or intense itching, skin lesions, inflammation, signs of infection, pain, rapid progression or changes in weight, appetite, thirst, energy or behavior. These findings matter even if the dog is also in a normal seasonal shedding period.

Seek prompt advice rather than waiting for the next coat cycle when the exposed skin is expanding quickly, your dog cannot stop scratching or chewing, lesions are bleeding or oozing, or discomfort is affecting sleep, movement or eating. A dog that appears systemically ill needs timely care independent of the amount of fur on the floor.

What the veterinarian will need to know

Bring the timeline, photographs and product or medication list. The veterinarian will assess the distribution of loss, the skin and hair shafts, the duration and rate of progression, the degree of itch or pain, possible exposure to parasites or irritants, and your dog’s overall health. Depending on those findings, further skin or laboratory testing may be recommended to distinguish parasites, infection, inflammation, internal disease, nutritional problems or self-trauma.

Do not try to identify the cause from shed-hair volume or a photograph. Several different disorders can look similar at first, and treatment depends on the underlying problem.

Questions owners commonly ask

Is it normal for my Klee Kai to lose most of its undercoat?

It can be normal during a seasonal blow. The breed standard specifically says that temporary absence of an undercoat during shedding season should not be penalized. The skin should still look healthy, and the dog should not have the warning signs listed above.

Can allergies or thyroid problems cause shedding?

They can be considered among general canine causes of coat loss, but shedding does not establish either diagnosis. A veterinarian must interpret the coat pattern together with skin findings and other health changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I shave my Alaskan Klee Kai to control shedding?

Routine guidance supports brushing or combing rather than shaving. Removing the coat does not correct a medical cause and can leave the skin less protected. Discuss any severe matting or a planned clip with a veterinary professional or experienced groomer.
