Fish eggs used as food are called roe. They may be sold or listed as caviar or as a named product such as salmon roe, cod roe, or lumpfish caviar, and can be frozen, cooked, smoked, salted, pasteurized, or otherwise preserved. If you are checking food for a pet, read the exact ingredient list and ask the manufacturer about unfamiliar terms; the available guidance does not establish a safe serving of roe for dogs or cats.
What are fish eggs called?
Roe is the general term for fish eggs. Caviar is narrower: the FSSAI food-additives compendium defines it as sturgeon roe and distinguishes it from products made with roe from other fish.
The compendium gives examples of other fish roe products, including salted salmon roe, cod roe, and lumpfish caviar. Names and preparations vary, so treat these as examples rather than a complete list of every term that may appear on a label or menu.
What foods contain fish eggs?
Roe may be sold on its own or used in prepared foods. The FSSAI compendium describes fish roe products in a range of preparations, including frozen, cooked, smoked, salted, and pasteurized products. A prepared dish or product may also contain other ingredients, so check its ingredient list instead of relying on its name or appearance.

Roe and caviar products
Look for terms such as roe, a named fish roe, or caviar. Examples in the FSSAI compendium include salted salmon roe, cod roe, salted cod roe, and lumpfish caviar. A product name may not tell you all of its ingredients or how it has been processed.
Prepared foods
Fish eggs can be incorporated into prepared foods, but the sources reviewed for this article do not provide a complete inventory of dishes that contain roe. If you are asking about a particular restaurant dish, dip, or packaged food, ask the provider or check the package for the exact ingredients and preparation.

How to tell whether a product contains fish eggs
- Read the complete ingredient panel. Check the exact package rather than relying on the product name, flavor, picture, or front label.
- Look for explicit terms. Search for “roe,” a named fish roe, or “caviar.” These are useful clues, not a complete list of every possible label term.
- Ask about broad or unfamiliar wording. Contact the manufacturer and ask what an unclear ingredient includes. The word “fish” alone does not confirm that a product contains roe.
- Check the rest of the ingredients. Human roe products and prepared foods may include added salt or other ingredients.
For U.S. animal food, the FDA says ingredients generally appear by common or usual name in descending order of predominance by weight, with limited exceptions for qualifying collective names. The FDA’s animal-food labeling guidance and AAFCO’s consumer information can help explain label terms, but an unclear ingredient is best confirmed with the manufacturer.
Roe, caviar, and other fish ingredients compared
| Term or product | What it indicates | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Roe | Fish eggs | Check whether the fish source is named. |
| Caviar | In the FSSAI compendium, sturgeon roe | Check the product description and full ingredient list. |
| Named roe, such as salmon roe or cod roe | Roe identified with a fish source | Check the preparation and any additional ingredients. |
| Fish or fish muscle | A fish-derived ingredient; the word alone does not mean roe | Ask the manufacturer if you need to know whether roe is included. |
What about pet food and fish-flavored treats?
A fish-flavored product or an ingredient described as fish does not, by itself, establish that fish eggs are present. Read the complete ingredient panel. If the label uses a broad or unfamiliar term and you need to know whether it includes roe, ask the manufacturer for clarification.

AAFCO explains naming conventions for animal-source ingredients in pet food. Those definitions do not mean that every fish-derived ingredient contains roe.
Can dogs and cats eat fish eggs?
The sources reviewed do not establish that plain fish roe is safe or toxic for dogs or cats, and they do not give a safe serving size. Do not assume roe is an appropriate pet treat. Preparation and accompanying ingredients matter: the FDA lists salt and fatty foods among items that may be dangerous to pets generally, but does not identify roe specifically.

For advice about an individual pet, contact your veterinarian. The FDA says it does not provide guidance on individual pet-health issues normally handled by a veterinarian. If your pet may have eaten something potentially dangerous, the FDA advises contacting a veterinarian or pet poison-control center.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is roe the same as caviar?
Roe is the general term for fish eggs. The FSSAI compendium defines caviar as sturgeon roe and discusses other fish roe products separately.
How can I tell if pet food contains fish eggs?
Read the complete ingredient panel and look for “roe,” a named fish roe, or “caviar.” If a broad or unfamiliar term leaves you unsure, ask the manufacturer what it includes.
Does an ingredient called fish mean the food contains roe?
No. A fish ingredient does not by itself establish that fish eggs are included. Check the named ingredient and contact the manufacturer if necessary.
Can my dog or cat eat caviar?
The sources reviewed do not establish a safe amount of caviar or plain roe for pets. The FDA lists salt and fatty foods as general concerns for pets, but does not address roe specifically. Ask your veterinarian about your individual pet.
