Domestic baby ducklings should eat a complete starter ration made for ducklings or waterfowl, with clean drinking water always available. If duck feed is unavailable, chick starter may be a temporary fallback—but chicken and duck feeds are not necessarily nutritionally interchangeable, especially when it comes to niacin. Avoid making bread, crackers, popcorn, or other snack foods part of their diet, and never offer damp or moldy feed.
What do baby ducklings eat?
Make complete starter feed the staple
Choose a commercially prepared complete starter ration labeled for ducklings or waterfowl, and follow its directions for the birds’ age. A complete feed is designed to supply the nutrients needed for growth; treats and table scraps should not replace it. Cornell’s Duck Research Laboratory recommends complete duck feeds when available: Duck Nutrition.
Use chick starter only as a fallback
Some university guidance allows chick starter when duck starter is unavailable, but the advice is not uniform about its nutritional suitability. Cornell describes chicken feed as a satisfactory substitute when duck rations are unavailable, while UC Davis’s California Veterinary Emergency Team says chicken feed has inadequate niacin for ducks. Check the label and ask a poultry veterinarian or local extension office which formulation is appropriate for your feed and flock. Do not add a niacin supplement by guesswork: the cited UC Davis guide mentions brewer’s yeast in an emergency context but does not give a duckling-specific dose. See Cornell’s nutrition guidance and the UC Davis feeding guide, last updated January 2025.
Follow the feed’s age directions
Starter-to-grower schedules vary by source and management system, so there is no single schedule here that applies to every breed, flock, and product. Missouri Extension describes chick or poult starter for the first week to ten days, followed by a grower ration with grain; Wisconsin Extension describes starter crumble and free-choice feeding. Treat those as recommendations from their respective guidance, not as a universal rule. Use the chosen feed’s label and seek local veterinary or extension advice if its directions are unclear. What should you avoid feeding them?
Keep bread and snack foods off the menu
Do not use bread, crackers, popcorn, or other people food as a meaningful part of a duckling’s diet. These foods are nutritionally unsuitable compared with a complete ration. Tufts veterinary guidance identifies such foods as poor choices for waterfowl; that is a reason to avoid feeding them, not evidence that one accidental nibble is necessarily an acute poisoning event. Tufts: Feeding Wildlife.
Discard feed that is damp, moldy, or contaminated
Store feed dry and clean. Cornell warns that excess moisture can lead to mold, and some molds produce toxins that are particularly harmful to ducks. If offering moist scraps, provide only what the ducklings will eat promptly rather than leaving wet food to spoil. Cornell Duck Nutrition.

How should you provide feed and water?
Keep clean drinking water available alongside feed, and use feeder and waterer equipment that young birds can reach. Arrange access so ducklings can drink without soaking or contaminating their feed, and keep stored feed dry. Cornell’s duckling management guidance discusses feed and water access for newly hatched birds; Missouri Extension likewise says ducklings are ready for feed and water on arrival. A wild duckling is a wildlife situation, not the same as feeding domestic ducklings you are raising. The care guidance above is not a rehabilitation protocol. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for advice rather than attempting to feed or raise the bird yourself.
