Researchers examined recovered heads and found linear rake marks consistent with dolphin teeth on seven heads from one 2015 sighting. The examined heads had been separated behind the dorsal and pectoral spines.
The injury-avoidance explanation is the researchers’ proposed function, supported by the fish’s anatomy and the observations. It is not a directly tested account of each dolphin’s motivation. The study also documented 38 stranding-record instances of significant trauma or death attributed to ingestion of whole marine catfish; this is a count in stranding records, not an estimate of the risk to any dolphin that encounters a catfish.

How might dolphins separate the head?
Researchers did not directly witness the moment a catfish’s head was separated. At Mississippi Sound, dolphins were seen rolling on their long axis during probable feeding and thrashing at the surface with catfish in their mouths. At Saint Joseph Bay, dolphins were seen lunging with catfish held perpendicular to the rostrum or grasped tail-first, leaving the head exposed.
From these observations, the researchers proposed that dolphins may grip the fish and use torsional or shearing force—possibly by rotating or shaking it—to separate the head region. Treat this as a proposed mechanism, not a confirmed sequence.
How many dolphins have been seen doing this?
Ronje and colleagues reviewed 50,167 dolphin-group sightings across four northern Gulf of Mexico survey areas. Severed catfish heads were associated with 13 groups displaying feeding behavior. Photo identification linked eight dolphins with severed heads across three sightings spanning about 350 km of coast.

The study found severed catfish heads in approximately 1% or less of recorded feeding or probable-feeding observations in each survey area. This is a statistic about the study records, not a global prevalence estimate. Survey effort differed among areas, and visual surveys could miss feeding at night. The researchers say more work is needed to understand the behavior’s prevalence, geographic reach, and possible links to local ecology, genetics, or social learning.

The observations indicate that dolphins eat the posterior body after the head region is separated. In this feeding context, the head region is left behind rather than being shown to serve a separate purpose.
The study supports dolphin involvement in the observed events, including through the rake marks on examined heads, but it does not establish that every head is handled or discarded in exactly the same way.

Do dolphins use fish heads for sex?
The reviewed scientific evidence does not show that dolphins routinely use fish heads for sexual purposes. The catfish study concerns prey handling and a possible feeding-related way to avoid dangerous spines; it does not report a sexual function.
A separate scientific report about spontaneous ejaculation in a wild Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin stated that no sexual or socio-sexual behavior was observed and did not involve a fish head. That event is not evidence for the viral fish-head claim.
Do all dolphins handle fish this way?
No. The study documents a rarely observed behavior in particular Gulf Coast settings. It does not show that all dolphins, or even all bottlenose dolphins in the region, use this tactic.
