Before you bring a cat home, get a copy of the signed adoption, sale, or transfer agreement; request the cat’s available veterinary and vaccination records; and confirm how its microchip registration will be updated. Also ask whether spay or neuter care is complete and check your local licensing rules. The exact paperwork varies by source and location—there is no universal document set.
Documents to request before taking your cat home
Use this checklist whether you are adopting from a shelter or rescue, buying from a breeder, or accepting a private transfer. Keep digital or paper copies somewhere you can find them for future veterinary visits and ownership questions.
- Signed adoption, sale, or transfer agreement: Check that it identifies the parties and cat, records the transfer date and any fees or obligations, and states any return or follow-up terms. Read it before signing and keep your own copy. Seattle Animal Shelter includes a signed adoption contract in its process (Seattle adoption information). New South Wales guidance recommends putting the adopter’s full legal first and last name on the paperwork to make an ownership transfer easier (NSW buying or adopting a pet).
- Available veterinary and medical records: Ask for records of prior diagnoses, treatment, medications, and recommended follow-up. Ask what is missing, too: a shelter may only be able to provide the records it has, not a complete lifetime history. Seattle says adopters receive copies of available medical and behavioral records (Seattle adoption information).
- Vaccination documentation: Request the cat’s vaccination card or certificates, with dates and vaccine details, and ask what is due next. Tottori City says formal adopters receive proof of vaccination (Tottori City adoption guidance). NSW guidance says rescue animals are generally vaccinated, but that is not a substitute for getting the individual cat’s records (NSW buying or adopting a pet).
- Microchip number and registration details: Get the number and the name of the registry or service. Confirm whether the contact details have been transferred to you; if not, ask how to update them and what you need to do. Seattle describes registering a chip during adoption where applicable, while Tottori City says adopters receive microchip identification documentation and must complete an owner change (Seattle adoption information; Tottori City adoption guidance).
- Spay or neuter record, or written follow-up terms: If the cat has been sterilised, request the veterinary record or certificate. If the procedure is still pending, get the agreement, deadline, voucher, or appointment details in writing. Singapore’s licensing guidance lists veterinary sterilisation certificates, examination letters, or vaccination cards showing sterilisation status as possible supporting documents (Singapore pet licensing guidance).
- Local licence or registration paperwork: Ask the relevant city, county, state, or national animal authority whether you must apply, pay a fee, or submit supporting documents. For example, Seattle requires residents to buy a one-year pet licence at adoption (Seattle adoption information). Singapore’s licensing authority describes supporting documents for different application circumstances (Singapore pet licensing guidance).
How paperwork differs by where the cat comes from
Shelter or rescue adoption
Expect the organisation’s adoption agreement and ask for the medical, vaccination, and microchip information it has. Before signing, clarify what care remains due and whether you must complete a licence, registry change, or sterilisation appointment yourself. Practices differ: Seattle describes a signed contract, available medical and behavioral records, and chip registration where applicable; Tottori City describes vaccination proof and microchip identification paperwork with an owner-change step (Seattle adoption information; Tottori City adoption guidance).
Breeder or seller purchase
Ask for a written sale or transfer record, the available veterinary and vaccination paperwork, and clear instructions for updating the microchip record. Legal requirements depend on where the transaction takes place. In France, government guidance says an acquirer must receive a transfer certificate and a veterinary certificate issued no more than three months earlier; an information document is also required in specified circumstances. The same guidance describes a seven-day waiting period after the commitment-and-knowledge certificate is issued (French government guidance on acquiring a pet). These are France-specific rules, not a worldwide checklist.

It is suitable for animal rescue organizations, pet adoption activities, family memorial ceremonies and other scenes. It is not only a witness to love, but also a symbol of responsibility.
Private transfer
Ask the current owner to sign a transfer record that identifies both parties, the cat, and the date. Request the same medical, vaccination, sterilisation, and microchip details you would seek from a shelter or seller. NSW guidance explains that a seller or breeder can transfer official ownership using the buyer’s Pet Registry profile after purchase confirmation; check the process that applies to your location (NSW buying or adopting a pet).
What to do if records are missing
- Ask the shelter, rescue, seller, or former owner to say exactly which records are unavailable and whether copies can be requested from a veterinarian.
- Do not treat a verbal assurance as proof of vaccination, sterilisation, or past medical care. Ask a veterinarian what should be checked or repeated based on the information you do have.
- Arrange a veterinary visit to establish a current care plan. An examination can guide care from this point forward, but it cannot recreate undocumented medical history.
- If the microchip number is available, contact the named registry or service and confirm the contact details associated with it.
Check local law separately from the handover paperwork
The forms a shelter or seller gives you do not necessarily satisfy local licensing or registration rules. Requirements differ by jurisdiction and may depend on the cat’s circumstances. Ask your local animal authority what must be filed, by whom, and when. The examples above span Seattle, France, Singapore, New South Wales, and Tottori City; they show why one place’s paperwork should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
