In the UK, a veterinary nurse may provide hands-on nursing care, prepare animals for imaging and surgery, assist in theatre, monitor anaesthesia and recovery, and support owners. The title’s comparisons with nurses, phlebotomists and radiographers describe a breadth of work—not five separate licences or permission to perform every procedure independently. Veterinary nursing is a distinct profession regulated by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), and a nurse’s duties depend on competence, training, the practice setting and veterinary direction.
What does a vet nurse do?
The RCVS sets minimum Day-One Competences for registration. These cover caring for patients, preparing imaging procedures in line with safety requirements, getting the patient, environment and equipment ready for surgery, assisting the veterinary surgeon as a scrubbed nurse, helping prepare for anaesthesia, and assisting with anaesthesia maintenance and monitoring. The standards also include pain assessment, animal behaviour, infection control, clinical records and advice to clients on health and welfare. RCVS Day-One Competences

In everyday practice, the mix varies. The National Careers Service lists possible duties such as preparing animals for treatment, assisting vets during procedures, taking X-rays, giving injections and medication, removing stitches, caring for inpatients, keeping equipment and clinical areas hygienic, and talking with owners about treatment and animal care. Some nurses also take on reception or administrative work. These are examples, not a checklist every veterinary nurse performs in every workplace. National Careers Service: Veterinary nurse

- Nursing: Nurses assess and provide patient care, monitor changes and support recovery.
- Radiography: Competence standards include preparing imaging procedures safely; taking X-rays is also listed as a possible day-to-day task.
- Surgical assistance: Nurses may prepare the patient and theatre, then assist the veterinary surgeon as a scrubbed nurse.
- Anaesthesia support: Nurses may assist with maintenance and monitoring, including recovery, under veterinary direction.
- Caregiving and communication: Inpatient care and clear conversations with owners are part of the work, alongside records and welfare advice.
Is a vet nurse a phlebotomist?
Blood sampling may be part of an individual nurse’s work where they are trained, competent and appropriately directed. It is not established as a universal or defining duty for all UK veterinary nurses, and “phlebotomist” should not be read as a separate protected title conferred by veterinary-nurse registration.

What can a veterinary nurse do independently?
Veterinary nurses are not independent veterinary practitioners. In the UK, only people appropriately registered with the RCVS have the right to practise veterinary nursing. The RCVS Code requires nurses to put animal health and welfare first, work within their competence, refer appropriately, administer medicines responsibly, communicate with veterinary colleagues and clients, obtain informed consent, and maintain clear clinical and client records. RCVS Code of Professional Conduct for Veterinary Nurses
Schedule 3 of the Veterinary Surgeons Act permits an RCVS-registered veterinary nurse to carry out certain medical treatment or minor surgery that does not involve entry into a body cavity only under specified conditions. The animal must be under a veterinary surgeon’s care; the directing surgeon must be the nurse’s employer or acting as employer; and that surgeon must be satisfied the nurse is qualified for the work. The nurse is not entitled to undertake medical treatment or minor surgery independently. GOV.UK: Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966
What veterinary direction means
RCVS guidance describes direction as the veterinary surgeon instructing the nurse about the tasks; the vet does not necessarily have to be present. Student nurses have additional supervision requirements, and minor surgery during training requires direct, continuous, personal supervision. Anaesthesia has a specific boundary
A nurse may administer a specific quantity of a drug directed by a veterinary surgeon to induce anaesthesia. Incremental administration to effect to induce or maintain anaesthesia, however, may only be carried out by a veterinary surgeon. Assisting with anaesthesia monitoring does not mean independently choosing or controlling anaesthetic drug doses.
How do I become a vet nurse?
The RCVS describes two qualification routes that can lead to registration. Both require meeting the relevant requirements; course entry criteria and delivery vary, so check current details with accredited awarding organisations or universities. RCVS: Education and training for veterinary nurses
| Route | Qualification and structure | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Further education | Includes a Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing; may be studied full-time or through an apprenticeship-style route alongside practice work. | Provider entry criteria, course format and clinical practice arrangements. |
| Higher education | Higher-education veterinary nursing qualification with clinical placements at an approved training practice. | University entry criteria, placement arrangements and course delivery. |
Day-One Competence is the minimum standard for registration, not the end of professional development. Newly registered nurses are expected to work at primary-care level under veterinary direction and refer matters to more experienced colleagues when appropriate. Further training or qualifications may be needed for some roles. The RCVS also states that continuing professional development is required after registration; its published guidance should be checked for the current requirements.

The role combines practical clinical work with close attention to animal welfare and communication with people who may be worried about their pets. Depending on the practice, a nurse may move between patient monitoring, cleaning and infection control, preparing equipment, supporting procedures, recording care and explaining treatment or home-care advice. The National Careers Service describes the work as potentially physically and emotionally demanding.
