What Fiber Can—and Can’t—Tell Us About the Carnivore Microbiome

Fiber can change gut microbes, but responses vary and short-term human studies do not establish what happens on a strict carnivore diet. The direct long-term evidence described here is one person sampled once, not a basis for general claims or pet-feeding advice.

Fiber affects gut microbes, but the effect depends on the type and dose of fiber and on the person eating it. For people following a strict carnivore diet, the direct long-term microbiome evidence is exceptionally limited: the key published report described one person at one sampling point. It cannot show what typically happens to the microbiome—or whether the diet causes health benefits or harm.

This article concerns the human carnivore diet, not the biology or feeding needs of carnivorous pets. The human studies below are not pet nutrition evidence or feeding advice.

Does fiber feed gut bacteria on the carnivore diet?

Fiber can affect gut bacteria, but “fiber” is not a single, uniform intervention. Different kinds, amounts, diets and individuals can produce different measured responses. Because a strict carnivore diet excludes plant foods, it generally excludes the dietary sources of fiber studied in the cited trials. Those trials do not establish what happens when someone follows a carnivore diet long term.

Fiber is a broad category of carbohydrates that are not digested in the same way as most other dietary carbohydrates. Some types can be fermented by gut microbes. But knowing that a food or supplement contains fiber does not predict a specific change in an individual’s microbiome, and a change in a microbial measurement does not by itself establish a health benefit or harm.

Michael Snyder, the Stanford School of Medicine study lead quoted by the National Institutes of Health, summarized the issue this way: “Overall, our findings show that the benefits of fiber are dependent on fiber type, dose, and participant—a landscape of factors resulting from interactions between fiber, the gut microbiome, and host.” The NIH’s account of the study describes short-term supplementation, not a carnivore diet.

What does the carnivore-specific study actually show?

Karačić and colleagues’ 2024 case study is a useful description of one person, not a forecast for everyone who eats this way. The researchers compared one stool sample from a healthy 32-year-old man who reported following a carnivore diet for four years with selected omnivore comparison groups. The study selected 151 omnivore controls, stratified by reported meat-eating frequency.

The report found no difference from controls in the measured alpha and beta diversity or inferred functional capacity, while also describing taxonomic and functional distinctions. These results are not contradictory: a study can find differences in particular taxa or inferred functions while not finding a difference in its diversity measures. The study also reported taxa the authors describe as associated with fiber degradation.

That last observation does not show that the participant ate fiber, that those microbes were beneficial, or that another person on the diet would have the same microbes. A single sample from a single participant cannot establish a typical pattern, explain changes over time, or show that a diet caused the observed findings. The authors explicitly caution against generalizing from the case. Read the case study.

How to read the evidence

  • What it describes: one individual’s reported diet history and one microbiome sample, compared with selected omnivore controls.
  • What it does not establish: how common the reported microbiome pattern is among carnivore dieters, whether it persists over time, or whether it leads to a clinical outcome.
  • What the microbial findings cannot prove: that fiber was consumed, that fiber-degrading taxa supplied a health benefit, or that their presence prevents harm from excluding fiber.

A cross-sectional article on long-term carnivore adherence and gut microbiota appeared in 2026 search results, but its page was inaccessible when checked. Its findings therefore cannot be assessed here, and no conclusions from it are included.

What do fiber studies tell us about responses between people?

They show why it is risky to predict an individual’s microbiome response from an average—or to transfer short-term supplement findings to a strict carnivore diet. In a 2022 Stanford-led study summarized by NIH, 18 participants received different fiber supplements in three-week periods. Long-chain inulin was associated with an increase in Bifidobacterium; arabinoxylan was associated, for most participants, with reduced cholesterol and increased bile acids. Responses varied between participants.

The same NIH summary says high doses of inulin were associated with increased inflammation markers and alanine aminotransferase in a few participants. It also reports that microbial diversity decreased during purified fiber supplementation. Those observations concern the tested supplements, doses and short intervention periods. They do not mean fiber generally reduces diversity, that these effects occur with ordinary foods, or that a person on a carnivore diet should take a supplement. NIH provides the study details and context.

A 2024 reanalysis examined 21 dietary fiber interventions from 12 human studies involving 538 participants. Across those short-term interventions, increased fiber explained an average of 1.5% of gut bacterial compositional variation, while 82% was attributed to the individual. The reanalysis reported reduced alpha diversity in the short interventions, alongside consistent responses in some bacterial groups. The figures describe variation in microbiome composition in the analyzed studies; they are not estimates of health effects or proof that fiber is harmful. The mSystems article explains the reanalysis.

Evidence Participants and duration What was measured or reported What it can support
Fiber supplement study, NIH summary (2022) 18 participants; three-week supplement periods Different responses to arabinoxylan and long-chain inulin; microbiome and other measured outcomes Responses differed by fiber type and participant; not a carnivore-diet result
Reanalysis, mSystems (2024) 21 interventions from 12 human studies; 538 participants Average 1.5% of bacterial compositional variation associated with increased fiber; 82% attributed to the individual Short-term microbiome responses varied substantially between people; not a clinical outcome estimate
Carnivore case study (2024) One participant; reported four years on the diet; one stool sample Microbiome measures compared with 151 selected omnivore controls A description of one case, not a typical or causal effect

What happens to the gut microbiome without dietary fiber?

The available evidence does not establish one predictable outcome. The direct carnivore report is too small to answer what usually happens, while studies that change fiber intake over a few weeks are not studies of long-term strict carnivore eating. Microbiome composition, microbial function and clinical health are related questions, but a finding about one does not automatically answer the others.

For broader context, NIDDK describes a controlled feeding crossover study in 17 healthy, weight-stable adults. Participants ate a microbiome-enhancer diet with more fiber and minimally processed food and a lower-fiber Western diet for about three weeks per condition. The higher-fiber dietary pattern was associated with changes in microbiome composition and function and with 116 additional calories lost in stool per day compared with the Western diet.

That study changed a whole dietary pattern, not fiber alone. Its findings therefore cannot isolate fiber’s contribution or establish what happens on a carnivore diet. The stool-energy difference is a measured result of that comparison, not a prediction about weight change or health for people eating differently. NIDDK summarizes the feeding study.

Can microbiome diversity tell you whether a diet is healthy?

Not on its own. Alpha diversity describes diversity within a sample, while beta diversity describes differences between samples. Taxonomic composition refers to which microbes are detected and their relative representation; inferred functional capacity estimates potential functions from microbial data. Each is a different kind of measurement. None, by itself, demonstrates that a diet improves or worsens a person’s health.

This distinction matters when reading headlines about diversity. The short-term fiber reanalysis reported reduced alpha diversity, but that finding is not a general conclusion that fiber harms the microbiome. Likewise, the carnivore case study’s lack of a detected diversity difference from controls does not demonstrate long-term safety or benefit. Neither result supplies a clinical health verdict.

The World Gastroenterology Organisation describes possible fiber effects on stool bulk, transit, glycemic control, cholesterol, fermentation and microbial profiles, while noting that well-controlled human trials are needed to confirm links between microbiota and health. Its Diet and the Gut guideline provides general clinical context, not evidence specific to carnivore diets.

Does general fiber guidance apply to carnivore dieters?

General guidance can explain how fiber is discussed in clinical care, but it cannot prove that a carnivore dieter needs a supplement or that a supplement prevents microbiome harm. The World Gastroenterology Organisation discusses gradually increasing fiber over weeks in the context of constipation and mentions dietary or supplemental fiber. That passage is not a universal treatment instruction or a carnivore-specific recommendation.

The American College of Gastroenterology’s guideline addresses irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), describes fiber’s gastrointestinal effects as diverse and incompletely understood, and identifies psyllium as a soluble fiber source. It is guidance for a particular clinical condition, not a prescription for everyone or evidence about strict carnivore eating. Read the ACG IBS guideline.

If you are considering a major diet change, have ongoing digestive symptoms, or are managing a diagnosed condition, discuss your circumstances with a qualified clinician or registered dietitian. Advice about fiber for constipation or IBS should take account of the condition and the person; a general guideline does not determine what is appropriate for every individual.

How should you evaluate claims about carnivore diets and gut bacteria?

Start by checking whether the evidence actually studied the diet and outcome in the claim. A supplement trial, a whole-diet feeding study and a one-person case report answer different questions. A claim about health needs clinical outcomes, not only a difference in bacterial composition or a diversity score.

  • Check the population and diet: Was the study of people following a strict carnivore diet, or of participants receiving a fiber supplement or a different whole-food diet?
  • Check the duration and sampling: Was diet adherence reported over years, or was the intervention only a few weeks? Were participants sampled once or repeatedly?
  • Check the fiber details: Which fiber, dose and food or supplement were used? Findings for inulin cannot automatically be applied to arabinoxylan or fiber-containing foods.
  • Check the endpoint: Did the study measure microbial composition, inferred function, symptoms, laboratory markers or a clinical health outcome?
  • Check the study size and design: A single-person case can generate a question; it cannot establish how common a result is or whether the diet caused it.

On those criteria, the most defensible conclusion is narrow: fiber can affect gut microbes, and responses vary. The available direct long-term carnivore evidence described here is too limited to say what typically happens to the microbiome or to establish a health effect. That conclusion concerns human diets and should not be used to infer the nutritional needs of dogs, cats or other pets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a carnivore diet mean the gut has no bacteria that use fiber?

No conclusion like that follows from the available case report. Its finding of taxa associated with fiber degradation does not establish whether those microbes were active, what substrate they used, or whether the same taxa are present in other people.

Can a stool microbiome test tell me whether a carnivore diet is harming me?

The studies summarized here do not establish that a stool microbiome profile can diagnose diet-related harm in an individual. A microbial result should not substitute for assessment of symptoms and clinical health by a qualified professional.

Does this human research explain what cats or dogs need to eat?

No. The cited studies concern human participants and do not test pet diets or establish nutritional requirements for cats, dogs or other animals. Pet feeding decisions need evidence and guidance specific to the animal and its life stage.
