Missouri’s Current River is best known for smallmouth bass, rainbow trout, and brown trout. Those are the headline sport fish, not a complete list of the river’s fish: the species anglers encounter and the rules that apply vary by section.
Which fish are the Current River’s best-known sport fish?
The National Park Service identifies smallmouth bass, rainbow trout, and brown trout as key sport-fishing opportunities in the Current and Jacks Fork rivers. Smallmouth bass are a prominent target on the river, while trout are especially important in designated upper-river management areas.
The National Park Service describes the rivers as offering “some of the best sport fishing opportunities in the country” for those fish. That is the agency’s characterization, not a measured ranking or guarantee of a catch. National Park Service fishing regulations
How does the fish community vary along the river?
Upper Current River
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) describes the upper Current as the 19-mile stretch from Montauk State Park to Akers Ferry. Trout fishing is a major draw there, and two designated trout management areas lie below Montauk.

- FIELD GUIDE TO FRESHWATER FISH
In the nine-mile reach from the lower boundary of Montauk State Park to Cedargrove Access, management focuses on large brown trout. MDC’s published rules for this area specify one trout per day, a minimum length of 18 inches, and the use of hard-plastic artificial lures or flies only. Check the current MDC fishing regulations for the exact location and method before fishing, since rules can change. More detail is available on MDC’s upper Current River fishing-prospects page.
Middle and lower Current River
National Park Service fish-community information says most of the fish species it collected came from the middle and lower sections, where the water is slightly warmer. Smallmouth bass are among the notable sport fish in the lower river; MDC maintains a separate lower Current River fishing-prospects page.

The park’s ecological examples include darters, sculpins, and madtoms, fish that are sensitive to habitat conditions and water quality. They illustrate the wider fish community, but are not a complete checklist or a promise of what an angler will catch. The National Park Service’s fish-communities overview explains the section differences.
How many fish species are in the Current River?
National Park Service sources give two figures with different scopes, so neither should be read as an exact count of species currently present in the main river channel:

- Pocket Naturalist Freshwater Fishes by James Kavanagh - 9781583551837
- The NPS animals overview reports 112 fish species in Ozark National Scenic Riverways. NPS animals overview
- An NPS inventory page, last updated October 15, 2018, says the Current River basin contains 112 of the 270 fish species known from the Mississippi River system. It includes six endemic species and one subspecies found only in the Current River. This is a basin-level figure, not a channel-only count. NPS fish inventory information
These figures convey the river system’s diversity, but the official pages cited here do not provide one consolidated, exhaustive species checklist for the entire Current River.

Rules depend on the reach, species, and fishing method. NPS says a valid fishing permit is required in the park, with a trout permit also required when fishing for trout. Consult NPS fishing regulations and MDC’s current regulations for the precise location and method. In particular, do not assume the special brown-trout rules below Montauk apply throughout the river—or that general river rules override those reach-specific requirements.
