The fish rediscovered after more than 85 years without a recorded specimen is Channa amphibeus, known as the Chel Snakehead or Bora Chung. Researchers reported three specimens collected in 2024, along with photographic records, from a species endemic to India’s Himalayan region. The long gap prompted speculation that the fish might be extinct, but the study does not say it was formally declared extinct.
What fish was rediscovered after 85 years?
Channa amphibeus is a large snakehead fish also called the Chel Snakehead and Bora Chung. The peer-reviewed report describes it as endemic to the Himalayan region of India. Its authors published the rediscovery report in Zootaxa on January 31, 2025: the study of Channa amphibeus.
Where was the Chel Snakehead found?
Independent reporting places the rediscovery in the Chel River area of Kalimpong, North Bengal, India. The report available from Hindustan Times identifies the area, but does not establish a precise collection site or coordinates: Hindustan Times’ coverage of the find.
What does “rediscovered after 85 years” mean?
The paper cites historical specimen records from 1918 to 1933 and reports new specimens collected in 2024. It describes the gap as more than 85 years. That is a gap in recorded specimens—not proof that the fish disappeared from the entire region or was continuously absent during that time.

The researchers reported three specimens and additional photographic records. They also supplied biometric and genetic data. The study abstract identifies those kinds of evidence, but the information available here does not support a detailed comparison of the methods or findings.
Was the fish officially declared extinct?
No formal extinction declaration is established by the sources cited here. The paper says the prolonged lack of records led to speculation that the species may have gone extinct. “Thought possibly extinct” or “feared extinct” describes that uncertainty; it should not be mistaken for a confirmed official status.

What is still unknown about the species?
The rediscovery report does not establish the fish’s current abundance, population trend, or a formal conservation assessment following the new records. It also does not provide enough information here to state detailed survey methods or a precise collection location. Rediscovery confirms that specimens were found; on its own, it does not show how secure the species is.
Although one news report describes the fish as ornamental, that is not evidence that it is responsibly or legally available to keep. The cited sources offer no guidance for acquiring or caring for wild Chel Snakeheads.
