In June 2024, River Guardians asked the public to report sightings and share footage of Dunedoo and her entangled calf, Hope, in the Swan and Canning rivers. The calf was not rescued: a later attempt to capture and disentangle her failed. River Guardians’ current profile says Hope has not been seen since January 2025 and is presumed deceased—not confirmed dead.
What happened to Dunedoo’s calf?
Hope was born in April 2023 and was the calf at the centre of River Guardians’ 2024 appeal. Dunedoo’s older calf, Marnz, is a different dolphin. River Guardians’ 25 June 2024 update confirmed that what looked like a growth above Hope’s rostrum—the front of her snout—was fishing line wrapped around it. Survey photographs also showed line around her dorsal fin.

The program reported that Hope appeared to forage with Dunedoo and other dolphins, but was also observed resting for long periods. A later River Guardians guide described line around her pectoral fins and concern that cuts could leave her vulnerable to infection. The guide also recounted a shark encounter; it did not establish a medical diagnosis or a confirmed cause of Hope’s later disappearance. How the public was asked to help
The appeal was a dated request for information, not a call for the public to approach or try to free the calf. River Guardians asked people to watch for the mother-calf pair, which tended to swim close together, and send footage to the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA), or contact River Guardians through Facebook. The program said that footage of Moon had helped before and urged people to keep an eye out for Dunedoo and her calf. The appeal was published on 25 June 2024; PerthNow had reported the public call on 18 May 2024 in its contemporaneous report.

That request is historical, not a current alert. Anyone with a present-day dolphin sighting or concern should use current guidance from DBCA or River Guardians rather than treating the 2024 appeal as active instructions.
Why disentangling Hope was difficult
Finding a dolphin does not guarantee responders can safely capture and free it. River Guardians said the pair moved widely through the Riverpark, and weather, water clarity and depth made it harder to locate Hope and assess an opportunity to intervene. Line was difficult to see from a distance, which made reliable footage and close observation useful to the response team.

DBCA staff, researchers and veterinarians coordinated an attempt to locate the calf, but could not find her that day. On a subsequent operation, responders did find her among resident dolphins. They deployed a specially designed net to try to capture and disentangle her, but the attempt failed. In its 25 July 2024 update, River Guardians said Hope remained entangled, was moving quickly and resting less, and had been seen socialising and foraging. The program said monitoring would continue and responders would attempt intervention if an opportunity arose.
What happened to Hope afterward?
River Guardians’ current Perth dolphins profile says Hope has not been seen since January 2025 and is presumed deceased. That wording matters: the program does not report a confirmed death or give a confirmed cause. The same profile says Dunedoo had another calf in April 2026. That is a different calf from Hope.
