A motorist found a dead mother kangaroo caught by the neck and foot on a fence near Sutherlands Creek, Victoria, according to a March 3, 2025 report by Indian Defence Review, which attributed its account to Yahoo News. Rescuers who attended said the joey in her pouch was too small to survive.
What happened near Sutherlands Creek?
The report says a motorist came across the kangaroo early on a Friday morning in rural Victoria. The animal was caught by both her neck and a foot in a fence. Wildlife rescuer Angela Summer and a volunteer from Bannockburn Wildlife Rescue attended. The article says the mother had likely been trapped overnight; it does not establish exactly how long she was caught.
Summer described it as “a horrible case” and said, “The joey was just too tiny. It wasn’t viable.” Those words are reproduced by Indian Defence Review as statements made to Yahoo News, rather than independently verified interviews.
Why can a fence be dangerous to kangaroos?
The report identifies barbed wire, particularly when used along the top of a fence, as a potential entanglement hazard. A kangaroo caught by a limb or neck may be unable to free itself and can be injured while struggling. The article describes the danger but does not provide systematic injury data or research establishing how often these incidents occur.

It also mentions a kangaroo found dangling by a foot in Whittlesea about two weeks earlier; that animal reportedly survived. These two reported incidents illustrate the risk, but they do not establish how common fence entanglements are across Victoria or Australia.
Is there a reliable count of kangaroos trapped on fences?
No official tally or formal study statistic is given in the article. A rescuer identified only as Michael is quoted saying, “Usually, there’s about a case a day where one’s trapped. It’s heartbreaking.” That is one rescuer’s reported estimate, not a verified daily or national rate.

What changes to fences were suggested?
Summer reportedly suggested using reflective tape or white markings to make fences more visible. The article presents this as a suggestion, not as a tested intervention: it gives no measurements of effectiveness and does not compare fence treatments or explain which approach suits different sites and livestock.
The report also describes property owner Doug Gimesy removing 17 kilometres of barbed wire from his property in Wongarra over 10 months. This is an individual reported effort, not evidence that removing that amount of wire produces a particular conservation outcome or offers a solution for every property. Gimesy said he first saw an eastern grey kangaroo caught in the fence after moving in, then walked his fence lines twice before realizing he needed to remove both top wires.
