In early January 2004, Steve Irwin fed a crocodile at Australia Zoo while carrying his one-month-old son, Robert “Bob” Irwin. The moment, billed as “Bob’s Croc Feeding Debut,” prompted complaints and a Queensland government inquiry. Contemporary reports record Irwin’s defense of his judgment and a witness’s view that camera angle exaggerated how close the baby appeared—but they do not establish the exact distance or an independent safety finding.
What the footage showed
At Australia Zoo in Beerwah, Queensland, Irwin fed a crocodile with one hand while holding Robert in his other arm and walking inside the crocodile enclosure, according to ABC News’s report of 3 January 2004. The event was presented as “Bob’s Croc Feeding Debut.” Robert was born on 1 December 2003, according to Australia Zoo’s family biography, consistent with reports describing him as one month old.

Reports place the incident in the first days of January 2004, but the ABC accounts vary in their event-day wording. “Early January 2004” is the clearest date that can be stated without choosing between those accounts.
Why the incident drew complaints
ABC reported that Queensland’s Families Department had received complaints, was seeking the unedited footage, and wanted to learn what safety measures had been taken in preparation. Federal Opposition families spokesman Wayne Swan called Irwin’s action “a very irresponsible action,” as quoted in the same ABC report.

In a separate contemporaneous account, ABC quoted Acting Queensland Premier Terry Mackenroth as saying Irwin would not face charges. Mackenroth said the department had been assured the incident would not be repeated. That was a reported no-charges position alongside an inquiry—not a court ruling or a formal determination that the stunt was safe. (ABC News, 3 January 2004)
Irwin’s defense and apology
Speaking to reporters at Australia Zoo, Irwin said, “I had a safe working distance with that crocodile when that took place.” He also apologized for the alarm the incident caused: “I’m so sorry that it’s got to this, but that’s the way it is—if I could have my time again I would probably do things a little differently.” ABC reported that Irwin said he wanted his children to learn crocodile awareness because they lived in crocodile territory. These were Irwin’s own explanations, not an independent assessment of the risk. (ABC News, 3 January 2004)

What a witness said about the camera angle
Visitor Donna Wheatley told ABC that the photographs made Robert look closer to the crocodile than he was, attributing that impression to the camera angle. She said she did not feel Irwin had put the child in danger. This is one witness’s impression; it does not provide a measured distance. (ABC News, 5 January 2004)

- Established in contemporaneous reporting: Irwin carried his infant son while feeding a crocodile inside the Australia Zoo enclosure, during an event billed as “Bob’s Croc Feeding Debut.”
- Established as the official response reported at the time: Queensland’s Families Department received complaints and sought unedited footage; the acting premier said Irwin would not face charges and that the department had been assured it would not happen again.
- Not independently resolved by these accounts: the exact distance between Robert and the crocodile, or whether the scene met an independent safety standard. Irwin’s account and Wheatley’s view explain how they perceived the moment, but neither supplies a technical measurement or independent safety determination.
A later CNN transcript of a 25 November 2004 Larry King Live interview revisited the controversy. CNN labels it a rush transcript that may not be final; it is an interview transcript, not the original video of the zoo event.
