If your dog may have eaten Apoquel, contact your veterinarian, an emergency animal hospital, or an animal poison-control center promptly. Apoquel contains oclacitinib, a veterinary JAK inhibitor; overdose has been associated with effects ranging from vomiting and diarrhea to heart, kidney, liver, and neurologic problems. The reported cases do not predict what will happen to an individual dog, and there is no established safe-dose cutoff to use at home.
Which JAK inhibitor does the evidence cover?
The dog-specific overdose information here concerns oclacitinib, sold as Apoquel, particularly its flavored chewable formulation. It should not be treated as a description of every JAK inhibitor. The FDA describes Apoquel Chewable as a flavored medication, and its palatability can lead pets to consume large amounts (FDA consumer safety update; FDA-approved label).
The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center reported that earlier overdose cases involving tablet formulations typically involved mild gastrointestinal upset, while more severe signs were reported after the flavored chewable became available. The authors suggested that palatability may help explain larger ingestions; this difference in reported cases does not establish that every chewable exposure will be more serious (ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center report).
What signs have been reported after oclacitinib overdose?
In its intoxication case report, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center described effects involving multiple body systems. These were findings in reported cases, not a checklist of symptoms every dog will develop:

- Other: facial or periocular swelling.
Severe cases and death have been reported. The FDA warns that an Apoquel Chewable overdose can be life-threatening (FDA consumer safety update; ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center report).
What do reported overdose doses mean?
The ASPCA report records dose ranges associated with effects in reported dog and cat cases. They are not safe-dose limits, and they cannot tell an owner whether a particular ingestion will cause harm.

| Reported dose | Reported association | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 10–15 mg/kg | Gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, or central nervous system signs in dogs and cats | Case observations, not a threshold for safety or a prediction for an individual animal. |
| 12–38 mg/kg | Acute kidney injury in dogs and cats | Case observations; the range overlaps with the other reported range and is not a reason to wait before seeking advice. |
These figures come from a poison-center clinical report, not a controlled study establishing dose-specific outcomes. Do not use them to decide that an amount is harmless or to delay contacting a professional (ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center report).
What should you do if your dog ate Apoquel?
- Call promptly. Contact your veterinarian, an emergency animal hospital, or an animal poison-control center. The FDA describes overdose as potentially life-threatening, and clinically meaningful cases may need proactive monitoring and treatment.
- Keep the package with you. Share the product and formulation, and the estimated number of tablets or chews missing if known.
- Give the key details. Tell the professional your dog’s weight and the approximate time of ingestion, along with any signs you have observed.
- Follow professional instructions. Do not attempt to induce vomiting or give activated charcoal or another treatment unless the veterinarian or poison-control professional directs you to do so.
The ASPCA report urges proactive monitoring and treatment when an overdose has meaningful clinical signs, as well as poison-center consultation. It also recommends reporting adverse events to the manufacturer and FDA (ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center report).

How often have overdoses been reported?
The FDA reported receiving 259 overdose reports involving dogs and 64 involving cats since Apoquel Chewable’s approval in June 2023, with counts current through April 2, 2026. These are reports received by the FDA, not incidence rates or a count of every exposure (FDA consumer safety update).
A 2025 retrospective study by Pet Poison Helpline authors reported a 299% increase in calls in the year after chewable oclacitinib entered the market, using data from January 2022 through November 2024. The study reviewed 417 symptomatic cases: 354 dogs and 63 cats. Calls and this selected group of symptomatic cases do not establish how often all exposed animals become ill (Pet Poison Helpline study).

- Ask your veterinarian whether an unflavored, non-chewable Apoquel tablet is suitable for your dog.
- After giving medication, put the package away rather than leaving chews accessible.
These storage and formulation suggestions follow FDA consumer guidance; changing a dog’s medication or formulation should be discussed with its veterinarian (FDA consumer safety update).
