If your dog may have swallowed a medication, call a veterinarian, emergency veterinary hospital, or animal poison-control service immediately. While making that call, give the drug’s exact name, strength and formulation; your best estimate of how much is missing and when access occurred; your dog’s weight, age, health history and current medications; the signs you see; and anything you have already given. Bring the container, remaining pills and label or a clear photograph.
Do not wait for symptoms to appear, and do not delay urgent care while trying to calculate a perfect pill count. If your dog is having a seizure, struggling to breathe, unconscious or not responding, leave for an emergency veterinary hospital at once and take the medication packaging with you.

Start the call before you finish gathering details
Suspected drug ingestion is time-sensitive because some toxic effects can be delayed. A dog that appears normal still needs prompt professional advice. ASPCA advises contacting a veterinarian or its poison-control service immediately rather than waiting for signs to develop.
Recommended Free Tools
- Call now. Contact your regular veterinarian, a local emergency veterinary hospital or an animal poison-control service. Tell the person who answers that your dog may have ingested a drug.
- Move the medication out of reach. Keep your dog away from the container, loose pills and any spilled powder or liquid. Do not spend time cleaning up before making the call.
- Take the package with you if you must travel. Bring the bottle, blister pack, box, remaining tablets or capsules and any label photograph that is readily available.
- Give the facts you know and label uncertainty honestly. A range or time window is more useful than delaying while you try to reconstruct an exact number.
If serious signs are already present, information gathering happens on the way to emergency care or while someone else makes the call. Never postpone transport to count every tablet.

Identify the drug precisely
The product identity is the first part of an exposure history. Read the label aloud or send a clear photograph according to the professional’s instructions.
Name and source
- State the exact medication name, including the active ingredient if it is printed.
- Say whether it is a human medication or a veterinary medication.
- If the package contains more than one ingredient, report the complete product name rather than one ingredient you recognize.
Strength and formulation
- Give the strength in milligrams exactly as printed, such as the number followed by “mg.”
- Report formulation wording such as extended-release. Release characteristics can be important to the clinician’s assessment.
- Distinguish tablets, capsules, liquid, cream or another form when the label does so.
If the package is missing
Tell the professional that the container is unavailable. Report any imprint, code, color, shape or scoring on the tablet or capsule and describe its appearance. Do not identify a pill from memory as a certainty; say that it is your best description.
Estimate how much your dog could have taken
Professionals need the largest plausible exposure as well as your best estimate. State how many pills may be missing, how much liquid could be gone, or how much product was accessible. If you cannot know the exact amount, provide a range. Pet Poison Helpline specifically notes that a range of pills is acceptable when the count is uncertain.

Use a clear estimate
- Explain how many units were present before access, if you know, and how many remain.
- Give a minimum and maximum when appropriate: for example, “between two and five tablets may be missing.”
- Say whether pills could have been dropped, shared with another pet or lost before the incident.
- Do not subtract pills based on an assumption that your dog swallowed only one. Let the professional decide which possible dose matters.
An honest range helps the veterinarian or toxicologist plan safely. False precision can mislead the assessment, while waiting for an exact count wastes time.
Report when access occurred
Give the actual time of ingestion if witnessed. If nobody saw it happen, provide the earliest and latest times when your dog could have reached the medication. Include the time you first noticed a missing pill or unusual behavior.

Explain uncertainty
Use a window rather than guessing a single minute: “The bottle was on the counter at 8 a.m.; it was missing when I returned at noon.” Tell the professional whether the timing is based on direct observation, a household routine or a later discovery. Mention when any signs began and whether they changed during the interval.
Describe the dog, not just the product
The same exposure history is interpreted in the context of the individual animal. Have these details ready:

- Age
- Body weight
- Sex
- Known medical conditions
- Current prescription medicines
- Supplements or other products being given
If you do not know an exact weight, provide the most recent reliable weight and say when it was measured. Do not delay the call to obtain a new measurement.
Describe current signs and when they started
Report every unusual behavior or physical sign you have noticed, even if it seems minor or unrelated. State when it began, whether it is worsening and whether it comes and goes. A dog that is quiet, unsteady, vomiting, unusually excited or otherwise different from normal should be described in plain language rather than summarized as “not acting right.”
Emergency signs that change the plan
ASPCA identifies seizures, difficulty breathing, unconsciousness and unresponsiveness as reasons to go directly to a veterinary hospital. In those situations, tell the hospital you are coming, take the packaging and leave immediately. Do not stop to complete a detailed inventory.

If signs are mild or absent, still contact a veterinarian, emergency hospital or poison-control service promptly. An apparently normal dog is not proof that the exposure is harmless; some poison effects can be delayed.

Report any home treatment, medication, food, drink or other substance given after the suspected ingestion. Include anything that was attempted to make the dog vomit. This information affects the advice you receive and prevents the same substance from being given again.
The American Veterinary Medical Association states: “Do not try to induce vomiting or give any medication to your pet unless directed to do so by a veterinarian or poison control center.” Do not begin a home-treatment plan from a general internet suggestion. The appropriate response depends on the specific drug, amount, timing and the dog’s condition.
Choose the right professional route
These routes can work together. In severe cases, in-person emergency care takes priority over a remote consultation.
| Route | Use it when | Information to have ready | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular veterinarian | Your dog is stable and the practice can advise or arrange treatment promptly | Product identity, possible amount, timing, dog history, signs and any treatment attempted | Advice may include monitoring, an examination or referral to an emergency hospital |
| Emergency veterinary hospital | Your dog has a seizure, trouble breathing, is unconscious, unresponsive or is rapidly worsening | Medication packaging and the same exposure history, gathered without delaying departure | Immediate assessment and in-person care |
| Animal poison-control service | You need toxicology guidance on a suspected exposure or your veterinarian directs you to one | Exact product, strength and formulation; amount and timing; dog’s history; signs; prior treatment | Case-specific guidance; ASPCA states its service is available around the clock and notes that a consultation fee may apply |
Local availability, the need for an examination and any consultation fee vary. Ask the service you contact about its current arrangements while the case is being handled.

Use the package as evidence
Bring the original container whenever possible. The label can confirm the exact name, strength, formulation and ingredients. Keep remaining pills or capsules in the package rather than transferring them to another container. If the package cannot travel with you, take a clear photograph of every label panel and preserve any pill imprint information.
Do not throw away packaging after the call. A clinician may need to verify a detail, and a partially empty container can help establish the possible quantity.

Common communication mistakes and the safer alternative
Waiting because the dog looks normal
Safer alternative: call immediately. ASPCA warns that delayed effects are possible and says not to wait even when a pet is acting normally.
Guessing a single dose or time
Safer alternative: provide the widest honest range and explain how you estimated it. A range is specifically accepted by Pet Poison Helpline.
Leaving out the formulation
Safer alternative: read every line of the label, including extended-release wording and the milligram strength.
Describing only the medication
Safer alternative: include the dog’s weight, age, medical conditions, medicines, supplements and current signs. These details are part of the exposure assessment.
Trying a home remedy first
Safer alternative: tell the professional what has already been given and wait for direction. Do not induce vomiting or give medication unless a veterinarian or poison-control center instructs you to do so.
Leaving the package behind
Safer alternative: take the bottle, box, blister pack, remaining pills or clear label photographs to the hospital or have them available during the call.
What to do while waiting for instructions
- Keep your dog with you and prevent further access to medication.
- Keep the packaging and any remaining product ready for the clinician.
- Write down the time of the call, the person’s instructions and any change in signs so you can report it accurately.
- Follow the veterinarian’s or poison-control professional’s directions rather than adding an unapproved treatment.
If the dog develops a seizure, breathing difficulty, unconsciousness or unresponsiveness, treat that as an emergency requiring immediate hospital travel, even if an earlier conversation suggested observation.

- Breed, age, weight and sex
- Medical conditions, current medicines and supplements
- Signs, when they began and whether they are changing
- Any home treatment or medication already given
