California’s State Marine Fish is the garibaldi (Hypsypops rubicundus), designated by the state Legislature in 1995. California also recognizes a separate state freshwater fish: the golden trout.
How to recognize a garibaldi
Adult garibaldi are brilliant orange and can reach up to 14 inches long, according to the California State Capitol Museum. Juveniles have iridescent blue spots, which fade as the fish matures.

Where garibaldi live
The museum places the species’ range from Monterey Bay south to Baja California. Garibaldi inhabit rocky reefs, at depths of up to 100 feet, and are known around the southern Channel Islands. Visitors may spot them from glass-bottom boats or docks, although sightings are not guaranteed.

The Legislature named the garibaldi the State Marine Fish in 1995 through AB 77, Chapter 948. The designation was associated with protecting the fish from commercial collectors. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife reports that a prohibition on commercial take took effect on January 1, 1996, with the marine aquarium trade a principal historical target. That history does not, by itself, establish every current possession rule or exception; consult current California regulations for legal guidance.

Is the garibaldi California’s only state fish?
No. The garibaldi is the state’s marine fish, while the golden trout is California’s state freshwater fish. The designations cover different habitats, so the two names are not competing answers to the marine-fish question.
