Dogxim was a female canid identified as a hybrid of a domestic dog and a Pampas fox—not a red fox—in a peer-reviewed 2023 case study. Researchers based that identification on chromosome and DNA evidence. The case was reported as the first documented dog–Pampas fox hybrid, but it does not establish that such hybrids are common or that they have caused harm to wild populations.
What was Dogxim?
Dogxim was the name given to a female canid found in Vacaria, in southern Brazil. The name combines “dog” with “graxaim do campo,” a Portuguese name for the Pampas fox (Lycalopex gymnocercus). Researchers concluded that Dogxim had a domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris) parent and a Pampas fox parent. The peer-reviewed case study describing her appeared in Animals in 2023. National Geographic reported that Dogxim was found after being hit by a vehicle in 2021. Her caregivers first thought she was a dog, then noticed behavior they associated with a fox. Those observations helped prompt questions about her identity; they were not, on their own, proof of hybrid ancestry. National Geographic’s report recounts the discovery.
How did scientists identify a dog–Pampas fox hybrid?
Researchers combined chromosome analysis with DNA testing. Neither Dogxim’s appearance nor a single chromosome count would establish her ancestry by itself; the genetic findings supplied evidence from both maternal and broader ancestry.

Chromosome counts

Dogxim’s count fell between the two species’ reported counts, a clue consistent with hybrid ancestry. The count was part of the evidence, not a stand-alone test of parentage. The study reports the chromosome analysis.
DNA evidence
Mitochondrial DNA, which traces maternal lineage, indicated a Pampas fox maternal ancestor. Nuclear DNA showed a mix associated with domestic dog and Pampas fox ancestry. Taken together with the chromosome findings, those results supported the researchers’ identification of Dogxim as a hybrid. The study’s PubMed record summarizes its findings.

Why did the case concern conservation scientists?
The concern is about what hybridization could mean for wild populations, not evidence that Dogxim herself caused damage. The study authors warned that hybridization between species with different evolutionary trajectories can threaten wildlife conservation. They identified two possible pathways of concern:
- Genetic introgression: If hybrids reproduce and pass genes between populations, ancestry from domestic dogs could enter Pampas fox populations. The case study does not establish that Dogxim reproduced or that introgression occurred.
- Disease transmission: Domestic dogs could transmit diseases to wild Pampas foxes where the animals come into contact. The report identifies this as a potential risk, not an outbreak demonstrated in connection with Dogxim.
The authors called for further study of possible effects on genetics, ecology, and behavior in wild populations. A single case cannot show how frequent hybridization is, whether hybrids are fertile, or whether a population-level impact has occurred. The authors’ conservation discussion sets out those concerns and the need for more study.

National Geographic’s 2023 report discussed habitat conversion and abandoned dogs as possible context for encounters between wild Pampas foxes and domestic dogs, citing researchers it interviewed. Neither explanation was established as the cause of Dogxim’s parentage. The report describes those proposed possibilities.
Was Dogxim the world’s only dog–fox hybrid?
The case study presented Dogxim as the first documented hybrid between a domestic dog and a Pampas fox. “First documented” describes the scientific record; it does not prove that no similar animal existed before, or that Dogxim was the only possible hybrid. The study does not establish that these hybrids are common, fertile, or forming a population. The case study and its abstract provide the basis for that distinction.

What happened to Dogxim?
National Geographic reported that Dogxim died in March 2023 and that her cause of death was unknown at the time. The report said Rio Grande do Sul’s environmental authority had the death under investigation. That is what was reported in 2023; no cause should be inferred from the available account. National Geographic’s report gives those details.
