There is no single average size for a salmon. “Salmon” refers to several species, and adult fish range from small pink salmon to exceptionally large Chinook. As a practical North American comparison, many adult salmon are about 20–36 inches long and weigh roughly 4–30 pounds. That is a useful species-to-species range—not a formal average calculated across all salmon.

The exact size depends on the species, age, sex, population, time spent at sea, and whether the fish is wild, hatchery-raised, or landlocked. A salmon’s length should also be compared using the same measurement method as the source, such as fork length.

Which salmon is the smallest?
Pink salmon are generally the smallest North American Pacific salmon. Alaska Department of Fish and Game materials give an average size of about 20–25 inches and 3.5–5 pounds, while a USGS profile gives a broader average weight of 3–5 pounds. Pink salmon can grow larger than that, but a fish near the upper end of a published maximum is not representative of the species’ usual adult size.
Which salmon is the largest?
Chinook salmon, also called king salmon, are the largest Pacific salmon. A typical benchmark is approximately 36 inches and 30 pounds. Alaska Department of Fish and Game and USGS profiles report a documented maximum of about 58 inches and 126 pounds.
That record-size figure should not be mistaken for an average. A 100-pound-plus Chinook is an extreme outlier; most Chinook are much smaller than the largest documented fish.

How large is each salmon species?
Chinook salmon: about 36 inches and 30 pounds
Chinook are the largest of the Pacific salmon species found in North America. Many adult fish are around 3 feet long and weigh approximately 30 pounds, although size varies considerably among populations and individuals. The species can reach about 58 inches and 126 pounds, but those exceptional fish should not be used to describe the average Chinook.
Coho salmon: 24–30 inches and 8–12 pounds
Adult coho salmon, commonly called silver salmon, usually measure 24–30 inches and weigh 8–12 pounds. NOAA Fisheries and Alaska Department of Fish and Game give essentially the same typical range. Coho generally spend about a year and a half feeding in the ocean before returning to spawn, although local life histories differ.

Sockeye salmon: 18–31 inches and 4–15 pounds
Sockeye, or red salmon, are smaller than coho and Chinook on average. Broad adult estimates place them at about 1.5–2.5 feet long and 4–15 pounds. An Alaska benchmark is 24 inches and 6 pounds.
Do not automatically apply sea-run sockeye figures to kokanee. Kokanee are the landlocked form of sockeye and usually remain much smaller, rarely exceeding roughly 14–14.4 inches according to NOAA and Alaska references.

Pink salmon, also called humpback salmon, are the smallest North American Pacific salmon. Their typical adult size is about 20–25 inches and 3.5–5 pounds. USGS gives a broader possible size of up to about 30 inches and 12 pounds, illustrating the difference between an average or typical figure and a maximum or upper-end figure.
Chum salmon: 24–28 inches and about 10–13 pounds
Chum salmon, sometimes called dog salmon, are commonly listed at 24–28 inches and 10–13 pounds by Alaska Department of Fish and Game. NOAA gives a broader average weight of 8–15 pounds and reports that chum can reach about 3.6 feet and 45 pounds.
Regional data can produce a noticeably different “average.” For example, Alaska research from Southeast Alaska reported an approximately 8–9-pound average across 1969–2023 and highlighted year-to-year variation. A chum from one river system or fishing region may therefore differ substantially from a general reference-table estimate.

Atlantic salmon: 28–30 inches and 8–12 pounds after two years at sea
Atlantic salmon do not have one fixed adult size because their growth depends heavily on how long they remain in saltwater. NOAA Fisheries states that adults returning after two years at sea average about 28–30 inches and 8–12 pounds. Fish returning after only one year at sea are smaller, while older sea-age fish and repeat spawners can be larger.

Atlantic salmon can reach about 30 pounds, but that is well above the usual two-sea-year average.
Why salmon size varies so much
Species
The word salmon covers seven Pacific salmon species, including five that occur in North American waters, plus Atlantic salmon. Chinook are the largest North American salmon, while pink salmon are the smallest. Steelhead is sometimes included informally in discussions of Pacific salmon, but it differs biologically from the other Pacific salmon because it can survive and spawn repeatedly.
Age and time at sea
Salmon grow much faster in saltwater than in freshwater. This is especially important for Atlantic salmon: a fish that spends one year at sea will generally be smaller than one that spends two years there, and older fish may be larger still.
Population and region
Size varies among rivers, ocean regions, runs, and years. The same species can have different published averages depending on where and when researchers collected their measurements. Chum salmon provide a clear example: a broad general reference may give a 10–13-pound typical size, while a long-term regional dataset may average closer to 8–9 pounds.

Landlocked versus sea-going fish
Landlocked salmon forms do not necessarily reach the size of their sea-going relatives. Kokanee, the landlocked form of sockeye, are notably smaller than anadromous sockeye that migrate to the ocean.
Sex, life history, and spawning
Size distributions can also differ between males and females and among different life histories. Most Pacific salmon, including coho, generally die after spawning. Atlantic salmon can survive to spawn again, and repeat-spawning fish may be larger than first-time spawners.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare a caught salmon with published averages
- Identify the species first. A 10-pound pink salmon, sockeye, coho, chum, Atlantic salmon, or Chinook does not represent the same position within its species’ size range.
- Record location and date. Population, run, year, and region can all affect the appropriate comparison.
- Measure length consistently. Salmon research commonly records fork length—the distance from the snout to the fork in the tail. Alaska materials also describe a mid-eye-to-tail-fork measurement. Use the same convention as the reference you are comparing against.
- Record weight separately. Length and weight are related but not interchangeable. A long, lean fish and a shorter, heavier fish may have very different weights.
- Note whether the fish is wild, hatchery-raised, or landlocked. Those categories can have different growth patterns and size expectations.
If you regularly compare catches, a digital fish scale can make weight records more consistent. It is a practical consumer tool, not a guarantee of research-grade accuracy, so treat the result as an estimate and record the scale’s units and conditions.
Measuring a salmon during catch and release
For a released fish, measuring length is generally preferable to repeatedly lifting the fish to obtain a weight. A fish measuring board provides a consistent surface and makes it easier to record fork length quickly. A flexible measuring tape can be a compact alternative, but it may be less consistent than a rigid board if the fish or tape moves.

NOAA recommends minimizing handling and air exposure, supporting the fish’s weight along the length of its body, and never suspending it by the lip or mouth. Keep the fish in the water as much as possible, measure efficiently, and follow local regulations for handling and release.

Common mistakes when discussing salmon size
- “The average salmon weighs 10 pounds.” That may be a reasonable rough figure for some Atlantic, coho, or chum comparisons, but it is too high for many pink salmon and too low for many Chinook.
- “Salmon are about 3 feet long.” Some species cluster near that length, but pink salmon are commonly shorter and Chinook can be substantially larger.
- “The record is the normal size.” A documented 126-pound Chinook is an outlier, not a typical adult salmon.
- “Sockeye and kokanee are the same size.” They are forms of the same species, but landlocked kokanee usually remain much smaller than sea-going sockeye.
- “Every salmon dies after spawning.” That is broadly true of Pacific salmon such as coho, but Atlantic salmon can survive and spawn again.
So, what is the average size of a salmon?
For a quick general estimate, say that an adult salmon is often 20–36 inches long and weighs about 4–30 pounds, depending on species. Pink salmon usually occupy the small end of that range, sockeye and coho fall in the middle, Atlantic and chum vary with life history and region, and Chinook occupy the large end. If accuracy matters, identify the species and use its specific length and weight range rather than relying on one “average salmon” number.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the average size of an adult salmon?
A practical cross-species estimate is about 20–36 inches long and 4–30 pounds for many adult salmon. This is not a formal average because salmon species differ widely.
Which salmon species gets the biggest?
Chinook, or king salmon, are the largest Pacific salmon. A typical benchmark is about 36 inches and 30 pounds, although exceptional fish can be much larger.
Which salmon species is the smallest?
Pink salmon are generally the smallest North American Pacific salmon, averaging about 20–25 inches and 3.5–5 pounds.
Are kokanee the same size as sockeye salmon?
Kokanee are the landlocked form of sockeye salmon and usually remain much smaller than sea-going sockeye, rarely exceeding roughly 14–14.4 inches.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: There is no single average salmon size. A useful broad estimate for many adult salmon is 20–36 inches and 4–30 pounds, but species-specific figures are more meaningful: pink salmon are often about 3.5–5 pounds, while a typical Chinook is around 36 inches and 30 pounds. Atlantic salmon size also depends strongly on years spent at sea, and landlocked kokanee are much smaller than sea-going sockeye.
