What is Ferreiraella populi?
Ferreiraella populi is a chiton, a marine mollusk whose shell consists of eight overlapping valves. The 2026 paper formally describes it alongside two other new chiton species. Its type locality is a sunken-wood fall in the Izu-Ogasawara region off Japan, on the abyssal plain, at 5,506 meters. The often-repeated 18,000-foot depth is a rounded conversion of that measurement.

The species description reports that the type specimens reach approximately 25 millimeters in length. Researchers recorded 18–20 gills on each side. These figures describe the specimens examined, not a known average size or range for the entire species.
What does “iron-plated tongue” mean?
Chitons feed using a radula, a ribbon-like structure bearing rows of teeth. In F. populi, the holotype’s radula measures 6.1 millimeters and has 53 rows of fully mineralized teeth. The paper describes flattened, three-pointed cusps on the major lateral teeth and a comb-like major uncinus.

That anatomy explains the vivid headline, but the formal description does not establish that the structure is a literal iron plate. It also does not, by itself, demonstrate a particular scraping behavior, the exact composition of the mineralized teeth, or a survival advantage. What is known about its life on sunken wood?
The paper reports F. populi from a woodfall and describes the species as endemic to sunken wood. This places it in a deep-sea habitat where wood has reached the seafloor. The reported habitat does not establish exactly what the chiton eats, how it moves or feeds there, or how its population is distributed.

Why is it named populi?
The species epithet populi means “of the people.” It came from a public naming competition: the name was suggested 11 times among more than 8,000 contributions. The journal article describes F. populi together with two other new chitons and the competition; its scope is also summarized in the PubMed record.
