Researchers distinguished it from northern pudus using genetic variation and physical traits—not appearance alone—and reinstated the genus Pudella for the two northern species.
What is Pudella carlae?
Pudella carlae is a dwarf deer in the pudu group and is reported as endemic to Peru. Its known range is associated with dry valleys around the Huancabamba Depression in the central Andes. The typical northern form occurs north of the depression and extends into Ecuador and Colombia; the southern Peruvian form is the one named P. carlae. Interesting Engineering’s April 2, 2024 report describes the animal as weighing about 7–9 kilograms (15.4–19.8 pounds). It also gives a general pudu height of under 43 centimeters (17 inches) at the shoulder; that height is for pudus generally, not a separately stated measurement for P. carlae.
The report describes P. carlae as rich reddish brown to orange-red, with paler ears and body fur. Color can help describe an animal, but it was not the sole basis for recognizing a new species.
How did researchers distinguish it from northern pudus?
The researchers assessed genetic variation alongside qualitative and quantitative morphological traits. Their comparisons included DNA differences and measurements such as skull length from museum specimens. Taken together, those lines of evidence supported treating the southern Peruvian population as a distinct species rather than simply a southern-looking population of the northern form.

Field observations helped prompt the comparison: study author Guillermo D’Elia was quoted as saying the animals looked different from others in the north. But the taxonomic case rests on the broader genetic and morphological analysis, not that observation by itself.
Why does the name Pudella matter?
The work also revises the classification of the northern pudus. According to the study abstract reproduced in the report, the Southern Pudu—the type species of the genus Pudu—is not the closest evolutionary relative of the two northern pudu species. The authors therefore revalidated Pudella for those northern species. In other words, this finding concerns both the recognition of P. carlae and how its relatives are grouped.

The reproduced abstract places the work in the context of the Neotropical deer tribe Odocoileini, which it says contains 18 recognized living species in seven genera. Those counts are figures reported by the abstract as summarized in the 2024 article, rather than an independently verified current census.
What does “first in over 60 years” mean?
The study abstract describes P. carlae as the first living cervid species described in the 21st century and the first from the New World in more than 60 years. That is a specific claim about describing a living deer species from the Americas; it does not mean no deer classification changes or taxonomic discoveries occurred during that period.

How did this Peruvian deer evolve?
Its precise evolutionary history is unresolved. One possibility is that a population became isolated as the Huancabamba Depression formed; another is that deer colonized the area later and adapted there. D’Elia, quoted in the report via New Scientist, said researchers did not yet know which explanation was right. Neither scenario should be treated as an established finding.

The accessible account does not provide a formal conservation category, population estimate, population trend, or specific habitat threat for P. carlae. Its range association with dry valleys is useful context, but it is not enough to conclude that the species is endangered—or secure. The report says a better understanding of the genus may help research on ecology and conservation, but it does not establish a particular conservation outcome.
