Zoology is the branch of biology that studies animals—their structure, function, development, behavior, classification, evolution, and relationships with their environments. Zoologists may study cells or individual animals, particular animal groups, populations, or ecosystems, using methods suited to each question.
It is a broad field, not one narrow specialty. Its applications can include research, conservation, environmental management, education, and other work, while actual duties depend on a person’s specialization and employer.
What do zoologists study?
Zoologists use biological evidence to investigate questions such as how animals are built and function, how they grow and behave, how species are related, and how animals interact with one another and their environments. The field spans several scales, from cells and individual organisms to populations and ecosystems.
Some zoologists focus on a particular animal group; others focus on questions such as physiology, behavior, ecology, genetics, or evolution. These areas overlap, and the examples below are not an exhaustive or rigid classification.

Which animals are included in zoology?
Zoology focuses on animals across the animal kingdom, including vertebrates and invertebrates. Vertebrates include fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Invertebrates include groups such as insects and other animals without backbones.
Examples of group-focused specialties include:
- Ornithology: birds
- Entomology: insects
- Herpetology: reptiles and amphibians
- Mammalogy: mammals
- Ichthyology: fish
Other zoologists focus on parasites and their relationships with hosts, or on broader questions involving behavior, physiology, ecology, genetics, evolution, or systematics.
The major branches and questions of zoology
Zoology’s specialties are different ways of studying animals, and they often overlap.
Anatomy and physiology
Anatomy examines animal structures, while physiology studies how those structures and other body systems function. These areas can be studied at different scales and may contribute to research on animal health, biology, or adaptation.

Behavior
Animal behavior research investigates what animals do and how behavior relates to factors such as their biology and surroundings. Observations need careful interpretation; seeing an animal behave in a certain way does not by itself establish why it did so.
Ecology
Ecology examines relationships between organisms and their environments. Zoologists may investigate animal interactions, populations, habitats, or the effects of environmental conditions. Ecology and zoology overlap, but ecology is not limited to animals.
Classification and evolution
Classification organizes animals into groups, while systematics and evolutionary research investigate their diversity and relationships. Zoologists may use biological evidence to examine how species are related and how animal traits have changed over time.
Genetics and development
Genetics concerns inheritance and variation; developmental biology studies how an animal changes as it develops. These subjects can intersect with questions about animal diversity, biology, and evolution.

How do zoologists study animals?
There is no single zoology method. Depending on the research question, zoologists may observe animals in natural environments or captivity, conduct experiments in a laboratory or field setting, collect specimens or other biological data, study movement or reproduction, and monitor populations. Some use geographic information systems (GIS) or modeling software.
Not every zoologist works outdoors or handles animals. Some study cells, tissues, or other biological data; others work with populations, habitats, collections, or policy. Researchers may also communicate findings through technical writing to researchers, policymakers, or the public.
How is zoology different from related fields?
| Field | Main focus | How it relates to zoology |
|---|---|---|
| Zoology | Animal biology, which can include particular animal groups, organisms, and broader biological questions | Focuses on animals across multiple scales and specialties |
| Ecology | Relationships between organisms and their environments | Overlaps with zoology when researchers study animals in relation to their environments |
| Wildlife biology | Often wild populations or ecosystems | Overlaps with zoology and ecological approaches; typical job distinctions are not rigid |
| Veterinary medicine | Clinical animal health | Distinct from zoology as a scientific field; zoological knowledge does not replace veterinary care |
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics describes zoologists as often studying particular types of animals and wildlife biologists as often focusing on ecosystems or particular populations. These are typical distinctions, not fixed boundaries; job titles and duties vary. Zoology also differs from veterinary medicine, which centers on clinical animal health.
What can you do with a zoology degree?
Study routes vary. University programs may begin with core biological sciences and develop a focus such as ecology, evolution, animal behavior, aquatic biology, or cellular and developmental biology. Programs may include laboratory or fieldwork and research skills.
Possible work areas include research, species monitoring, conservation, environmental management, museums and collections, education, and related technical positions. A zoology or related degree is one route into the field. Some roles, particularly research positions, may call for postgraduate qualifications or relevant experience. Requirements vary by country, specialization, employer, and role; no single qualification threshold applies to every job.
An introductory zoology textbook can be a useful optional study aid for readers seeking a structured introduction. It is not a required resource for every learner.

Zoology can help readers understand animals as living organisms with distinct biology and behavior. It provides background for thinking about how animals function and relate to their environments, including companion animals.
However, studying zoology does not qualify someone to diagnose or treat an individual pet. If an animal may be ill or injured, consult a veterinarian for clinical advice.
