The answer changes across the Saranac area: different fish are specifically listed for the Saranac Lakes Chain, Middle Saranac Lake and Lake Flower, so a regional list should not be treated as applying to every lake.
Fish listed for Upper Saranac Lake and nearby ponds
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) lists these fish for Upper Saranac Lake: black bass, northern pike, panfish, lake trout and landlocked salmon. Its listing for nearby Fish Creek, Square and Rollins ponds names black bass, northern pike and panfish. NYSDEC’s Fish Creek Pond fishing information uses broad categories such as “black bass” and “pan fish”; it does not provide a more detailed species inventory for those categories.
How the list differs across the Saranac area
“Saranac Lake” may refer to a particular lake, connected waters or the wider area around the village. NYSDEC lists the waters separately, and the named fish vary by location.
| Waterbody or area | Fish specifically listed by NYSDEC |
|---|---|
| Upper Saranac Lake | Black bass, northern pike, panfish, lake trout and landlocked salmon. Source |
| Fish Creek, Square and Rollins ponds | Black bass, northern pike and panfish. Source |
| Saranac Lakes Chain | Smallmouth bass and northern pike are named among NYSDEC’s top fishing waters. Source |
| Middle Saranac Lake | Largemouth bass is specifically named. Source |
| Lake Flower | Northern pike is specifically named. Source |
| Lower Saranac Lake | NYSDEC describes it as a particularly popular fishery, but its overview does not give a complete species inventory. Source |
NYSDEC’s overview of Saranac Lakes Wild Forest describes a wider mix of fishing opportunities: remote brook trout ponds, lakes with lake trout and landlocked Atlantic salmon, bass waters and trout streams. That regional description does not establish that each of those fish occurs in every lake.

Check the rules for the exact water and date
Fishing regulations depend on the waterbody and can change. For example, the NYSDEC Region 5 rules checked on October 4, 2026 list Upper Saranac Lake’s lake-trout season as April 1 through October 15, with a 23-inch minimum length and a daily limit of three. Ice fishing is permitted there with a maximum of three lines. Confirm the current rules for the specific water and date you plan to fish in NYSDEC Region 5 Special Fishing Regulations.
Baitfish rules are also water-specific. NYSDEC warns that baitfish are prohibited in many Saranac Lakes Wild Forest waters and directs anglers to check the rules for their chosen water; do not assume one rule applies throughout the region. See NYSDEC’s Saranac Lakes Wild Forest overview and its baitfish regulations.

Why fish introductions matter
Brook trout need particular care: NYSDEC says introduced, competitive non-native fish can contribute to their decline. Its brook trout guide reports that 3% of waters in the Saranac Lakes Wild Forest region that once held brook trout still do; the source page does not state a publication year, so this is not a current census. NYSDEC also states, “Introducing any fish into waters they did not come from is illegal.” Read its Guide to Brook Trout Fishing in Adirondack Ponds before visiting sensitive waters.
