Fish recorded in Sproat Lake
The British Columbia Ministry’s lake-specific inventory names these fish. It is a planning-document record, not a recent comprehensive census, so it does not establish how common each species is today.
- Cutthroat trout: Listed for the lake; a provincial landscape-unit report also says Sproat Lake is frequently stocked with cutthroat.
- Rainbow trout: Listed in the lake inventory.
- Dolly Varden: Listed in the lake inventory.
- Steelhead: Listed separately from rainbow trout in the local fishery records. Steelhead are the migratory, sea-going form of rainbow trout.
- Coho salmon: Listed in the lake inventory and in the broader watershed report.
- Sockeye salmon: Listed in the lake inventory. Sproat is also documented as a sockeye nursery lake.
- Kokanee: Listed in the lake inventory. Kokanee are the landlocked form of sockeye, unlike migratory sockeye.
- Prickly sculpin and threespine stickleback: Small fish included in the inventory, rather than the main sport-fishing targets.
- Common carp: The provincial plan documented a lake population during the decade or more before the plan was prepared. That older record does not establish carp numbers or current status.
Are salmon found in Sproat Lake?
Yes: the lake-specific inventory includes sockeye and coho, and it also lists kokanee, the landlocked form of sockeye. Sproat Lake has a documented nursery role for sockeye associated with the Barkley Sound fishery. That role does not mean sockeye are necessarily an ordinary recreational catch in the lake.
Chinook require a geographic qualification. A provincial landscape-unit report includes them in a combined list for Sproat Lake and associated fish-bearing streams; the lake-specific inventory does not list them. The broader record is not proof of Chinook residency in the lake itself. The provincial plan also records Atlantic salmon stocking in the early 1920s, which is historical evidence of introduction—not evidence that Atlantic salmon currently live there.

What the sockeye records do—and do not—tell you
Fisheries and Oceans Canada describes Sproat, Great Central and Henderson lakes as nursery lakes supporting a mixed-stock sockeye fishery in Barkley Sound. Its 2016 report summarizes ecological studies and management work based on 2008–2013 activity; it is not a current population count.
The Vancouver Island Large Lakes Plan, published in 2016 by the British Columbia Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, reports historical Sproat sockeye escapement of 250,000 in 1983 and an average of approximately 163,000 during the 1990s. These are past escapement figures, not estimates of the present population.

Fishing rules and where to check them
In the 2025–2027 Region 1 freshwater synopsis, Sproat Lake rules include catch-and-release for cutthroat trout, release of wild rainbow trout over 50 cm, and use of a single barbless hook. Regulations can change, so check the current Region 1 freshwater fishing synopsis and any in-season updates before fishing.
BC Parks confirms that freshwater fishing is available at the lake and says anglers must follow provincial and federal regulations and closures. Anglers in British Columbia also need an appropriate licence. See the Sproat Lake Park information for park guidance.

How to interpret the species list
- The lake-specific inventory and a watershed report do not describe exactly the same geography; the latter also covers connected fish-bearing streams.
- A species appearing on a planning-document list confirms a record in that document, not current abundance, a recent census, or a guarantee of what an angler will catch.
- The available sources do not establish a current abundance ranking or a comprehensive present-day stocking schedule.
