Thoroughbreds are athletic because generations of breeding have selected them for racing performance—but no single body shape, gene, or pedigree guarantees a champion. A horse’s results reflect inherited traits, individual health and soundness, and the context in which it races.
What is a Thoroughbred?
The Thoroughbred is a horse breed developed for racing. Breeders have selected horses for racing performance for more than 400 years, but that history has not produced a simple formula for speed or success. A 2022 review of Thoroughbred genetics explains that genetic variation remains important and that different combinations of factors can contribute to performance. Bailey, Petersen and Kalbfleisch’s review in Annual Review of Animal Biosciences notes that myostatin variants are strongly associated with best racing distance; associations involving other genomic regions tend to be weak to modest.

That makes it more accurate to think of athleticism as a combination of inherited potential and the horse’s physical condition, training, and racing circumstances—not a trait that can be read from one feature.

Racing asks a horse to perform at speed under demanding conditions. Athletic assessment therefore involves more than appearance. The Jockey Club’s 2021 conference report describes equine biomechanics as spanning physical functions from organ function to stride balance at racing speeds. That broad view helps explain why judging athletic ability from a photograph or a single measurement is limited.

Veterinarian Will Farmer, equine medical director at Churchill Downs Inc., described the horse’s prey-animal background as part of its athletic story: “It goes back to the roots: They are an animal of prey,” he said, adding, “That’s how they got away from being eaten.” The explanation, reported by the Associated Press in 2025, is an interpretation rather than a complete account of equine physiology.
Does a certain body shape predict racing success?
Conformation—the horse’s physical structure—can be useful to observe, but it is not a reliable shortcut to predicting a winner. A study of 3,916 Thoroughbred yearlings sold at public auction from 1993 to 1999 found that turned-out feet were the most frequently recorded conformational defect among the UK horses studied, affecting 30% of that group. Overall, links between the assessed conformation traits and racing performance were weak and were largely explained by sire.

The study’s assessments were qualitative and made by one veterinary observer. Its defect rate describes that historical cohort, not every present-day Thoroughbred population. The findings support caution about treating a particular conformation feature as proof that a horse will—or will not—excel. Love et al.’s study is indexed by PubMed.

Race time, earnings, and handicapping can all provide evidence about performance, but none is a perfect measure when horses compete at different ages, distances, and track types. Ratings also depend on context, including the quality of opposition and the achievement being assessed.

A 2023 analysis examined international ratings for 6,216 horses rated 115 or above, using International Federation of Horseracing Authorities data from 2004 through 2022. The researchers found significant associations between ratings and age, sex, sire, race distance, country of foaling, and country of training. These are population-level influences; they do not explain an individual horse’s ability on their own. Sobotková et al.’s analysis appears in Archives Animal Breeding.

- Distance: A horse’s record over one race distance does not automatically predict performance over another.
- Age and sex: Both were associated with ratings in the international study.
- Pedigree: Sire was associated with ratings, but pedigree is not a guarantee of an individual result.
- Place and conditions: Country of foaling and training were associated with ratings; surface and track conditions also matter when comparing race performances.
- Competition: Ratings reflect performance in context, including the quality of opposition.
Comparisons are most meaningful when they specify the population and period involved rather than treating every time, earnings total, or rating as directly interchangeable.
What should you look for in a horse’s athletic profile?
A well-rounded view combines observed soundness and health with performance evidence and the circumstances behind it. Conformation can be part of the picture, but it should not stand in for evaluation of the whole horse. Nor should a single genetic marker or pedigree label be taken as a prediction of championship potential.
