Northern water snakes (Nerodia sipedon) mainly eat fish and amphibians, particularly frogs and tadpoles. They live beside water and in other wet habitats, including ponds, lakes, wetlands, ditches, marshes, and slow-moving rivers and streams. They bask on branches, logs, rocks, docks, piers, and similar structures, then shelter under nearby cover. Their native distribution is concentrated in eastern North America, although established introduced populations have been recorded in Roseville, California.
What northern water snakes eat
Fish and amphibians make up the central categories in state and conservation-agency descriptions of the northern water snake’s diet. The exact menu changes with the prey available at a particular pond, stream, wetland, or marsh, so a list of documented prey should not be treated as a universal menu for every snake.

Fish are a major prey category
Documented fish prey include brook trout, sunfish, smallmouth bass, minnows, bullhead catfish, and hogsuckers. These examples come from the National Wildlife Federation’s species summary and show that northern water snakes can consume several kinds of fish rather than relying on one preferred species.

Reported amphibian prey include cricket frogs, toads, leopard frogs, bullfrog tadpoles, and spring peepers. Minnesota’s Department of Natural Resources also lists frogs and notes that the snakes may eat turtles and other small animals found in their habitat. North Carolina’s wildlife profile summarizes the diet more broadly as fish and amphibians.

They may eat dead fish
Minnesota’s profile notes that northern water snakes may consume dead fish. That observation is useful when interpreting a snake found near a shoreline or fish remains: feeding does not necessarily require the snake to have caught live prey immediately beforehand.
Historical percentages need careful labeling
A 2005 U.S. Forest Service reference reproduces older New England studies rather than presenting a modern, range-wide estimate. One set of figures, attributed to Uhler and colleagues (1939), reported 61% fish, 21% frogs and toads, and 12% salamanders among recorded food items. The same reference separately relayed an estimate from Raney and Roecker (1947) that fish made up more than 95% of the diet.
Those numbers should be read as historical, regional findings with different study sources, not as a single current percentage that applies across the species’ entire distribution. They also describe the samples and methods used by those studies; they do not establish what every northern water snake eats today.

Why their diet is tied to water
Northern water snakes are closely associated with aquatic environments because the prey named in wildlife profiles are commonly found in or around those environments. California’s Department of Fish and Wildlife describes the species as living in “freshwater habitats such as ditches, ponds, lakes, wetlands, and slow-moving streams and rivers.” That sentence captures the basic habitat relationship, but the species also uses the land immediately around the water.

Still and slow-moving water
The National Wildlife Federation describes a preference for still or slow-moving water, including ponds, seasonal pools, and lakes. California’s profile adds slow-moving streams and rivers, as well as ditches and wetlands. These descriptions point to quiet or gently flowing water rather than a requirement for one specific kind of water body.
Basking structures
Individuals commonly bask on overhanging branches, logs, rocks, docks, piers, and other natural or human-made structures near or over shallow water. A snake on a branch or dock is therefore using a normal part of its habitat, not necessarily moving away from the wetland.
Cover beside the shore
When not basking, northern water snakes may hide under logs, flat rocks, boards, or other cover near shore. Shoreline debris and vegetation can provide places to shelter close to the water where prey is available. Removing every piece of cover from a bank can eliminate part of the habitat the species uses.
Short overland movements
California’s wildlife profile reports that the snakes may travel overland but remain close to freshwater habitat. A sighting away from the immediate edge of a pond or stream therefore does not automatically mean the animal belongs to a different species or has abandoned its normal habitat.

Where northern water snakes live locally
At the local scale, look for a combination of water, shoreline cover, and places to bask. Suitable settings include:
- Ponds and lakes, including seasonal pools
- Wetlands, marshes, and drainage ditches
- Slow-moving rivers and streams
- Shorelines with logs, flat rocks, boards, branches, docks, or piers
These categories describe habitat types, not a promise that every pond or river reach is occupied. A 2018 U.S. Geological Survey map is a deductive habitat model based on remotely sensed data within the species’ range. It can indicate where conditions may be suitable, but it is not a direct census confirming a snake at every mapped location.
Do they live in ponds or rivers?
They can live near both. Ponds and lakes provide still water, while slow-moving rivers and streams also fit the documented habitat profile. Ditches, wetlands, and seasonal pools broaden the range of places that may support them. The common feature is suitable aquatic or semi-aquatic habitat with nearby basking and hiding sites, not a single water-body shape.

Are they limited to freshwater?
Freshwater habitats are the standard description, but “freshwater only” is too absolute for every region. North Carolina’s Wildlife Resources Commission reports northern water snakes from salt marshes on the Outer Banks as well as from the state’s Coastal Plain, Piedmont, and mountains. That regional record shows why a habitat summary should include local exceptions instead of treating one statewide description as universal.

The native geographic range
The species’ native range covers much of the eastern half of the United States, especially the Northeast and Midwest. A more detailed California Department of Fish and Wildlife summary places the native distribution from Mississippi and Alabama through the Carolinas to Maine, and west and north through Kansas and Nebraska to the Great Lakes.
| Geographic question | Supported description |
|---|---|
| Broad native region | Eastern half of the United States, with strong representation in the Northeast and Midwest |
| Southern and eastern extent in the detailed state summary | Mississippi and Alabama through the Carolinas to Maine |
| Western and northern extent in that summary | Kansas and Nebraska to the Great Lakes |
| Natural western limit | The species does not naturally occur west of the Rocky Mountains |
“Where they live” therefore has two meanings. The range describes the broad region where the species is native; habitat describes the particular ponds, wetlands, streams, marshes, and shorelines an individual uses inside that region.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.California records are introduced populations
California is west of the species’ natural range. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife documents established, reproducing populations in Roseville beginning in 2007 and a second Roseville location discovered in 2014. These are introduced occurrences, not evidence that northern water snakes naturally expanded across the Rocky Mountains.

How to interpret a sighting
A snake on a dock or branch
Basking on a dock, pier, branch, log, or rock near water is consistent with the documented behavior. The structure may be natural or human-made; its position near the water matters more than whether it was built by people.
A snake under shoreline debris
Logs, boards, flat rocks, and similar cover are reported hiding places. Seeing a snake disappear beneath one of these objects is therefore compatible with normal sheltering behavior.
A snake on land
Short overland travel occurs, but the species generally remains close to freshwater habitat. Location alone is not enough to identify a snake, particularly where several water-associated species overlap.
A snake mistaken for a cottonmouth
The National Wildlife Federation identifies northern water snakes as nonvenomous and notes that they are sometimes mistaken for cottonmouths. Do not rely on a quick photograph, a single color pattern, or the fact that the snake was near water to make a definitive identification. Keep your distance and consult local wildlife authorities when a reliable identification matters.
What the diet and habitat together tell you
A northern water snake found beside a pond, wetland, ditch, marsh, or slow stream is in a setting that can supply both its main prey and its shelter. Fish and amphibians explain the close association with water; basking structures and shoreline cover explain why the snake may be visible on a log one moment and hidden under a board the next.
The pattern is flexible rather than uniform. One location may offer minnows and frogs, another may provide tadpoles or seasonal-pool amphibians, and a marsh may differ from a lake shoreline. Wildlife summaries document the range of prey and habitats, but they do not establish one fixed diet for every individual or one occupancy guarantee for every apparently suitable site.
Practical guidance around homes and recreation areas
- Observe from a distance, especially when a snake is basking or has moved beneath cover.
- Do not handle a snake to test whether it is a northern water snake or a cottonmouth.
- Keep children and pets away until the animal has moved on.
- Do not feed a wild snake or leave fish remains to attract it.
- For California sightings, use current California Department of Fish and Wildlife reporting and handling guidance rather than attempting capture or relocation.
Northern water snakes are wild animals whose habitat use can bring them close to docks, yards, trails, and drainage features. Their presence near water is compatible with normal feeding, basking, and sheltering behavior; it is not, by itself, evidence that the animal is being kept as a pet or that it has been moved from elsewhere.
